The simultaneous analysis of the odorous compounds designated by law in Korea and Japan was examined with the thermal desorber gas chromatography-mass spectrometry using one column. The approximate concentrations of trimethyl amine, acetaldehyde, methyl mercaptan and dimethyl sulfide were estimated. Styrene, dimethyl disulfide, propionaldehyde, n-butyl aldehyde, i-butyl aldehyde, n-valeraldehyde, i-valeraldehyde, ethyl acetate, toluene, xylene, methyl i-butyl ketone and i-butanol were detected at concentrations of the detection limits of their threshold values. As a typical example of simultaneous analysis of the odorous compounds, the volatile organic compounds emitted from compost procedure of food waste were concentrated and analyzed with thermal desorber/GC/MSD, and major malodorous compounds were estimated from the concentrations and threshold values of the detected components. From the result of analysis, 34 compounds were confirmed and among them, trimethyl amine, i-valeraldehyde, methyl mercaptan, methyl allyl sulfide, dimethyl sulfide, acetaldehyde, ethanol, n-butyaldehyde were expected to attribute to the odor in order of strength.
An analytical method for solvent-free determination of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) in water using repetitive membrane extractions coupled to cryofocusing and GC-MS was derived. BTEX compounds that permeated through a nonporous silicone membrane from the aqueous phase and evaporated into the acceptor phase were purged into a cryofocusing trap ($-100^{\circ}C$) with helium gas. The BTEX compounds, thus enriched in the trap, were thermally desorbed into a capillary column GC and detected using an MS. The flow rate of the donor phase (30 mL water) was set at 10 mL/min, and membrane extractions, accomplished by returning the water drained from the extraction module to the sample container, were repeated three times at $20{\pm}2^{\circ}C$. Although recoveries (%) were variable, from the highest for benzene (approximately 80%) to the lowest for ethylbenzene and xylenes (3.5-10%), the method showed satisfactory precision (RSD 2.2-10%) with good-linearity calibration curves ($r^2$ 0.9976-0.9997 in 1-100 ${\mu}g$/L range) for all of the compounds. The method detection limits (MDLs) ranged from 0.16 to 1.8 ${\mu}g$/L. The results showed the method's advantages such as short analysis time and overall simplicity without solvent compared to the conventional techniques.

We investigated the effects of an ethanol extract from Perilla frutescens sprouts (PFSE) as an antioxidant, and its effects on edema and inflammation in RAW 264.7 cells and HMC-1 cells. The antioxidant activities (DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging) of PFSE were similar to those of butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and (${\pm}$)-6-hydroxy-2,5,7,8-tetramethylchromane-2-carboxylic acid (Trolox). We also investigated the anti-inflammatory effects of PFSE on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells and HMC-1 cells stimulated with phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) with the calcium ionophore A23187. TNF-${\alpha}$ and IL-$1{\beta}$ production, which had been increased by treatment with LPS or PMA plus A23187, were significantly inhibited by PFSE in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, PFSE significantly reduced the xylene-induced ear edema and the carrageenan-induced paw edema of ICR mice in a dose-dependent manner. The effects of PFSE (200 mg/kg) in reducing ear and paw edema were similar to those of aspirin (50 mg/kg). These results suggest that PFSE can be potentially used as a medicine for treating oxidative stress, an edematous and inflammatory disease.

New physical properties of polymer materials were obtained by blending two or three different type of polymers. TPE is used widely in the display, automotive and electronics industries. Consumers have sought emotionally more sensitive and advanced interior automotive parts. A polymer with high foamibility (Ed note: Please check this.) and flowability would be more plausible. TPE composed of foam is a good polymer material to satisfy these trends. In this research, two different TPE were tested, focusing on foamibility and flowability. Two type of TPE were prepared. The first was blended Homo-PP, oil and SEBS. The second was Co-PP, oil and SEBS. The blending temperatures were $180^{\circ}C$, $190^{\circ}C$, and $260^{\circ}C$(second one). The blending speed was 50rpm and blending time was 5 min. The MI of the blended material was affected by the MI of PP and not affected by the blending temperature. The hardness and tensile elasticity were less affected by the MI of PP and blending temperature. The hardness and tensile elasticity were lower at a higher SEBS/Oil content ratio. The soft touch feel was higher with high SEBS/Oil contents. The IPN (Interpenentration polymer network) structure was observed by dissolving the SEBS/Oil layer in xylene. Strain-hardening phenomena also was observed. TPE behaves in a rubber and foamed closed-cell improved its stability.

A study on tile processing of liquefied fish protein with a long self life and good solubility has been carried out for the effective utilization of sardine. The whole sadine was chopped, homogenized with same amount of water and then hydrolyzed by the addition of commercial proteolytic enzyme. The hydrolysate was centrifuged and the supernatant was decolorized with active carbon, desodorized by azeotropic distillation with toluene, xylene and cyclohexane. The liquefied sardine protein was then concentrated by rotary vacuum evaporator with the addition of starch. The use of $0.2\%$ commercial proteolytic enzyme to the weight of the whole sardine showed the optimum hydrolysis ratio at $55^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours. The liquefied sardine protein could be decolorized and also desodorized by the treatment with $15\%$ active carl]on at room temperature for 30 minuted. In the view point of lipid concentration and the solubility of the product, the liquefied sardine protein prepared by enzymic hydrolysis from the sardine protein concentrate was better than that prepared by enzymic hydrolysis from the whole sardine and sardine protein concentrate.

