  • This study investigated social determinants and their interaction effects on the health of school-aged children in diverse environmental factors pertaining to the individual, family, and peers from an ecological systematic perspective. Data were drawn from the first wave of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS) developed by the National Youth Policy Institute and conducted in 2010. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, Cronbach ${\alpha}$, correlation, and hierarchical regression analysis using SPSS ver. 18. The results from this study showed that sex and age were related to the health of school-aged children, as social determinants. Self-rated levels of the health of boys and younger children were more positive than girls and older children; in addition, levels of self-resilience, satisfaction of peer relation, and parenting rearing attitude were found to have a positive impact on self-rated levels of the health of school-aged children as protective factors. Especially, according to the result of interaction analysis between factors, self-resilience, and parenting rearing attitude were moderators of the effects on between sex and household income and self-rated level of the health of school-aged children respectively. The findings from this study suggested the need to expand the social intervention range to improve school-aged children's health.

  • Most previous studies on income inequality have limitations in reflecting recent changes and heterogeneity in women's working patterns and their family structure by regarding them as a homogeneous group. This study aims to investigate the trends of income inequality among women during the past 9 years since 1997 and to examine what is the most influential factor on these changes. The results show that the overall trend of income inequality among women is decreasing due to the income decrease of the middle class women and the income increase of the lower class. Among various factors, education, age, and marital status are key factors affecting inequality changes during this period. This study has the following policy implications: first, it is necessary to implement the child care services for the divorced and separated women, who are more likely to fall in poverty. Second, the increase of the basic pension benefits is needed particularly for the poor old women, who is more likely live longer in a desperate status.

  • This study was conducted to verify the impact of social capital on labor market entry for poor and disabled women and to reveal the relationship. In the case of poverty-stricken and disabled women, the reality is that there is very little research on the impact on labor market entry depending on the level and type of social capital that disabled women possess or are involved in for economic activities. Therefore, in this study, we looked at how the level and type of social capital possessed by poor and disabled women affects their entry into the labor market. As a result of the study, the level of social capital of poor and disabled women is larger and the stronger the density, the more labor market they have. It was found to have a very significant impact on market entry, and in terms of social capital type, greater trust and participation were found to have a very significant impact on labor market entry. Based on these research results, major policy implications were suggested regarding the impact of the level and type of social capital of poor and disabled women on their entry into the labor market.

  • Managing hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) becomes an important issue with the amendment of the Clean Air Conservation Act in 2012. In this study, to develop an effective air quality management policy direction against the HAPs in Korea, (1) the HAPs control policies in the USA, United Kingdom, Japan, and the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SQAQMD) are reviewed, (2) the state of the art of the HAPs management in Korea are studied, and (3) policy directions are suggested. It was found that each country has its own policy priority and management directions. It was also found that the current HAPs management status is far behind to the countries compared in HAPs identification, emission inventory, monitoring, modeling, and risk management. Further policy directions are suggested.

  • This study was attempted to investigate the possible association of osteoarthritis with the metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components in Korean adults based on the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). The prevalence of MetS was significantly increased in OA group in women. To investigate the association between the components for MetS and osteoarthritis, we analyzed the mean values of 5 components of MetS, waist circumference (WC), triglyceride (TG), HDL-cholesterol, systolic blood pressure, and fasting plasma glucose in normal and OA group. In women, WC, TG, HDL, and systolic blood pressure were associated with the development of OA. Moreover, accumulation of components of MetS was significantly related to the prevalence of OA in Korean men and women. These data suggest that MetS might be a novel risk factor for OA and MetS should be taken into account in the prevention and treatment of OA for Korean adults as well.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify menopausal resilience in middle-aged women. The data were collected from 227 middle-aged women who participated in friendship and religious activities in the Jeonbuk province. The data were collected through self-report questionnaires, which were constructed to Self-efficacy, family support, social support, menopausal adaptation, resilience. Data were analyzed using frequencies, means, $X^2$_Test, pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 23. Regular exercise(${\beta}=-.15$, p<.01), self-efficacy(${\beta}=.29$, p=<.001), social support(${\beta}=.29$, p=<.001), menopausal Adaptation(${\beta}=.17$, p<.01) were influencing factors and these variables showed an explanatory power of 35.3% (F=18.65, p<.001). Therefore, it is suggested that middle-aged women in menopause can plan to overcome the menopausal crisis positively through nursing interventions that include self-efficacy and social support.
