  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of variables on young children's external aggression and relational aggression. Specifically, young children's temperaments and gender differences, parental marital conflicts, fathers' anti-social behaviors, mothers' child-rearing behaviors and psychological characteristics were studied. The findings of the study were as follows: Firstly, it was found that male children exhibited a higher level of external aggression than female children, while there was no significant difference between male and female children in terms of relational aggression. Secondly, analysis of variables such as children's temperaments and domestic environments revealed that fathers' anti-social behaviors, the adaptability of young children's temperaments and mothers' depression tendency have significant explanatory adequacies for young children's relational aggression. Furthermore, gender difference adaptability, activity and emotionality of young children's temperaments, in addition to parental marital conflicts, also have significant explanatory adequacies for young children's external aggression.

  • This study examined the effects of a meditation program using picture books as a method of reducing young children's aggression. Data was taken from a sample of 60 four-to five-year-old children in daycare centers. This study employed a pre/post-test controlgroup design. All children of each daycare center were assigned to an experimental group(meditation program using picture books) or control group(general music meditation program). All variables were measured by the mothers and teachers of the observed children and the collected data were analyzed by independent and paired t-test. The main results of this study are as follows. Firstly, the meditation program using picture books and general music meditation program were all effective in reducing young children's aggression (aggression against things, aggression against others, verbal aggressin and total aggression) perceived by their teachers, that is, aggression against things, aggression against others and verbal aggression. Secondly, the meditation program using picture books was more effective than general music meditation program in reducing young children's aggression perceived by teachers. Thirdly, the meditation program using picture books was effective in reducing only young children's verbal aggression perceived by their mothers.

  • This study examined the effects of young children's effortful control and emotional regulation, teacher-child conflictual relationships on young children's overt and relational aggression. The subjects of this study were 372, 3-5 years old children and their teachers. Young children's aggression, effortful control, emotional regulation, and teacher-child relationships were assessed by a teacher's report. The collected data were analyzed by t -test, Pearson correlations, and pathway analysis. The results were as follows: first, the boys' overt aggression was found to be greater than that of the girls,' while, there was no difference in relational aggression between boys and girls. Second, the boys' and girls' effortful control was found to affect the young children's overt and relational aggression indirectly through emotional regulation, and teacher-child conflictual relationships. For the girls, effortful control was found to affect overt aggression directly. Third, teacher-child conflictual relationships and emotional regulation were found to affect boys' and girls' overt and relational aggression directly and to mediate between boys' and girls' effortful control and overt and relational aggression. Further, for girls, emotional regulation was found to mediate between teacher-child conflictual relationships and overt and relational aggression. Additionally, effortful control was found to be the most important variable predicting boys' and girls' overt aggression, while a teacher-child conflictual relationship was the most important variable for boys' and girls' relational aggression.

  • This study focused on the relationship between young children's aggression and associated relative factors, so that we set young children's temperament, young children's self-regulation ability, mother's parenting efficacy, and mother's parenting behavior as associated relative factors. Therefore, we researched how these associated relative factors could affect young children's aggression. Subjects were 350 young children and their mothers who were attending nine kindergarten in I-city and J-city, Jeonlabuk-do. Statistics and methods used for data analysis were Cronbach's alpha, Pearson's correlation and Multiple Regression. Result's are as followings: First, as we researched into the correlation between young children's aggression and associated relative factors, we found that there were significant correlation in young children's temperament and mother's parenting efficacy, mother's indulgent and permissive parenting behavior, and controlled parenting behavior. Second, as we researched into the efficacy between young children's aggression and associated relative factors, we found that young children's aggression was directly affected by young children's active character that is one of young children's temperaments, young children's self-regulation ability, mother's active involvement in parenting behavior, mother's indulgent and permissive parenting behavior, and mother's controlled parenting behavior. That is, young children's aggression was 22% affected by these associated relative factors.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of mother's characteristics, mediated by disciplinary methods and young children's emotional regulation, on young children's aggression. Subjects of this study consisted of 342 young children drawn from seven preschools in Cheongju city. The pilot study was used to examine the applicability of survey instrument. Data were analyzed by the method of frequency, percentage, Cronbach' ${\alpha}$, factor analysis, T-test. F-test, and Duncan post-hoc test using SPSSWIN program. The test of model was done with analysis of correlational matrix in LISREL VII package using a maximum likehood estimation. The results of this research were as follows: First, there were statistically significant differences in mother's characteristics consisting of neurosis symptom and extroversions, disciplinary methods consisting of coercive-punishment and indifferent-irresponsibility, young children's emotional regulation, and young children's aggression consisting of relation and overtness according to some socio-demographic variables. Girls had the higher emotional regulation than boys. Second, the direct effects of disciplinary methods and emotional regulation on boys' aggression were different in between relational and overt aggression. Third, the variables predicting boys' emotional regulation directly were the same in both relational and overt aggression. Forth, the direct effect of mother's characteristics on disciplinary methods was different in between coercive-punishment and indifferent-irresponsibility. Fifth, the indirect effects of mother's characteristics, mediated by disciplinary methods and young children's emotional regulation, on young children's aggression were partly supported in this study. Sixth, the theoretical model of the impact of mother's characteristics, disciplinary methods, and young children's emotional regulation on young children's aggression was different according to gender.

