  • To assess a various of workplace noise environment in the tunnel construction site, the measurement is performed while tunnel constructing work. This study focuses on the sound attenuation according to the sound frequency characteristics and the distance from various works in the tunnel. Also, the noise distribution while blasting work is measured according to distance in this study. In addition, the boring processing, muck treatment, and tunnel lining by distance are measured for the noise distributions.

  • In the present study, annoyance caused by diverse construction noises was evaluated through surveys. A survey with a total of 110 construction workers was carried out to investigate annoyance from construction noises at different construction phases. The most effective item of adverse by construction noise was annoyance and the most annoyed construction stage was destruction construction. There were high correlation between work performance and work safety as well as work safety and speech interference. Participant's noise sensitivity were significant between low and high group at work performance, work safety, speech interference.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the whole-body vibration and occupational noise for excavator drivers. Measurement, evaluation and assessment were based on the ISO 2631 and OSHA. Average vibration level was 0.65m/$s^2$(z axis) for breaking work and 0.36 m/$s^2$(z axis) for excavating work. Vibration levels during breaking work exceed the health guidance caution zone and this means that the drivers are exposed to potential health risks. Average daily noise exposure level was 86.4 dB(A) for breaking work and 84.6 dB(A) for excavating work.

  • The performance of sound barriers was evaluated to determine their technical effectiveness and practicality in reducing noise exposures to operating engineers in construction. Commercially purchased sound dampening mats (SDMats) were installed inside three heavy-equipment engine compartments. Sound pressure levels (SPLs) were measured before and after installing the SDMats while the equipment was on idle and full-throttle settings where it normally operates. SPLs inside the heavy-equipment operator cabs were significantly reduced by 5.6-7.6 dBA on the full-throttle setting following installation of the SDMats (p < 0.01). The evaluated engineering control intervention was simple to install, affordable, and substantially reduced the engine noise reaching the heavy-equipment operator, potentially reducing reliance on hearing-protection devices to protect construction workers from noise exposures.

  • Prescribed according to the occupational safety and health low noise measurement method was changed to personal sampling in the method to measure an area noise. Such method had the limit which did not evaluated characteristic of sound of occurrence and the place of origin. This study was peformed to establish an engineering remedy of the work-place noise. The subject was a vibration control process of the place of business in Pusan. A simulation program applied for an engineering improvement of the work-place noise. The results were as follows: 1. An noise occurrence level of the work-place before improvement was $88^{\sim}97dB(A)$, We applied an improvement method to be established and were expected to $80^{\sim}l19dB(A)$, 2. The level of the noise-distribution to appear in the place of origin of the work-place before improvement was $90^{\sim}93dB(A)$ but, We executed the simulation after applied an engineering remedy and predicted $80^{\sim}85dB(A)$. A result of the simulation blue part was changed mostly into the dark blue color. The results suggest that simulation program establishes an engineering remedy and is useful to the case to apply.

  • Objectives: The study was performed to investigate characteristics of hazardous factors regarding chemical(liquid lime) tank dredging workers by case survey. Methods: Field data such as working condition, MSDS and respirators applied to chemical tank dredging work were analyzed and the work environmental factors of noise and indoor air quality were measured to compare existing data with actual work situations. Results: No health hazards to workers due to working conditions were confirmed during dredging work inside the chemical storage tank. All air quality measurement data during dredging work satisfied the management standards, and there were no by-products. During dredging work, there was a significant change in noise depending on the type of work, but considering the noise reduction rate(NRR) of the earplugs worn by workers, there was no actual health hazard due to noise exposure. Conclusions: A fit test for respirator and the expiration date of the safety helmet should be observed to ensure an appropriate level of safety and health for dredging workers in the chemical storage tank.

  • The demand of blasting work in civil engineering work is increasing because of the increasing social infra-structural construction work. The blasting method creates large benefit in regard to the economic aspect and shortening construction period. This method, however, has problems to be solved in respect to the blasting vibration and noise. Blasting vibration and noise have been studied by many workers, regarding to the impact on the structure and human body. This investigation is concerned on the affect of blasting vibration and noise on the animals which is relatively new. In general, animals have inferior mental capacity than human in hearing but have higher sensitivity on the vibration and noise due to blasting. The object of this study is to investigate an appropriate measurement of lessening damage on the animals by vibration and noise due to blasting.

  • Construction equipment noise has caused much annoyance for a number of dwellers in nearby construction field and it has become a very serious issue in our living environment. Therefore, in our country, a practical solution and a better method of reducing construction equipment noise are highly required in construction field. Practical solutions for the construction equipment noise, however, are very difficult to obtain, because of the lack of basic data and insufficient research works. Especially, in order to establish a successful sound isolation plan for piling work noise, which has high sound pressure level, the characteristics of the impact noise should be closely monitored and analyzed. This study attempts to survey the characteristics of attenuation and propagation of construction equipment noise in piling work by SIP(soilcement injected precast pile) method. In addition, this study intends to get the basic data to establish a standard about construction noise.

  • A blasting noise generated by blasting work, which is a kind of shock-noise, influences the human body. A civil appeal due to blasting noise causes work discontinuance and downsizing of a blasting scale. Most of soundproof facilities for reducing a blasting noise is installed at each working spot by itself and the degree of a noise reduction is very low. The aim of this study is to recommend a technology on noise reduction considering the method and material of soundproof facilities. As the first study step to acquire basic data, investigations on the installation time, installation method, and material of the soundproof facilities have been done at about 20 tunnel work spots such as railroad tunnel, road tunnel, tunnel for electric power.
