  • By virtue of the characteristics inherent in diagrams, diagrammatic reasoning has potential and limitations that distinguish it from general thinking. It is natural that diagrams rarely appeared in Joseon mathematical books, which were heavily focused on computation and algebra in content, and preferred linguistic expressions in form. However, as the late Joseon Dynasty unfolded, there emerged a noticeable increase in the frequency of employing diagrams, due to the educational purposes to facilitate explanations and the influence of Western mathematics. Analyzing the role of diagrams included in Jo Taegu's 'JuseoGwangyeon', an exemplary book, this study includes discussions on the utilization of diagrams from the perspective of mathematics education, based on the findings of the analysis.

  • Zhu Shi Jie's Suan Xue Qi Meng is one of the most important books which gave a great influence to the development of Chosun Mathematics. Investigating San Hak Gye Mong Ju Hae(算學啓蒙註解) published in the middle of the 19th century, we study the development of Chosun Mathematics in the century. The author studied western mathematics together with theory of equations in Gu Il Jib (九一集) written by Hong Jung Ha(洪正夏) and then wrote the commentary, which built up a foundation on the development of Algebra of Chosun in the century.

  • Background/Aims: Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) has been established as a treatment modality for superficial esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Long-term follow-up data are lacking in Western countries. The aim of this study was to analyze long-term survival in a Western center. Methods: Patients undergoing ESD for ESCC were included. The analysis was performed retrospectively using a prospectively collected database. Results: R0 resection rate was 96.7% (59/61 lesions in 58 patients). Twenty-seven patients (46.6%) fulfilled the curative resection criteria (M1/M2) (group A), 11 patients (19.0%) had M3 lesions without lymphovascular invasion (LVI) (group B), and 20 patients (34.5%) had lesions with submucosal invasion or LVI (group C). Additional treatment was recommended after non-curative resection. It was not performed in 20/31 patients (64.5%), mainly because of comorbidities (75%). Twenty-nine out of 58 (50.0%) patients died during a mean follow-up of 3.7 years. Death was related to ESCC in 17.2% (5/29) of patients. The disease-specific survival rate after curative resection was 100%. Overall survival rates after 5 years were 61.5%, 63.6% and 28.1% for groups A, B, and C, respectively. The overall survival was significantly worse after non-curative resection (p=0.038). Conclusions: Non-curative resection is frequent after ESD for ESCC in Western patients. The long-term prognosis is limited and mainly determined by comorbidity. Early diagnosis and pre-interventional assessments need to be improved.

  • The purpose of the study was to suggest a few fundamental ideas to secondary mathematics teachers regarding using LOGO in their classrooms. Even though this software is "classic" in mathematics lessons in the States and western countries, Korean secondary mathematics teachers did not have much opportunities to become familiar with this software and its applications in their classrooms. This article offered a few suggestions with the specific guidelines. Basic commands were also listed for those who are not familiar with this software. Since the current Korean educational curriculum do not allow to use LOGO in regular classrooms as substitute lessons, it is recommended to implement these ideas in extra curriculum lessons or "Math Club" as trial basis.

  • This study investigates a mathematical subject, 'triangles' in mathematics books of Chosun Dynasty, in special Muk Sa Jib San Bub(默思集算法), Gu Il Jib(九一集), San Hak Ib Mun(算學入門), Ju Hae Su Yong(籌解需用), and San Sul Gwan Gyun(算術管見). It is likely that they apt to avoid manipulating general triangles except the right triangles and the isosceles triangles etc. Our investigation says that the progress of triangle-related contents in Chosun mathematics can fall into three stages: measurement of the triangle-shaped fields, transition from the object of measurement to the object of geometrical study, and examination of definition, properties and validation influenced by western mathematics.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of treatment between Western medicine and Korean medicine on Allergic rhinitis patients using national population-based claim data from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service. Methods : The subjects of the study were 30,024 patients in the Korean medicine group and 30,024 in the Western medicine group who were diagnosed with Allergic rhinitis from September 1, 2018 to December 31, 2018. Propensity score analysis was used for matching age, sex, etc. at a ratio of 1:1. Cox regression and subgroup analysis were used to estimate the adjusted hazard ratio of recurrence, Asthma, and Atopic dermatitis in Korean medicine group and Western medicine group. In addition, the total treatment period, total treatment cost, and average cost per day of visit were compared and analyzed. Results : Compared to Korean medicine, Western medicine had a significantly higher risk of recurrence at 1.701 times, Asthma occurrence risk at 1.609 times and Atopic dermatitis occurrence risk at 1.098 times. Compared to Western medicine, the total treatment period of Korean medicine was 14.27 days longer, the total treatment cost was 53,591 won more, and the average cost per day was 7,539 won more. Conclusions : This study is a retrospective cohort study using the propensity score matching in Korea to compare the outcomes of Allergic rhinitis between Western medicine and Korean medicine. Further research is needed by considering patients characteristics, and linking with additional data.

  • Since modern mathematics textbooks were introduced in the late 19th century Korea, arithmetic experts started to teach modern mathematics using Arabic numerals at village schools and churches. After the Gabo Education Reform of 1894, western mathematics education was included in public education and the mathematics textbooks began to be officially published. We explored most of Korean mathematics textbooks from 1895 to 2016 including the changes of mathematics curriculum through 1885-1905, 1905-1910, 1911-1945, 1945-1948, 1948-1953, 1954-1999, and 2000-2016. This study presents the characters of modern mathematics textbooks of Korea since 1885.

  • We investigate the Gou Gu Shu(句股術) in Hong Jung Ha's Gu Il Jib(九一集) and Cho Tae Gu's Ju Su Gwan Gyun(籌書管見) published in the early 18th century. Using a structural approach and Tien Yuan Shu(天元術), Hong has obtained the most advanced results on the subject in Asia. Using Cho's result influenced by the western mathematics introduced in the middle of the 17th century, we study a process of a theoretical approach in Chosun mathematics in the period.

  • This study aims to investigate the evolution of calculating the volume of a sphere in eastern and western mathematical history. In western case, Archimedes', Cavalieri's and Kepler's approaches, and in eastern case, Nine Chapters';, Liu Hui's and Zus' approaches are worthy of noting. The common idea of most of these approaches is the infinitesimal concept corresponding to Cavalieri's or Liu-Zu's principle which would developed to the basic idea of Calculus. So this study proposes an alternative to organization of math-textbooks or instructional procedures for teaching the volume of a sphere based on the principle.
