Window is the most demanding design component in the building design. Recently, window area in the building surface has been increased significantly in the office building. As window area increased significantly, however, the thermal load has been increased significantly due to lack of thermal performance of the outside wall. In this paper, we discussed the energy consumption of the buildings according to window area ratio. Two types of building for energy consumption analysis were made by Designbuilder v.1.4 and Energyplus v.2.0. Window area ratio was five different types ($30%{\sim}70%$) in each building. As a result, the cooling energy consumption has been decreased as window area decreased in each building. Whereas the heating energy consumption has been increased window area decreased.
Nowadays, to make buildings light weight and aesthetically pleasing, curtain wall structure are commonly used. Therefore, window to wall ratio is increasing, which has caused cooling and heating load in crease in buildings as well. This phenomenon has negative impact from energy point of view. This paper analyzes window and wall convective heat gain when the slat reflectance of external and internal blinds are changed for the better understanding of the fundamentals behind the phenomena. It was observed that, if slat reflectance is increased, window transmitted solar increases and convection heat rate is clearly affected. Among six surfaces including four walls, ceiling and floor, maximum convection heat rate occurs on the south wall in summer. On the other hand, ceiling and floor showed the lowest convection heat gain, since they are shared by adjacent floors.
Recently, curtain wall structure is constructed according to increasing high rise building. Glass is usually used in opening of curtain wall structure and window area ratio is finally increased. Excessive Daylighting and solar radiation by large window area ratio cause discomfort glare and add to cooling load in the case of office that is heavy on lighting and cooling. Therefore, this study suggests to use low transmittance window for solve those problems. Indoor lighting environment and building energy performance were analyzed by increasing transmittance from 10% to 90% and comparing fixed venetian blind. Consequently, the range of transmittance that is possible to daylighting and prevent discomfort glare. Secondary energy consumption is efficient in the case that transmittance is the range of from 20% to 50%, primary energy consumption is nice on from 20% to 40%. If those result put together, the range of window transmittance from 30% to 50% is proper in the office in lighting environment and energy consumption aspects.
It is more necessary to consider the various factors for developmenting visible PV module of alternative window than traditional PV module. It must have sufficient performance which is Tvis, daylighting, daylight factor, glare index. so that more needs to consider suitable plan and total evaluated technology. Under the this background. For using commonly a combination BIPV module system and Daylinghting that can alternative architectural window, our goal on this study is drawing proper window area ratio as the window by analyzing lighting performance and glare index depending on transmittance of DSSC. On this study, we drew the result about window area ratio that can apply in the building when applying DSSC in the window. In situation that window is alternated as curtain wall in atrium that has big Widow area, if applying red 15.8% DSSC of low transmittance, it is expect to proper because it is suitable illumination standard and doesn't occur a discomfort glare. In case of office, we propose to apply red 33.2% or blue 35.2% DSSC of high transmittance for no affecting lighting load. we expect to contribute to select proper and effective window when applying the window in the building by drawing the window area ratio that can apply in thee building depending on transmittance of DSSC and offering the glare index data.
In Korea, it is necessary to improve the performance of buildings with respect to the energy efficiency while improving the quality of occupants' lives through a sustainable built environment. During the design and development process, building projects must have a comprehensive, integrated perspective that seeks to reduce heating, cooling and lighting loads through climate-responsive designs. The aim of this study is to assess the optimal window-to-wall ratio of multi-rise residential units in the early design phase in Korea. The study analyzed the variation of annual heating and cooling energy load in two apartment prototype units located in Seoul city using different WWRs. The analysis was conducted using Autodesk Ecotect Analysis 2011 tool. The study found for total annual building load reductions WWR on the south and north face should be studied independently based on the room function. It also found reducing the WWR for bedrooms and windows on the northern façade resulted in reduced total annual building load.
Solar applications analysis and building energy performance depend on the quality of the solar resource data available. Unfortunately, most of the weather stations do not measure solar radiation data in Korea, as a reason many researchers have studied different solar radiation estimation models and suggested to apply them to various locations in Korea. In addition, they also studied the impact of hourly global solar radiation on energy performance of an office building by comparing the simulated building energy consumptions using four different weather files, one using measured, and three estimated solar radiation from different models, which are Cloud-cover Radiation Model (CRM), Zhang and Huang Model (ZHM), and Meteorological Radiation Model (MRM), and concluded that there was some impact on energy performance of the building due to the using different solar radiation models. However, the result cannot be applied to all other buildings since the simulated office building for that study only used limited building characteristics such as using fixed values of solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) and window-to-wall ratio (WWR), which are significant parameters related to solar radiation that affect to the building energy consumptions. Therefore, there is a need to identify how the building energy consumption will be changed by varying these building parameters. In this study, the impact of one measured and three estimated global solar radiation on energy performance of the office building was conducted taking account of SHGC and WWR. As a result, it was identified that the impact of four different solar radiation data on energy performance of the office building was evident regardless SHGC and WWR changes, and concluded that the most suitable solar models was changed from the CRM/ZHM to the MRM as SHGC and WWR increases.
