  • Purpose: This study was aimed to investigate the effects of gum-chewing on the recovery of bowel movement and oral cavity discomfort after abdominal surgery. Method: The nonequivalent control group, non-syncronized repeated treatment design was used. A total of 99 patients were participated in the study. The 44 patients were in the experimental group and the rest in the control group. The experimental group chewed gum three times a day until they passed gas. As the patient reported gas-passing, bowel movement time, subjective symptoms of oral cavity, and oral status were recorded precisely. The frequency, percentage, $x^2$-test and t-test were analyzed by SPSS PC 12.0. Results: There were significant differences in bowel movement, gas passing, oral cavity symptoms, and oral status scores between the experimental and the control group. Conclusion: The findings of the study demonstrated the fact that gum-chewing helps early recovery from post-operative ileus and thirst. It is because gum chewing stimulates bowel mobility and secretion of saliva. Thus gum-chewing seems to be an effective nursing intervention in reducing post-operative side effects for patients with abdominal surgery.

  • The purpose of this study was to suggest the vegetation structure and management plan of forests at Anmyundo. Sixteen plot were established in the forests and surveyed. The plant communities were classified into three community type, which were Pinus densiflora-Quercus serrata community, Pinus densiflora community, Quercus variabilis community. It was hypothesized that Pinus densiflora-Quercus serrata community will be changed to Quercus Spp. community. The vegetation management for successional controls on long-term basis was suggested. Dominant trees were mid-size trees(21~30year-old and DBH 18~28cm), and large trees(over DBH 30cm) appeared only at the Recreation Forest and Kuksabong. Anmyundo forests should be managed with a priority given to Pinus densifolra. Forest trees should be planted in consideration of environmental conditions and Pinus densifolra densities.

  • Rural Amenity Design Competition is opened every year since 2003 having an intention of improving spatial design and planning of rural area through developing values of rural amenity resources and applying in that area. The subject of this competition is broad and there's no limit in locations so that various solutions and original ideas could be proposed. This research examined 165 prizewinning works of the competition and analyzed the locations and areas, aims, main resources, spatial planning contents and experience programs to find out trends of rural spatial design. According to the study, the prizewinning works tends to 1) include spatial plan for an existing village planning, 2) aim rural tourism for citizens and increasement of resident's incomes, 3) develop vegetation and agricultural resources, 4) plan for natural landscape, commercialization of local special productions and agriculture, and 5) propose ecological experience programs. The same theme of the competition repeated every year had led to advanced design skills but also a stagnant of design contents. A subject and a main goal of the Rural Amenity Design Competition should be departmentalized each time hereafter to make for the weak points and propose progressive direction for the rural spatial design.

  • Objective: Bee venom (BV) has been used for the treatment of inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and relief of pain in Oriental medicine. The two main components of BV are melittin and phospholipase A2 (PLA2). Of these, melittin, the major active ingredient of BV, has been reported to induce apoptosis and to possess anti tumor effects. Several studies have established that the agents inducing apoptosis in target organs suppress tumorigenesis. As the other component, PLA2 has been reported to induce neurite outgrowth in PC12 cells. However, there was no report about proliferative effect of BV in neuronal cells. In order to examine the effect of BV on glioma cell, human glioma cell line, U87 was used. Methods: Analysis of proliferation was confirmed by MTT assay. BV increased cell number through dose and duration dependent manner and these effects are apparent at a concentration of 10 ug/ml. To observe which signaling molecules will be activated by BV, phosphorylation of Akt, MAPK, PYK2 or CREB were examined by Western blot analysis. To study the long term effect of BV in U87 cells, the image of cells treated with BV for 4 days were obtained. Results: The phosphorylation levels of PYK2 and Akt were increased at 5 min after addition of 10 ug/ml of BV and sustained to 2 hours. On the other hand, phosphorylation of MAPK and CREB were increased at 5 min, maximum at 10 min, and returned to 30 min. These imply that BV may activate two different signaling pathways, PYK2/Akt and MAPK/CREB. BV treated cells showed increased neurite number and length. Conclusion: These results propose that BV may induce differentiation as well as proliferation of U87 cells through the activation of PYK2/ Akt and MAPK/ CREB.

  • This study was carried out to obtain the basic information for quality changes according to degree of exposed sunlight after harvest of aerial part in Saururus chinensis Baill. Top part harvested was exposed to sunlight from 0 to 3 hours with 1-hour interval, and was dried at $50^{\circ}C$ hot air. The values were higher at shorter time of sunlight exposure, while the opposite is the true to the a values. The b and c values were high at 2-hour exposure before drying. Those were higher at shorter time of sunlight exposure after drying, but showed opposite tendency in tang-jeon. The contents of rutin and quercitrin, and astringency were greater at shorter time of sunlight exposure. Preference of quality and tang-jeon showed similar tendency with those.

  • Purpose: It has been reported that the survival of patients with locally advanced gastric cancer (LAGC) is better in East Asia countries than in developed western countries; however, the prognosis of LAGC remains poor. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of perioperative chemotherapy on the long-term survival of East Asia patients with LAGC. Materials and Methods: From October 2006 through August 2008, 43 patients with LAGC received perioperative S-1 combined with weekly docetaxel in a phase II study (neoadjuvant group). These patients were matched using propensity scores to patients who underwent surgery without neoadjuvant chemotherapy during the same period (surgery group). The surgical outcomes and long-term survivals were compared between the 2 groups. Results: After matching, 43 and 86 patients were included in the neoadjuvant and surgery groups, respectively, and there was no significant difference in their baseline characteristics. Although the operating time was longer in the neoadjuvant group, there was no significant difference in postoperative complications between the 2 groups. The neoadjuvant group had a significantly higher 5-year overall survival (OS) rate (73.3% vs. 51.1%, P=0.005) and a trend towards higher 5-year progression-free survival (PFS) (62.8% vs. 49.9%, P=0.145). In the multivariate analysis, perioperative chemotherapy was an independent factor for OS, with a hazard ratio of 0.4 (P=0.005) and a marginal effect on the PFS (P=0.054). Conclusions: Perioperative chemotherapy was associated with better long-term survival without increasing postoperative complications in the setting of D2 surgery for patients with LAGC, suggesting that perioperative chemotherapy can be a therapeutic option in East Asia countries.

  • This study was carried to investigate the effect of soil texture on the growth and the contents of quercetin-glycoside and lignans, and to improve the qualities of Saururus chinensis Baill. Soil texture resulted no significant effects on the number of nodes, the number of leaves, the number of branches and dry matter ratio. However, the shoot dry weight was higher in sandy loam, loam, silt loam and sand soil in that order. Although the weight of rhizomes of below 5 mm in diameter was not significantly different among soil textures, the weight of rhizomes between 5.1 and 10.9 mm and the weight of rhizomes of above 11 mm in diameter ranged $437{\sim}465\;g$ and was larger in clay loam than in other soil textures. No significance difference was showed in rhizome dry ratio ranging from 19.1 to 20.8%. The amount of quercetin-glycoside in leaves was higher in loam and sandy loam and ranged from 219.3 to 222.4 mg/100 g of quercetin-glycoside quercitrin, rutin, isoquercitrin and hyperin were higher in that order. On the other hand, quercetin-glycoside contents in stem were 14.8 mg/100 g and 12.4 mg/100 g in sandy and sandy loam, respectively, and were higher than in other soil textures of quercetin-glycoside constituents, the content of rutin was the highest. The content of lignans was increased in clay loam, loam, sandy loam, and sandy in that order of lignans, the manassatin B was the highest.
