  • This study is an effort to develop computer simulation model that produce precipitation patterns from stochastic model. A stochastic model is formulated for the process of daily precipitation with considering the sequences of wet and dry days and the precipitation amounts on wet days. This study consists of 2 papers and the process of precipitation occurrence is modelled by an alternate renewal process (ARP) in paper (I). In the ARP model for the precipitation occurrence, four discrete distributions, used to fit the wet and dry spells, were as follows; truncated binomial distribution (TBD), truncated Poisson distribution (TPD), truncated negative binomial distribution (TNBD), logarithmic series distribution (LSD). In companion paper (II) the process of occurrence is developed by Markov chain. The amounts of precipitation, given that precipitation has occurred, are described by a Gamma. Pearson Type-III, Extremal Type-III, and 3 parameter Weibull distribution. Daily precipitation series model consists of two models, A-Wand A-G model, by combining the process of precipitation occurrence and a continuous probability distribution on the precipitation of wet days. To evaluate the performance of the simulation model, output from the model was compared with historical data of 7 stations in the Nakdong and Seomjin river basin. The results of paper (1) show that it is possible to design a model for the synthetic generation of IX)int precipitation patterns.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop computer simulation model that produce precipitation patterns from stochastic model. In the paper(I) of this study, the alternate renewal process(ARP) is used for the daily precipitation series. In this paper(Il), stochastic simulation models for the daily precipitation series are developed by combining Markov chain for the precipitation occurrence process and continuous probability distribution for the precipitation amounts on the wet days. The precipitation occurrence is determined by first order Markov chain with two states(dry and wet). The amounts of precipitation, given that precipitation has occurred, are described by a Gamma, Pearson Type-III, Extremal Type-III, and 3 parameter Weibull distribution. Since the daily precipitation series shows seasonal variation, models are identified for each month of the year separately. To illustrate the application of the simulation models, daily precipitation data were taken from records at the seven locations of the Nakdong and Seomjin river basin. Simulated data were similar to actual data in terms of distribution for wet and dry spells, seasonal variability, and precipitation amounts.

  • Biases embedded in numerical weather precipitation forecasts by the RDAPS model was determined, quantified and corrected. The ultimate objective is to eventually enhance the reliability of reservoir operation by Korean Water Resources Corporation (KOWACO), which is based on precipitation-driven forecasts of stream flow. Statistical post-processing, so called MOS (Model Output Statistics) was applied to RDAPS to improve their performance. The Artificial Neural Nwetwork (ANN) model was applied for 4 cases of 'Probability of Precipitation (PoP) for wet and dry season' and 'Quantitative Precipitation Forecasts (QPF) for wet and dry season'. The reduction on the large systematic bias was especially remarkable. The performance of both networks may be improved by retraining, probably every month. In addition, it is expected that performance of the networks will improve once atmospheric profile data are incorporated in the analysis. The key to the optimal performance of ANN is to have a large data set relevant to the predictand variable. The more complex the process to be modeled by the ANN, the larger the data set needs to be.

  • 10 m3/min (CMM) multi-pollutants abatement system was successfully developed by effectively integrating ozone oxidation, wet scrubbing, and wet electrostatic precipitation for the simultaneous removal of particulate matters (PMs) and NOx in a semiconductor fabrication process. The sophisticated control and optimization of operating parameters were conducted to maximize the destruction and removal efficiency of NOx. In particular, the stability test of a wet electrostatic precipitator was carried out in parallel for 30 days to validate the reliability of core parts including a power supply. An O3/NO ratio, which is the most important operating parameter, was optimized to be about 1.5 and the optimization of wet scrubbing with a reducing agent made it possible to analyze the contribution of neutralization reaction.

