This paper proposes a numerical optimization method to design the mesoscale architecture of textile composite for simultaneously enhancing mechanical and thermal properties, which compete with each other making it difficult to design intuitively. The base cell of the periodic warp and fill yarn system is served as the design space, and optimal fibre yarn geometries are found by solving the optimization problem through the proposed method. With the help of homogenization method, analytical formulae for the effective material properties as functions of the geometry parameters of plain-woven textile composites were derived, and they are used to form the inverse homogenization method to establish the design problem. These modules are then put together to form a multiobjective optimization problem, which is formulated in such a way that the optimal design depends on the weight factors predetermined by the user based on the stiffness and thermal terms in the objective function. Numerical examples illustrate that the developed method can achieve reasonable designs in terms of fibre yarn paths and geometries.
In this paper, we developed the direct numerical simulation(DNS) model considering the geometry of yams which consist of 3D orthogonal woven composite materials, and using this model, the dynamic behavior of under transverse low-velocity impact has been studied. To build up the micromechanical model considering tow spacing and waviness, an accurate unit structure is presented and used in building structural plate model based on DNS. For comparison, DNS results are compared with those of the micromechanical approach which is based on the global equivalent material properties obtained by DNS static numerical tests. The effects with yarn geometrical irregularities which are difficult to consider in a macroscopic approach are also investigated by the DNS model. Finally, the multiscale model based on the DNS concepts is developed to enhance efficiency of analysis with real sized numerical specimen and macro/micro characteristics are presented.

This paper is concerned with the long-term performance of geo-textile (GT) composites in terms of creep deformation and frictional properties. Composites of PVA GT and HDPE GM were made to investigate the advanced properties of long-term performance related to waste landfill applications. The same experiments were also performed for typical polypropylene and polyester GT and compared to PVA GT/HDPE GM composites. We also develop high performance GT composites with GM by using PVA GT, which is capable of improving the frictional properties and thus enhances long-term performance of GT composites. Experimental study reveals that the friction coefficient of GT composites is relatively large compared with those of polyester and polypropylene non-woven GT as long as the friction media has similar size to the particles of domestic standard earth. In addition, the geo-composites bonded with geo-grid by a chemical process were investigated experimentally in terms of strain evaluation and creep response values. Geo-grid plays an important role as a reinforcing material. Three kinds of geo-grid were prepared as strong yarn polyester and they were woven type, non-woven type, and wrap knitted type. The sample geo-grids were then coated with PVC. The rib tensile strength tests were conducted to evaluate geo-grid products in terms of tensile strength with regard to single rib. The test was performed according to GRI-GGI. It was concluded again from the experiments that the tensile and creep strains of the geo-grid showed such stable values that the geo-grid prepared in this study could protect geo-textile partially in practical structures.
This paper will examine the possibilities of the virtual tests of composite structures by simulating mechanical behaviors by using supercomputing technologies, which have now become easily available and powerful but relatively inexpensive. We will describe mainly the applications of large-scale finite element analysis using the direct numerical simulation (DNS), which describes composite material properties considering individual constituent properties. DNS approach is based on the full microscopic concepts, which can provide detailed information about the local interaction between the constituents and micro-failure mechanisms by separate modeling of each constituent. Various composite materials such as metal matrix composites (MMCs), active fiber composites (AFCs), boron/epoxy cross-ply laminates and 3-D orthogonal woven composites are selected as verification examples of DNS. The effective elastic moduli and impact structural characteristics of the composites are determined using the DNS models. These DNS models can also give the global and local information about deformations and influences of high local in-plane and interlaminar stresses induced by transverse impact loading at a microscopic level inside the materials. Furthermore, the multi-scale models based on DNS concepts considering microscopic and macroscopic structures simultaneously are also developed and a numerical low-velocity impact simulation is performed using these multi-scale DNS models. Through these various applications of DNS models, it can be shown that the DNS approach can provide insights of various structural behaviors of composite structures.

