  • The present study purported to understand the relationships between SNS appearance-related photo activity, body image and self-esteem among young women. Objectification Theory and Social Comparison Theory explain the process how young women's SNS appearance-related photo activity influence their body satisfaction through a perceived media pressure, objectification of their own bodies and appearance comparison. These process ultimately affect the self-esteem of young female users. A research model was proposed and related hypothesis were examined. We collected an online questionnaire from 400 female participants in their 20's. Data were analyzed using SPSS 23.0 and AMOS 18.0. Structural equation modeling analyses suggested that the proposed research model provided a good fit to the data and supported most hypothesis. The results indicated that the level of SNS appearance-related photo activity significantly influences young female user's body satisfaction and self-esteem. The findings of this study were consistent with previous literature on media and body image. Limitations and future research suggestions were also described.

  • Current studies validate the Body Positive Scale (BP Scale) as a self-assessment instrument that captures four dimensions of the positive body image construct. We developed and evaluated a 17-item BP Scale using two focus group interviews and four independent samples (n = 1,379) of Korean women who completed online survey questionnaires. We generated an initial pool of items via literature review, content validation with experts, and focus group interviews, subsequently refining the items through exploratory analysis (Study 1). We confirmed the BP Scale's underlying dimensions with young Korean female samples (Study 2, Study 4) and with a community sample (Study 3). We also examined the construct validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability over a six-week interval. Overall, the results supported that the four-factor BP Scale demonstrates adequate validity and reliability in measuring positive body image among Korean women. The BP Scale provides a method for researchers and practitioners to understand and assess individuals' positive body image in a multifaceted manner.

The evaluative instrument was a constructive questionnaire that consisted of 8 items of general characteristics and weight control questions, 24 questions relating to eating disorders, 17 questions pertaining to body image, 10 questions pertaining to depression and 10 questions pertaining to self-esteem. To identify the levels of an eating disorder, body image, depression and self-esteem perceived by subjects, the researcher used means and SDs. To test the significance of a subject's eating disorder, body image, depression and self-esteem according to the BMI, the researcher used the t-test. To test the correlation between the BMI, an eating disorder, body image, depression and self-esteem, the researcher used Pearson correlation coefficient. The results of this study are as follows. The mean score for anorexia nervosa was 31.52 and the mean score for bulimia nervosa was 24.12. Differences between the underweight group and the normal weight group in the level of eating disorders were significant (t=-6.94, p=.000). There were high positive correlations between the BMI and an eating disorder (r=.383, p<.01), between an eating disorder and depression (r=.161, p<.01), between body image and self-esteem (r=.653, p<.01). In addition, there were high negative correlations between an eating disorder and body image (r=-.214, p<01), between an eating disorder and self-esteem (r=-.196, p<.01), between depression and body image (r=-.541, p<.01), and between depression and self-esteem (r=-.537, p<.01). These results indicate that Korean college women need more education and counseling on dietary habits. Also, the systemic efforts reestablish the social standard of the beauty should be taken. Further empirical and experimental studies would be required for investigating for the factors influencing the eating attitude of the college women and discriminating the variables affecting the various specific dimensions of the eating attitude.

  • This study compared and analyzed the interaction visual effect of skirt silhouettes and skirt length by body mass index. This study provides basic data for women in their 20s and 30s to choose suitable skirts for their image. Twelve skirts were made, consisting of two categories of body mass index, three types of skirt silhouette and two levels of skirt length. Men and women in their 20s and 30s evaluated the visual effects of the experimental skirts using a questionnaire. The interaction effect of the visual effect following the skirt's length and silhouette by body mass index were analyzed by three-way ANOVA. Overall, a shorter the body and lower body length resulted in better vertical effects in normal weight. In terms of horizontal effects, such as lower body thickness and full-body shape, the 40 cm skirt, 50 cm tight, and A-line skirt were generally shown as better images. Skirt length helped supplement body type rather than silhouette in the overweight section. When the length was 40 cm, three skirts showed a more positive image. This study provide results for women in their 20s and 30s to choose skirts that are suitable for their image.

  • In the modern popular culture, a significant code is not the truth itself but the seeming truth. To fulfill this function, it is a mythology that has a transcendental power to eliminate any doubt and mystery. That is to say, cultural uniqueness is understood as an identical thing through mass communication, and people perceive it as a similar cultural community. In this process, mythology form and accumulate the matrix of mythological meaning by eliminating the difference between the reality and the illusion. Such a matrix forces a meaningless and unconditional truth and practice without any criticism and reconsideration. This paper tries to extract art and cultural characteristics of mythological image through examining the relationship among mythological image, history, and ideology. For this aim, we make use of Roland Barthes' signs and Daniel Boorstin's image as a basic analytical tool. After that we examine the characteristics of mythological image appeared in modern cultural discourses and the relationship between mythological image and modern popular culture. Furthermore, we consider the mythological image expressed in modern fashion, which has the nature of commodity aesthetics.