Regarding to the Domestic housing politics to improve residing environment and effective use of country land, apartment buildings have been constructed since early of 1970s. Now apartment is taking over 50% out of entire housing in Korea. In the view point of PV application to the apartment, PV has amny advantages because of the wideness of out-walls and high floors building in APT. Therefore, if APT could use the electricity produced by BIPV, we can solve more easily environment and energy problems caused by housing. The research conclusion by analysing conditions and application method to introduce BIPV application to APT in near future is as below. -The out look of APT has been developed periodically and recently gable roof or canopy is popular which PV installation is more favorable. -For Balcony part with double skin facade sassy window, It has a preferable condition to install on the wall depending on the window direction. -In case of shorter distance between buildings due to high ratio of outside measurement, it is more desirable to install PV on the roof than on the wall of Apartment by considering low solar altitude. -Also depending on the direction of APT building, it is more effective and productive in electricity in the broad surface of side wall of APT. -In case of superhigh floor APT where facade system is mostly double skin facade of curtain wall system, PV module can replace the traditional curtain wall and will reduce architectural materials and obtain various out look design thereof.
Window and shading designs have a great influence on energy consumption and daylighting in buildings. As far as energy is concerned, small window area is advantageous. But it is not good to the patient healing in hospital. So it is important to find out the optimum window shape which is favorable for both energy consumption and patient healing. In this study, annual energy consumption and daylight illumination levels were analyzed according to the window shapes and shading devices for a multi-beded patient room in hospitals. The simulations were conducted for 19 different cases by COMFEN 4.0 computer simulation program. The results of this paper are as follows. First, window to wall area ratio and shading devices have great influences on annual energy consumption. But it is a problem in that they decrease significantly daylight level in bed room. Second, considering the same energy consumption, reducing the width of window rather than the hight of window is desirable for the secure of daylight level. Third, increase of the number of horizontal shade is not desirable in south face of the building for the energy consumption and daylight level. Fourth, sun shade is not necessary in north face of the building for the energy consumption and daylight level.
The objective of this study is to evaluate the lighting dimming rates with various parameters of the building skin in a small office. We compared to simulated workplane illuminance and measured workplane illuminance for the base model. After that, the five veriables(the presence of vertical wall in double skin facade, the presence of windowsill, window to wall ratio(WWR), window visible transmittance, the width of double skin facade) were applied to base model, and we analyzed the simulated lighting energy saving rates. The results are listed as below. The simulated workplane illuminance results are similar to the measurement. Simulated illuminance was smaller than measured illuminance by 16.5%(60 lx). In accordance with applicable building skin parameters, lighting energy saving rate results are summarized as follows. Lighting energy saving rate of case1(windowsill height 0.7m) is higher than that of base case(windowsill and vertical wall) by 7.3% and the lighting energy saving rate of case2(no vertical wall) is higher than that of base case by 7.6% and the lighting energy saving rate of case3(no windowsill and vertical wall) is higher than that of base case by 12.4%. The lighting energy saving rate is increased by 2.3%, when window visible transmittance is increased from 70% to 86%. The lighting energy saving rate is increased by 4.6%, when we changed the WWR 70% to 90%. lighting energy savings rate is increased by 6.5%, when the width of double skin facade is reduced from 1m to 0.3m.
The apartment will be much more convenient than the other one in the application of green technologies, providing the merits by mass production. For example, pre-manufactured building materials can be effectively adapted to the formation of buildings. Recently, the form of double-enveloped window system has been developed for the purposed of minimizing energy loss occurred around windows. On the other hand, the expansion of balcony area was legalized and thus, a visual buffer area does not exist any more. All-glass window wall on apartment houses without a balcony produces pretty harmful area with direct sunbeam. A various types of glass can be applied to the window system and it plays a critical role in the determination of inner visual environment. For the purpose of verifying the potential of its daylighting, a mock-up model has been constructed and tested. The refurbished version of conventional window shows its illuminated characteristics. Clear and Low-e glass have been adapted for window area and daylighting ratio has been compared in both test cells.
