  • The aim of this study was to investigate the damage characteristics induced by winter freezing of evergreen broad-leaved trees distributed in urban area of warm temperate forest zone, which are gaining increased interest recently as climate change. The results of the study indicated that, as for 'stem injury', Camellia japonica Linne (59.6%) had the weakest damage, while Ternstroemia gymnanthera Sprague (83.3%) had the most severe damage. By the visual evaluation of freezing injury according to the characteristics of plantations environment, the observations of single planting (p<0.01) in planting method had weaker damage than those of group planting, the observations of under tree (p<0.001), plain (p<0.001), and organic matter plenty (p<0.05) in plantations characteristics had significant differences with relatively weaker damage than the observations of open space, slop, and scarcity, respectively. Tree height (-0.432) and crown width (-0.470) among growth factors were negatively correlated with the severity of damage, respectively. Therefore, the selection of tree species is vital for the successful creation of these urban forested area by making considerations of planting environment, and further research on evergreen broad-leaved trees is needed in this aspect.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze photoplethysmographic waveforms from pulse oximeter using raw data of red and infrared light and investigate the reference values of parameters (Height, Width50, Maximum slope, Minimum slope, Area) for evaluating pulpal blood flow in maxillary central incisors with normal pulp vitality in children. The study was performed in 30 pediatric patients, aged 7-16 years old, using pulse oximeter (MEKICS Co., Ltd, Korea) combined with a custom-made sensor. The raw data was obtained and recorded by custom-made software and analyzed by LabChart (v.7.3, ADInstruments, Germany) offline. In this study, we analyzed photoplethysmographic waveforms from pulse oximeter applied to maxillary central incisor for assessment of pulpal blood flow and suggested several reference values of young permanent maxillary central incisor with normal pulp. On average, the waveform of red light was higher, stiffer and wider than that of infrared light. Future studies about reference values for other normal teeth and the teeth with impaired pulp vitality are needed.

  • This paper attempts to locate and define a quartzite deposit in Geochang, Kyongsangnam Province in order to establish its commercial viability. The quartzite deposit (Poongwon Mine) occurs as lens or boudinage at the contact between mica schist of the Deogyusan formation and granite gneiss. During Precambrian, regional metamorphism and granitization may have caused the formation ot quartzite layers through recrystallization and rearrangement of silica components derived from older sedimentary rocks, probably chert and/or sandstone. The deposit is composed of fine-grained milky, or light yellowish quartz showing weak laminations with fairly dense and rough appearance in outcrop. It reaches about $60\;m(height)\times140\;m(length)\times35m(width)$ with attitude of $N57^{\circ}E-N8^{\circ}4E\;and\;51^{\circ}-60^{\circ}NW$. The average grade of the quartzite samples is $SiO_2=94.4\;wt\%,\;A1_2O_3=3.3\;wt\%,\; Fe_2O_3=0.8\;wt\%,\;K_2O=0.7\;wt\%$, which can be used for foundry, constructional materials, or concrete making. The proved reserve was estimated as 200,811 tonnage.

  • In this project, the efficiency of localized heating for micro systems packaging is developed by using a forced potential scheme microheater. Less than 0.2 Mpa contact pressure was used for bonding with a 200 mA current input for $50{\mu}m$ width, $2{\mu}m$ height and $8mm{\times}8mm$, $5mm{\times}5mm$, $3mm{\times}3mm$ sized phosphorus-doped poly-silicon microheater. The temperature can be raised at the bonding region to $800^{\circ}C$, and it was enough to achieve a strong and reliable bonding in 3 minutes. The IR camera test results show improved uniformity in heat distribution compared with conventional microheaters. For performing the gross leak check, IPA (Isopropanol Alcohol) was used. Since IPA has better wetability than water, it can easily penetrate small openings, and is more suitable for conducting a gross leak check. The pass ratio of bonded dies was 67%, for conventional localized heating, and 85% for our newly developed FP scheme. The bonding strength was more than 25Mpa for FP scheme packaging, which shows that FP scheme can be a good candidate for micro-scale hermetic packaging.