One of the many dilemmas that the clinical restorative dentist must face is treating young adolescent patient who prematurely loses his permanent teeth. Temporary prosthetic replacement can be achieved with removable denture, orthodontic band-wire fixed denture, adhesion bridge, composite resin splint with reinforcing material until the patients go through growth and development. But, all of these have limitations. Advances in restorative materials and reinforcement materials have made possible new techniques which are as much esthetic, conservative and more economic and stronger than adhesion brides. Two cases are being presented where gas-plasma treated, woven polyethylene fabric to reinforce composite resin was used to fabricate a temporary prosthetic restoration to replace a missing maxillary central incisor. This relatively noninvasive and basically reversible procedure allows the patient to decide the final restoration as he or she goes thorough maturation of the hard and soft tissues.

The material properties of membrane for stratospheric airship is experimentally investigated. Mechanical tensile properties of the membrane material at room, high and low temperature are measured using instron with thermal chamber. Experimentaly, material non-linearity is observed at room and high temperature. In order to simulate material non-linearity caused by the uniaxial extension curve of a woven fabric, the nonlinear hyperelastic problem is considered with finite clement program of ABAQS. Numerical results are compared with experimental results.

Tape-wrapped structures have been generally used in nozzle parts of guided missiles. A continuous band of woven composite material is wrapped around a mandrel that is designed to produce real products. After going through a vacuum bagging process, this woven composite material is cured in a high-pressure autoclave or hydroclave. However, tape-wrapped structures are difficult to analyze because of its large thickness and inclined lay-up. The present study investigates the method of analysis and failure prediction of tape-wrapped structures. The four-point bending test and its finite element analysis were performed to study how to model tape-wrapped structures and investigate their failure characteristics.
In this paper, experimental as well as numerical analysis of Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) laminated composite has been presented under ballistic impact with varying projectile nose shapes (conical, ogival and spherical) and incidence velocities. The experimental impact tests on GFRP composite plate reinforced with woven glass fiber ($0^{\circ}/90^{\circ}$)s are performed by using pneumatic gun. A three dimensional finite element model is developed in AUTODYN hydro code to validate the experimental results and to study the ballistic perforation characteristic of the target with different parametric variations. The influence of projectile nose shapes, plate thickness and incidence velocity on the variation of residual velocity, ballistic limit, contact force-time histories, energy absorption, damage pattern and damage area in the composite target have been studied. The material characterization of GFRP composite is carried out as required for the progressive damage analysis of composite. The numerical results from the present FE model in terms of residual velocity, absorbed energy, damage pattern and damage area are having close agreement with the results from the experimental impact tests.

In this study, the natural frequency and damping ratio of a four-harness satin woven glass/epoxy composite material are evaluated by means of modal tests and a finite element analysis. To achieve this goal, glass/epoxy beam specimens with different lengths and thicknesses were manufactured via autoclave curing. In the test, the maximum damping ratio was found to occur at the lowest test frequency. As the test frequency increased, the damping ratio decreased exponentially to a critical value. After that value, the damping ratio increased gradually to the maximum test frequency.
Considering the wind power system and the rotor blades which are composed of much technology, the wind power blade would be the most dangerous part because it revolves at high speed and weighs about dozens of tons, if the accident happens. Therefore, the light weight composite materials have been replacing as substitutional materials. The object of this study is to examine the delamination and damage for CFRP/GFRP hybrid composite that is used for strength improvement of a wind power blade. The influence of the initial crack length and fiber orientation for the interlaminar delamination was exposed for the blade safety. Plain woven CFRP instead of GFRP was inserted into the layer of the box spar for improving the strength and blade life. DCB(Double Cantilever Beam) specimen was used for evaluating fracture toughness and damage evaluation of interlaminar delamination. The material used in the experiment is a commercial material known as CF 3327 EPC in plain woven carbon prepreg(Hankuk Carbon Co.) and UD glass fiber prepreg(Hyundai Fiber Co.). From the results, crack growth rate is not so different according to the variation of the initial crack length. Mode I interlamainar fracture toughness of fiber direction $0^{\circ}$ is higher than that of $45^{\circ}$. Interlaminar fracture has an effect on fiber direction and K decreased with lower value according to increasing initial crack length. Also energy release rate fracture toughness was evaluated because CFRP/GFRP hybrid composite with a different thickness is under the mixed mode loading condition. The interlaminar fracture was almost governed by mode I fracture even though the mixed mode.