  • The present study investigated the direct and interactive effects of children's temperament and mothers' reactions to hypothetical vignettes of children's aggression on 3- to 6-year-old children's overt aggression (OA) and relational aggression (RA). A total of 317 mothers of 3- to 6-year-old children and 26 teachers from eight day-care centers and kindergartens were contacted. Each mother reported her child's background, assessed her child's temperament and responded to the Mothers' Reaction to Hypothetical Vignettes of Children's Aggression (MRCA) scale. Children's OA and RA were assessed by teachers. Results showed that high levels of children's surgency predicted children's OA and RA. Although mothers' reactions did not predict children's OA and RA directly, significant interactions indicated that mothers' restrictive reactions were more strongly related to children's OA for children with high levels of surgency and low levels of effortful control. In addition, mothers' responsive reactions were more strongly related to children's OA for children with low levels of surgency. This study demonstrates that relative contributions of children's temperament and mothers' reactions differ according to the form of children's aggression. It also shows that certain types and levels of mothers' reactions to children's aggressive behavior can be critical for children with certain types and levels of temperament in developing children's overt aggression. The findings of this study can be applied to building early prevention and future intervention programs for young children's aggression.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to identify the longitudinal reciprocal relationship between young children's vocabulary ability and physical aggression in young children. Methods: Two waves of panel data(2013/2015) from the Panel Study of Korean Children were analyzed in this study by using an adapted version of Autoregressive cross-lagged modeling. A total of 306 five-year-old and seven-year-old preschoolers, and their mothers participated in the study. Autoregressive cross-lagged modeling for multiple groups was conducted by using AMOS 24.0. Results: First, vocabulary ability and physical aggression showed stability over time. Second, young children's vocabulary ability(t) had a statistically significant effect on physical aggression(t+1). Conclusion/Implications: This study confirmed the interrelationships of young children's vocabulary ability and physical aggression by examining longitudinal data using the longitudinal analysis method. This study highlights the importance of developing interventions to support language development with aggressive children. The results of the present study can be used as a source in developing policies for aggressive children and their parents.

  • This study examined relationships between caregivers' attachment, young children's emotion regulation, and aggression. Subjects were 110 institutionalized and 105 home-reared children (M=3.8 and 4.2 years, respectively). Data were collected from children's caregivers via questionnaires and analyzed by ANOVA, correlations, and hierarchical regressions. Results showed that (1) caregivers' attachment and the emotion regulation and aggression of institutionalized children were significantly different from those of home-reared children; (2) caregiver's attachment was positively related to emotion regulation for both institutionalized and home-reared children; (3) for institutional children, negative relationships between attachment and aggression was found for girls; negative relationships between emotion regulation and aggression was found for boys. These findings underscore negative effects of institutionalized care on children's socio-emotional behaviors.

  • The purpose of this study was to interpret relational aggression strategies in 4 year old young children's interactions in 'Sansae class' in terms of two-fold dimensions of proactivity and reactivity. Following an ethnographical approach, participative observation on young children and in-depth interviews with the teacher were employed, over the course of 30 sessions of 3 hours duration. The results are as follows; proactive relational aggression was more frequently observed in girls, and their major strategies employed against someone they disliked were ignoring them, distorting play-rules, and so on. Major strategies of reactive relational aggression in girls were largely manipulative in nature, for example, 'threatening their friend' and 'withdrawal of friendship'.
