  • In 2007, a bulb rot of Allium victorialis var. platyphyllum Makino caused by Sclerotium rolfsii occurred sporadically in a herb farm at Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea. The symptom initiated with water-soaking lesion and progressed into bulb rot and wilt of a whole plant. Severely infected plants were blighted and killed eventually. White mycelial mats appeared on the lesion at early stage and a number of sclerotia were formed on the bulb. The sclerotia were spherical, $1{\sim}3 mm$ and white to brown. The optimum temperature for the growth and sclerotia formation was $30^{\circ}C$ on PDA. The hyphal width was measured $4-9{\mu}m$. The typical clamp connections were observed on PDA. Based on the symptom, mycological characteristics and pathogenicity to the host plant, this fungus was identified as Sclerotium rolfsii Saccardo. This is the first report on the bulb rot of A. victorialis var. platyphyllum caused by S. rolfsii in Korea.

  • Spent compost wheat straw is an available by-product from edible mushroom production, which constitutes a potential pollutant and is cost effective for disposal. This study was conducted to determine the nutritive value as ruminant feed of spent wheat straw compost from Agaricus bisporus mushroom production. The compost was provided from a mushroom farm, the casing soil was removed from the whole compost, and then it was sun dried and sampled for chemical analysis. An experiment was conducted, in which four wheat straw-based diets comprising control (I), 10% spent straw (II), 20% spent straw (III) and 30% spent straw (IV) were tested in a cross-over design using 8 sheep. Dry matter intake (DMI) was 74.0, 73.8, 70.2 and 57.1 and organic matter intake (OMI) was 62.7, 63.4, 58.0 and 44.4 g per kg $BW^{0.75}$ for diets I, II, III and IV, respectively, which, were significantly (p<0.05) lower for diet IV. Digestible OMI was respectively 33.1, 32.6, 30.6 and, 20.2 g per kg $BW^{0.75}$ on the four diets which were significantly (p<0.05) different between the treatments. Inclusion of spent compost straw up to 20% of the diet did not affect the digestibility of DM, OM, CF, ADF and NDF, but the diet containing 30% compost straw had statistically (p<0.05) lower digestibilities. Nitrogen balance was also significantly (p<0.05) different between the treatments.

  • A machine vision system using charge coupled device(CCD) camera for the weed detection in a radish farm was developed. Shape features were analyzed with the binary images obtained from color images of radish and weeds. Aspect, Elongation and PTB were selected as significant variables for discriminant models using the STEPDISC option. The selected variables were used in the DISCRIM procedure to compute a discriminant function for classifying images into one of the two classes. Using discriminant analysis, the successful recognition rate was 92% for radish and 98% for weeds. To recognize radish and weeds more effectively than the discriminant analysis, an artificial neural network(ANN) was used. The developed ANN model distinguished the radish from the weeds with 100%. The performance of ANNs was improved to prevent overfitting and to generalize well using a regularization method. The successful recognition rate in the farms was 93.3% for radish and 93.8% for weeds. As a whole, the machine vision system using CCD camera with the artificial neural network was useful to detect weeds in the radish farms.

  • The handling and transport of broiler birds from farm to the processing factory is known to cause injury and dead. The preslaughter period can be compromised through thermal stress, emotional stress, starvation, dehydration, metabolic exhaustion, trauma to the skin and bone fraction resulting in bruising and dead. This paper focuses on the control points of individual post Harvest stages by reference to recent literature. In catching, the injuries and deads are caused from fracture of bone, skin damage and hipbone dislocation. It can be improved by training the catchers. The primary factor of dead during transportation is from thermal stress. It is related to stocking density, type of crate and vehicle, ventilation and transportation time. Of the factors, the ventilation is very important. The holding place should be built with consideration of protection from the hostile external environment. There were not much progresses in this area, however, many researches are conducting to focus on animal welfare in European Union. Recently, it is rapidly changed in marketing custom from whole carcass to portion cut in Korea. This means the increase of economic loss due to the mishandling at post harvest. The systematic approach is demanded for this area.

