Objectives: As a sequel to the former analysis of the quality of life (QoL) among young-old and old-old in Korea, this research was aimed to identify factors related to the quality of life and the gender difference after controlling for the related factors among Korean elderly. Methods: Selected elderly data of 1,339 subjects from the 5th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted in 2010 was analyzed. In this survey, QoL was measured using Euro Quality of Life (EQ-5D) instrument. Data were analyzed using complex survey data analysis on IBM-SPSS 20.0. The related factors were identified using general linear models with backward elimination. The gender difference was tested also using general linear models. Results: The distributions of educational level, family income level, and presence of cohabitant were different between male and female elderly in both young-old and old-old age group. So were the health behaviors and perceived health, and experience of stress, depression, and suicidal thoughts. QoL and its subscales- mobility, self care, daily living, pain and discomfort, and anxiety and depression- were consistently better among male elderly regardless of age group. Among the variables considered, education, family income level, presence of cohabitant, perceived health, age group and BMI were found to be related to the QoL at p=.05, and presence of chronic diseases at p=.10. The difference in QoL between male and female elderly after controlling for the variables was statistically significant. Conclusion: Improving QoL is particularly important for the elderly. In order to improve QoL of the elderly, age- and gender- differences need to be considered when developing services and programs for the elderly.
Purpose: There have been several comparative studies that have focused on elderly groups of patients with gastric cancer. However, new criteria are needed for this elderly group because of the longer life span of Korean people. The diagnosis of gastric cancer has sometimes been missed in the young age group. The perioperative risk is high in the elderly age group because of their combined diseases. This study was designed to determine the differences of the clinicopathologic features and the prognosis between young and elderly patients with gastric cancer. Materials and Methods: Eighty patients were divided in two groups and these patients were selected for making comparison between young and elderly groups of patients with gastric cancer. The young age group consisted of 31 patients who were aged 35 years old or less. The elderly age group was made up of 49 patients who were aged 75 years old or above. Results: For the clinicopathologic features, the young age group was characterized by a high incidence of the poorly differentiated type of adenocarcinoma and the diffuse type too, according to the Lauren classification. On the other hand, the elderly group was characterized by a high incidence of poorly to moderate differentiated adenocarcinoma and also the intestinal type according to the Lauren classification. The other clinical differences were unremarkable. Additionally, there was no survival advantage in the young age group compared to the elderly group. Conclusion: There were no clinicopathologic and prognostic differences between both extreme age groups. So, active surgical treatment is recommended even for the elderly patients group.
The purpose of this study is to analyze leisure satisfaction and leisure performance according to whether elderly people are performing their preferred leisure activities. For the analysis, we used sample from the 6th (2015) panal data as Korean Retirement and Income Study(KReIS). The results of this study were as follows. First, the total data of 4,197 elderly (2,212 young-old and 1,985 old-old) were analyzed. As a result, weekday and weekend leisure time of the old-old (7.64 hours / 7.81 hours) than the young-old (6.83 hour / 7.39 hour) was increased and resting activites (over 70% of watching TV and listening to the radio) accounted for more than 80% of the both elderly leisure activities. Leisure performance were higher in old-old who did not perform preferred leisure activities during weekdays. Leisure performance on weekends was higher in old-old regardless of whether they had preferred leisure time. Average of leisure performance was high in both groups and they responded leisure satisfaction was moderate. In the case of need for leisure change, young-old was higher than oid-old regardless of preference leisure performance and day of the week. However, the responses of the both groups are closed to those that do not want to change. Based on the results of this study, it should be practiced such as develomenting program and introduction of health management system considering leisure constraints to improve leisure satisfaction and continuance of leisure activities for young-old and old-old. We also emphasize the need for a systematic survey scale that takes into account the qualitative aspects of leisure activities as well as the subjective factors influencing leisure participation.
With the increase of the aging population in Korea, the welfare of Korean elderly has become one of main concerns of the society. One essential factor that may enhance the quality of life of the elderly is the active social participation. Involvement in the volunteer activity is one form of social participation that benefits both society and individual. The purpose of this study is to examine the level of Korean elderly's participation in volunteer activities and factors related to their participation in the context of different age group. People aged 55 and over from wave 2 data of Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing are grouped into pre-old(55-64), young old(65-75), and old old (75 and older). Main analytic tools include descriptive statistics and logistic regression analysis. Results indicated that social relationships of the elderly were the most important factors related with their participation with voluntary activities. Also highlighted is the importance of considering the diversity among the older population.
Objectives: This study examined the characteristics and nutritional risk of the elderly who receive home delivery services. We then analyzed the effects of the characteristics of the elderly who receive the home-delivery meal service on their nutritional risk. Methods: A total of 220 respondents who receive home-delivery meal service in Seoul participated in the survey. The survey consisted of the characteristics of the elderly (health status, tooth condition, physical activity, social participation activity, depression and relationship with neighbors), nutritional risk assessment and other general matters. The data was analyzed by using the SPSS program. Cross-tabulation analysis, t-test, correlation analysis and regression analysis were all conducted. Results: 47.0% of the subjects were under 80 years old and 53.0% were over 80 years old, The nutritional risk score, as evaluated by a Nutrition Screening Initiative (NSI) checklist was 10.7 points, and the high nutrition risk group was 91.5% of the subjects. The subjective self-health status score was 2.24 points (out of a total of 5 points) and the tooth status score was 3.30 points. The physical activity level was 2.17 points for the under 80 years old group and 1.76 points for the over 80 years old, and there was a significant difference according to age (p<0.01), The higher the health status, tooth condition, physical activity and social participation activity level, the lower was the nutritional risk. Further, the higher the degree of depression, the higher was the nutritional risk. Conclusions: For the healthy life of the elderly in the community, various welfare policies should be planned to increase social participation as well as to promote physical health and reduce depression.
