  • Outer rotor type in-wheel switched reluctance motor for Welfare neighborhood electric vehicle is researched. In-wheel system is to drive the electric vehicle without mechanical transmission, shaft, differential gears or other mechanical system. To calculate drive power for each wheels, the elder's and disable's safety driving conditions are considered. The designed outer rotor SRM has a 6-stator and 8-rotor pole. The determined dimensions as well as the stator and rotor pole arc are simulated and tested with CAD and finite element analysis to verify the performance of the proposed motor.

  • Outer rotor type in-wheel Blushless DC Motor(BLDCM) for three-wheeled electric vehicle is researched. In-wheel system is to drive the electric vehicle without mechanical transmission, shaft, differential gears or other mechanical system. The motor is designed considering the performance requirements and drive modes of the vehicle. The determined dimensions as well as the slot and rotor pole are simulated by magnetic and thermal finite element analysis and ansys workbench to analyze the performance and heating of the motor. In order to verify the performance characteristics of the proposed motor, the experiment tests are executed and satisfy well the requirements.

  • A reaction wheel is commonly used, as an important actuator, to control the attitude of a satellite. Operation of the reaction wheel plays a role of an excitation source to loading equipment inside the satellite. As requirements for environmental vibration to manifest the performance of precision equipment are getting more stringent, the research for analysis or reduction of unwanted action force in high frequency range when operating the reaction wheel is necessary. In this paper, the procedure to extract input forces and damping of a rotor system of reaction wheel is suggested. The analysis for measured action forces of reaction wheel is accomplished and important higher harmonics of action forces are determined. The input forces and damping of the rotor system are, then, extracted by curve-fitting and a particular solution for input force.

  • The paper presents the optimal design of a oil-free two-stage compressor, which is driven by 75 kW motor at an operating speed of 39,000 rpm, and the pressure ratio of which is up to 4. First, an attempt is made to obtain the optimal design of a bump bearing which supports a compressor rotor. Second, bump bearings and shaft are considered simultaneously, and the weighted sum of rotor weight and frictional torque is minimized. Finally, the optimal geometry of compressor wheel is considered. The mean efficiency and the - minimum efficiency are maximized respectively. The results presented in this paper provide important design information necessary to reduce the energy loss.

  • In recent years, flux switching machines (FSMs) have been an attractive research topic owing to their tremendous advantages of robust rotor structure, high torque, and high power capability suitable for intensive applications. However, most of the investigations are focusing on the inner-rotor structure, which is incongruous for direct drive applications. In this study, high torque and power densities of a new 12S-14P outer-rotor permanent magnet (PM) FSM with a DC excitation coil was investigated based on two-dimensional finite element analysis for in-wheel direct drive electric vehicle (EV). Based on some design restrictions and specifications, design refinements were conducted on the original design machine by using the deterministic optimization approach. With only 1.0 kg PM, the final design machine achieved the maximum torque and power densities of 12.4 Nm/kg and 5.93 kW/kg, respectively, slightly better than the inner-rotor HEFSM and interior PM synchronous machine design for EV.

  • Modern high-performance automotive turbochargers (TCs) implement ceramic hybrid angular contact ball bearings in series with squeeze film dampers (SFDs) to enhance transient responses, thereby reducing the overall emission levels. The current study predicts the rotordynamic responses of the commercial automotive TCs (compressor wheel diameter = ~53 mm, turbine wheel diameter = ~43 mm, and shaft diameter at the bearing locations = ~7 mm) supported on ball bearings and SFDs for various design parameters of SFDs, including radial clearance, axial length, lubricant viscosity, and rotor imbalance conditions (i.e., amplitudes and phase angles) while increasing rotor speed up to 150 krpm. This study validates the predictive rotor finite element model against measurements of mass, polar and transverse moments of inertia, and free-free mode natural frequencies and mode shapes. A nonlinear rotordynamic model integrates nonlinear force coefficients of SFDs to calculate the transient responses of the TC rotor-bearing system. The predicted results show that SFD radial clearances, as well as phase angles of rotor imbalances, have the paramount effect on the dynamic responses of TC shaft motions.