  • This paper describes design and implementation of a distributed rendering management system using existing rendering module. Currently, most of 3D commercial software provide modeling, rendering and distributed environment in the whole package. So, the server and client should use the given renderer as is, without the required features. In this paper, we propose a distributed rendering management system that consist of rendering module and distributed rendering client-server. The rendering module can be executed independently and managed by the distributed rendering client. The server requests rendering for each connected client. After the execution, the server gathers rendering result from each client. After gathering, the server provides the rendering result to the user.

  • In July 2001, a destructive stem rot of tatarian aster(Aster taturicus) was occurred sporadically in exhibition farm of Gyeongsangnam-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services, in Hamyang, Korea. The fungus also caused collar and crown rot and systemic wilt or blight of whole plant. White mycelium spread over stems and petioles of infected plants and sclerotia formed on the old lesions and near the soil surface. The fungus showed maximum mycelial growth was obtained around $30^{\circ}C$ but did not grow below $5^{\circ}C$ or above $45^{\circ}C$. The mycelial width ranges $4.2{\sim}10.4{\mu}m$. and the color is white, usually many narrow mycelial stand grow in the aerial mycelium and formed clamp connection. Numerous sclerotia were formed in artificial media like PDA at $30^{\circ}C$. The shape of sclerotia were sphere and $1.0{\sim}3.2{\mu}m$ in diameter. The fungus was isolated repeatedly from the infected, tissues and confirmed its pathogenecity to aster and identified as Sclerotium rolfsii. This is the first report that Sclerotium rolfsii causes stem rot of tatarian aster in Korea.

  • This study was conducted in order to predict the chemical and physical properties by climatic factors during the growing season of flue-cured tobacco as soon as possible. The data of eight chemical and five physical properties were collected from "Analysis of physical and chemical properties on farm leaf tobacco" conducted at KT&G Central Research Institute from 1987 through 2006. Data of climatic factors from April to July in 10 districts were collected from Korea Meteorological Adminstration. Except for yellowness(b), all probabilities of linear regression equations between the climatic factors(X) and the average contents of twelve grades(whole plant) for chemical and physical properties(Y) were significant($P{\leq}0.05$). The predicable probabilities within ${\pm}20%$ range of difference were 100% in ether extract content, in nicotine content, and in filling value, 90% in total nitrogen content, and 70% in total sugar content. These results suggest that the regression equations may be useful to predict the average content of twelve grades for eight chemical and four physical properties by climatic factors during the growing season of flue-cured tobacco at the beginning of August.

  • This study was conducted in order to predict the chemical and physical properties by climatic factors during the growing season of burley tobacco as soon as possible. The data of six chemical and five physical properties were collected from "Analysis of chemical and physical properties on farm leaf tobacco" conducted at KT&G Central Research Institute from 1987 to 2006. Data of climatic factors from April to July in 6 districts were collected from Korea Meteorological Adminstration. Except for total nitrogen, total nitrogen/nicotine and yellowness(b), all probabilities of linear regression equations between the climatic factors(X) and the average contents of twelve grades(whole plant) for chemical and physical properties(Y) were significant($P{\leq}0.05$). The predicable probabilities within ${\pm}20%$ range of difference were 100% in ether extract content, 95% in nicotine content, and 90% in filling value. These results suggest that the regression equations may be useful to predict the average content of twelve grades for four chemical and four physical properties by climatic factors during the growing season of burley tobacco at the beginning of August.

  • This study aims at providing with the implication of the EU agri-environmental policy which modestly started in 1985 as an optional policy for the Member States and developed as one of main measures for the reformed CAP in 2013. The first AES was the ESA scheme which had a focus on specific areas where were regarded as having a high natural value and assisted farmers who were voluntarily participated in the scheme. Such a small scale measure has developed as a main policy of the CAP from several reforming processes. It is now applying for the entire land of the EU and necessary for every Member State to introduce the AES measures in their rural development plan. With the principle of cross-compliance and the whole farm approach, it is possible to encourage the European farmers to change their ways of farming into low-input farming. This is the best way to achieve sustainable farming and rural development. This analysis on the changing process of the AES provides the Korean government with somewhat logical perspective on the reform of agricultural policy. The most important thing is to recognise that protecting and restorating environmental and biological resource must precede economical utilising the rural resource.