  • This study investigated the effects of NaCl and jasmonic acid (JA) on the growth and physiological responses of spearmint (Mentha spicata L.). Spearmint was hydroponically grown for 3 weeks in modified Hoagland solution containing 0 (untreated control), JA ($20{\mu}M$ JA pretreatment), NaCl (50 mM NaCl treatment) and JA + NaCl ($20{\mu}M$ JA pretreatment + 50 mM NaCl treatment). Growth characteristics, chlorophyll, vitamin C, proline contents, DPPH scavenging activity and inorganic ion contents were evaluated. As a results, there were significant decreases in the plant height, leaf length, leaf width, and fresh weight of plants, treated with NaCl compared with control. On the other hand, the dry matters of shoot and root treated with JA + NaCl combination were better than control or NaCl treatment. Chlorophyll a and b contents in JA treatment was the highest. Vitamin C, antioxidant activity, and proline content in shoot were increased in NaCl treatment which showed low level of growth rate. The K/Na ratio, which is known to indirectly reflect the balance of ion uptake, was higher in a single treatment of JA than the control group, while lower in salt treatment (NaCl and JA + NaCl) because of high $Na^+$ absorption. In conclusion, these results showed that moderate stress treatment such as low level salt treatment and plant growth regulator jasmonic acid (JA) application would be potential strategies to improve the quality of spearmint by inducing the accumulation of secondary metabolites containing high antioxidant activity and essential oil.

  • This study was conducted to clarify the characteristics of vocalization of laying hen related with space in battery cage. The size of cages were classified into control (0.30 m ${\times}$ 0.14 m ${\times}$ 0.55 m, length ${\times}$ width ${\times}$ height), small (0.21 m ${\times}$ 0.14 m ${\times}$ 0.55 m) and large (0.30 m ${\times}$ 0.30 m ${\times}$ 0.55 m) size. Vocalization of 16 individuals of laying hen in each group of Hy-Line Brown (80 week old) were recorded 3 hours per day (10:00am~11:00am, 3:00pm~4:00pm and 7:00pm~8:00pm) using digital recorder and microphone during October 2008 and February 2009. Characteristics of frequency, intensity and duration of vocalization were analyzed by GLM (general linear model) and Duncan's multi-test. There were differences in basic and maximum frequency, and intensity based on analysis of spectrogram and spectrum among different cage sizes. Vocalization of laying hen would be one of the indicators to understand the stress caused by rearing space in batter cage.

  • The study was conducted to investigate the possibility that epigenetic DNA methylation causes tree phenotypic variation in autotetraploids through evaluating the phenotypic variation and DNA methylation in autotetraploids occurred spontaneously from diploid trifoliate orange. Chromosome analysis confirmed that fourteen trifoliate orange trees of selected by flow cytometry were tetraploids (2n = 4X = 36) without any aneuploids. Chromomycin A3 staining determined that these trees were all autotetraploid with doubled chromosome set. Tree phenotypes, such as tree height and width, branching number, length, and angle, internode length, and leaf characteristics, varied in the autotetraploids. Chlorophyll indices were diverse in the autotetraploids, but photosynthetic rates were not significantly different. In addition, a wide range of variation was observed in stomatal density and guard cell length. Analysis of global cytosine DNA methylation showed that there was a variation of the methylation level in autotetraploids. More than half of 14 autotetraploids had at least 2 times higher methylation level than diploid trifoliate orange. The results indicate that tree phenotypic variation in autotetraploids might be related to global DNA methylation for reducing gene redundancy.

  • The objective of this research was to determine the effect of waste nutrient solution (WNS) on growth and development of poinsettia 'Gutbier V-10 Amy'. To achieve this, WNS collected from rose grown in greenhouse was diluted with various times and 500 mL of each solution was applied every week. Then growth characteristics and nutrient uptake were determined at 180 days after transplanting. The treatment of undiluted WNS had highest plant height and length of branch among treatments tested, but there were no statistical differences in the number of bract and branches. Undiluted WNS had higher leaf number, leaf length, leaf width, fresh weight, and dry weight than any other treatments tested. There was also a trend that increased dilution times of WNS resulted in decreased plant growth. Undiluted WNS had higher chlorophyll content than Hyponex treatment, but diameter of crown did not show significant differences among treatments. In the analysis of root media collected at 6 months after fertilization, the treatment of undiluted WNS had higher electrical conductivity and organic matter content than other treatments, but the Hyponex treatment had higher phosphorus concentration than other treatments tested.

  • The anterior maxillary incisor is the most traumatized region in the mouth and trauma is frequent between the ages of 8-10. Traumatic loss of teeth, can lead to many complications in children. Thus, as possible to keep traumatic teeth, but if you need extractions There may be. Complications occur and early tooth loss is frequent. Complications of early loss of central incisors are esthetic compromise, loss of vertical and horizontal width, height, contour of alveolar bone, tilting of adjacent teeth, arch length loss. Alveolar bone loss may affect normal function and stability, and results in esthetic problem for future prosthesis restoration. The 9-year-old girl and 6-year-old boy got early loss of upper central incisor. The amount of alveolar bone resorption was measured using cone beam computed tomograph and cast analysis.