This study was carried out to characterize the ambient VOCs concentrations of industrial complex in Daegu city. VOCs concentrations of industrial complex area appeared to be higher than those in the non-industrial complex area as following order toluene > ethylbenzene > m,p-xylenes > o-xylene but benzene and chloroform were similar to each other sites. There was seasonal variation of VOCs concentrations in the industrial complex area, higher in summer and lower in winter. In particular the industrial complex area shows that higher on weekday than weekend and higher in the daytime than in the morning or nighttime because industrial complex area influenced by the chemicals. Correlation coefficients among VOCs were confirmed that VOCs of industrial complex area were more related to each other than those of non-industrial complex area and VOCs concentrations have shown generally negative correlation with wind speed.

Ultra-violet rays are very harmful to eye health care. The blocking of ultra-violet rays and a reduction of optical reflection in the visible light range, which is to increase the share of transmitted light, and avoid the formation of ghost images in imaging, are important for the applications of polymer eyeglasses lenses. In this study, the high-refractive index polymer lenses, n=1.67, were fabricated by injection-molded method with the xylene diisocyanate monomer, 2,3-bis-1-propanethiol monomer, and benzotriazol UV absorber (SEESORB 709) mixture. To reduce the reflection of the polymer lens surfaces, multi-layer anti-reflection (AR) coatings were coated for both sides of the polymer lens using an E-beam evaporation system. The optical properties of the UV blocking polymer lens were characterized using a UV-visible spectrometer. The material properties of the thin films, which were composed AR coating layers, refractive index, and surface roughness, were analyzed by ellipsometry and atomic force microscopy. As a result, the fabricated polymer lens perfectly blocked ultra-violet rays below 395 nm with a blocking rate greater than 99%.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to understand what kinds of chemical substances have been used annually and to investigate incidents that occurred due to chemical hazard release and to analyze statistically clinically chemical injury patients who visited one regional emergency medical center in Gumi city with documented references review. Methods: Annual chemical waste emission quantity (Kg/Year) (Cwep) was reproduced using national web site data governed by the Ministry of Environment and 5 years (from 1 .Jan. 2010 to 31. Dec. 2014) of medical records of chemical injury patients who visited our emergency department were reviewed retrospectively. By applying exclusion criteria, 446 patients of 460 patients were selected. Results: Dichloromethane, Toluene, Trichloroethylene, and Xylene were always included within Top 5 of Cweq. Six cases of chemical incidents were reported and in 3 of 6 cases involving Hydrogen fluoride were included during the study period. Male gender and twenties were the most prevalent group. Injury evoking chemicals were Hydrogen fluoride, unknown, complex chemicals (over 2 substances) in sequence. The most frequent site of wounds and injuries was the respiratory tract. Gas among status, intoxication among diagnosis, and discharge among disposition was most numerous in each group. Conclusion: There have been no uniform clinical protocols for chemical wounds and injuries due to various kinds of chemicophysical properties and ignorance of antidotes. Therefore conduct of a multicenter cohort study and experiments for ruling out chemicals according to chemicophysical priority as well as development of antidotes and clinical protocols for chemical injury patients is needed.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate human health risk assessment of indoor air pollutants at small-sized public-use facilities (e.g., daycare centers, hospital and elderly care facilities) that the susceptible population is mainly used. Methods: To assess indoor air quality (IAQ), the concentrations of indoor air contaminants such as HCHO, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, styrene, PM-10, CO, $NO_2$ and $O_3$ in air samples were measured according to the Indoor Air Quality Standard Method. By conducting the questionnaire survey, the major factors influencing IAQ were identified. Human health risk assessment was carried out in the consideration of type of use (user and worker) at 75 daycare centers, 34 hospitals and 40 elderly care facilities. Results: As a result of measurement of indoor air contaminants, the average concentration of HCHO and TVOCs in hospitals was higher than daycare centers and elderly care facilities, about 8.8 and 23.5% of hospitals were exceeded by IAQ standard. In human health risk assessment, for the user of daycare centers and elderly care facilities, the mean carcinogenic risk of HCHO inhalation was higher than acceptable value. Except for HCHO, other values were determined under acceptable risk. Similarly, for the worker of hospitals, the mean carcinogenic risk of HCHO inhalation was higher than acceptable value and other values were evaluated under acceptable risk. In contrast, the risk levels of other contaminants measured in elderly care facilities were acceptable. In the determination of factors influencing IAQ, the construction year, building type, ventilation time, and the use of air cleaner were identified. Conclusions: This study provides the information for establishing the plans of public health management of IAQ at small-sized public-use facilities that have not yet been placed under the regulation. The findings suggest the consideration of human health risk assessment results for the IAQ standards.
Aromatic compounds are widely used in the chemical, food, polymer, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries and are produced by mainly chemical synthesis using benzene, toluene, and xylene or by plant extraction methods. Due to many rising threats, including the depletion of fossil fuels, global warming, the strengthening of international environmental regulations, and the excessive harvesting of plant resources, the microbial production of aromatic compounds using renewable biomass is regarded as a promising alternative. By integrating metabolic engineering with synthetic and systems biology, artificial biosynthetic pathways have been reconstituted from L-tryptophan biosynthetic pathway in relevant microorganisms, such as Escherichia coli and Corynebacterium glutamicum, enabling the production of a variety of value-added aromatic compounds, such as 5-hydroxytryptophan, serotonin, melatonin, 7-chloro-L-tryptophan, 7-bromo-L-tryptophan, indigo, indirubin, indole-3-acetic acid, violacein, and dexoyviolacein. In this review, we summarize the characteristics, usage, and biosynthetic pathways of these aromatic compounds and highlight the latest metabolic engineering strategies for the microbial production of aromatic compounds and suitable solution strategies to overcome problems in increasing production titers. It is expected that strain development based on systems metabolic engineering and the optimization of media and bioprocesses using renewable biomass will enable the development of commercially viable technologies for the microbial production of many aromatic compounds.