Although the majority of elderly are residentially stable, many western studies have recently reported that there has been a gradual growth of retirement migration. However, little is known about that in Korea. Therefore, this study intended to examine the trend and nature of elderly migration. For this purpose, inter- and intra-province migration among the aged 65 and over were analyzed, using the migration data of the Korea National Statistical Office, compiled from the 2000 and 2006 resident registration records. The results were as follows. First, there was an increase of elderly migrants to 531 thousand persons in 2006 from 383 thousand persons in 2000. Secondly, the migration rate of elderly has steadily grown with a 11.7% in 2000 and 12% in 2006. Also, the move of female among old population was active but this trend tended to decrease in 2006. Thirdly, the number of provinces which showed a positive net inter-province migration of old population increased from 7 provinces in 2000 to 8 provinces in 2006. Fourthly, we found that the destinations of elderly migrants were mostly neighboring province except the Chungnam, Jeonbuk, and Jeju. These results suggested that elderly migration would be expected to increase gradually and be important in the future of Korea.

This study aims to understand the meaning that learning of the old age has, through old age learners who augustly live after retirement-life so called successful silver years. Qualitative research methods is used for analyzing the contents of articles about 15 old age learners and the results are follows below. First, the retirement has dual meaning for the old learners. One is they experienced psychological and emotional insecurity after retirement and the other is it is a turning point for them to realize their longtime dream. Second, the old age learners showed enthusiasm about learning and they voluntarily found the way of success in their silver years. Finally, the old age learners working in new career with provocative and enthusiastic attitude work as a role model of successful old age life and show how they progress. This study argued that we need to consider the old as active agents and the old age as the time when productive and continuous learning can be done. In addition, this study strongly insisted that we need to realize the importance of 'education by the elderly' and social and other relevant conditions are needed to be established immediately.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the prevalence of osteoarthritis and its risk factors among a community dwelling population age 60-74 and 75 and over (young-old vs. old-old) in Korea. Methods: A total of 1,389 of age 60-74 and 397 of age 75 and over from the 2010 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) were selected. The data analysis was performed using the complex sampling function of SPSS version 19.0. Results: The prevalence of osteoarthritis was greater for old-old people (35.50%) compared to young-old people (18.20%). Univariate logistic regression analysis shows that the difference of risk factors for osteoarthritis between young-old and old-old elderly people. The prevalence of osteoarthritis in young-old people was associated with lower education levels; performance of moderate intensity physical activity; higher waist circumference, whereas old-old people was most affected in females; depression and experience. Conclusion: The finding of differences in the prevalence of osteoarthritis and its' risk factors between young-old and old-old people is expected to promote the screening strategy for the aged at risk of osteoarthritis in the Korean community.

Purpose : The purpose of this study is to examine inter-and intra-rater reliabilities of myotonometric measurements of tone, elasticity and stiffness for the erector spinae muscles of the young and the elderly populations. Methods : A total of 102 (69 young adults from K university and 33 older adults from the D community center in Daejeon) were enrolled in this study. The two different raters measured each side of the erector spinae muscles at prone position. After each rater performed first measurement for a subject, 30 minutes of rest was given. The same rater then repeated the second myometric measurement on the subject. The collected data on the tone, elasticity, and stiffness of the erector spinae were analyzed using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) to determine inter- and intra- rater reliabilities. Results : The inter-and intra-rater reliabilities of the myotonometric measurement of the erector spinae for the total subjects were excellent (ICC > 0.9, p < 0.001). Within each of the elderly group and the young group, inter- and intra-rater reliabilities were also excellent (ICC > 0.8~0.9 / p < 0.001, ICC > 0.75~0.9 / p < 0.001, each). Conclusion : The measurement of muscle tone, elasticity, and stiffness for the erector spinae muscles using the myotonometer had excellent reliability. It was confirmed that a highly reliable myometric measurement on the erector spinae can be obtained regardless of whether it is from young or elderly people. This suggests that the myotonometer can be a useful tool to measure muscular properties of the erector spinae of the young and old as an evaluative instrument.
Objectives: This study analyzes whether the leisure activities satisfaction of elderly and older elderly patients differs with population sociology characteristics for the leisure activities services provided by geriatric hospitals, and to provide basic information to make reasonable decisions. Methods: Difference Analysis of the difference (T-test, ANOVA) in leisure activities satisfaction was conducted for the elderly and older elderly patients hospitalized in nine hospitals. Results: First, In the planning stage of leisure activity program, it is necessary to consider the tendency of men and women to prefer gender-based leisure activity service. Second, It was found that old elderly patients were more in number than elderly patients. Third, managers of geriatric hospitals in Busan and Kyungnam area should consider the needs of the patients in the planning and implementation of leisure activities and improve their leisure activity programs or develop more programs for better customer satisfaction.