  • This paper describes the process of acidic precipitation from the atmosphere to the ground water, The net deposition of wet precipitation to the ground surface is obtained by subtracting the interception loss due to plant leaves and evaporation from the amount of total precipitation. As the water immerses through the vegetation and the different soil layers the various chemical reactions take place. The relationship between the acidic precipitation by increasing industrial emissions and the soil acidification mechanism is discussed. The report focuses on the buffering action that involves the proton budget in soil and rocks. Based on the soil constituents, the six buffer ranges of the soil are classified and each buffering process is illustrated. In addition, the Possibility of the contamination of drinking-water reservoirs by continuous acid burden is emphasized.

  • Wet-chemical process using ammonia to precipitate aluminum ion dissolved in a zirconia sol solution is examined. Formation of crystalline bayerite is unfavorable for fine dispersion of zirconia nanoparticles in alumina matrix after heat treatment. To avoid the bayerite formation, it was preferred to make a precipitation with a diluted ammonia or with an ammonia gas flow at high temperature. By optimizing the precipitation process and the calcination temperature, we successfully prepared the uniform microstructure in which tetragonal zirconia particles of ∼30nm is finely dispersed within the alumina grains.

  • The effluent limitations for individual industry based on the best available technology economically achievable (BAT) have been required to achieve effective regulation. BAT assessment criteria that are suitable for the circumstances of Korean industry were developed in the previous study. The criteria were applied to determine the BAT for leather tanning and finishing industry. For the evaluation BAT, a subcategorization for the industry considering wastewater characteristics, source equipments, raw material and so on should be suggested. Three subcategories: A) Unharing, Chrome Tan, Retan-Wet Finish, B) Chrome Tan, Retan-Wet Finish, and C) Furskins were proposed in this study. Wastewater discharged from the each category contains high concentration of COD, chrome, nitrogen and sulfide. In particular, the concentration of nitrogen from the subcategory A is significantly greater. Twenty sites were surveyed and wastewater qualities were analyzed. Therefore, six different technologies were applied to the subcategory A for the end-of-pipe treatment technology, and a technology was used in the subcategory B and C, respectively. The technology candidates were evaluated in terms of environmental impacts, economically achievability, treatment performance and economical reasonability. As the result, the technology options for each subcategories: A) primary chemical precipitation + modified Ludzack-Ettinger process (MLE) + secondary chemical precipitation, B) chemical precipitation + typical activated-sludge process + Fenton oxidation, C) chemical precipitation + typical activated-sludge process + batch Fenton oxidation or batch activated carbon treatment were selected as the BAT, respectively.

  • In this study, the variability of the Horton index which is ratio of vaporization and wetting water is investigated using a conceptual soil water balance model. From the proposed model, the steady-state soil water probabilistic density function is derived through meteorological and watershed characteristics and then the sensitivity of Horton index to the precipitation occurrence rate and the mean of wet day precipitation is examined. As a result, the inter-annual variability of the Horton index is lower than that of precipitation and they showed the strong negative correlation. It is also shown that although precipitation is not varied, the Horton index can be varied due to the fluctuation of the precipitation occurrence rate and the mean of wet day precipitation. In addition, it is presented that there is a non-linear relationship which has a critical point switching proportional or inverse relationship between the Horton index and two main characteristics of precipitation process.

  • It is desirable to establish reliable synthetic methods for electro-ceramic materials. To synthesize $SrTiO_3$ in this study direct solid state reactions and wet chemical processes were used. Previous study of $SrTiO_3$ synthesis included oxalated-method($SrTiO(C_2O_4)_2$.$4H_2O$) co-precipitation$(SrCO_3+TiO(OH)_2)$ and direct solid state reaction$(SrCO_3+TiO(OH)_2)$ The methods in question lead to intermediate inclusion during the reactions and less controllable in particle sizes of $SrTiO_3$. To obtain highly pure $SrTiO_3$ so-called "direct wet process method" was added in this investigation. In the study the "direct wet process" was for the first time applied to synthesize chemically pure and fine particle $SrTiO_3$. $SrCl_2$ and $TiCl_4$<\ulcornerTEX> at KOH solution at room temperature to 10$0^{\circ}C$ precipitated $SrTiO_3$ The particle size increased as temperature increased.mperature increased.
