Dnd (dead end) gene encodes an RNA binding protein and is specifically expressed in primordial germ cells (PGCs) as a vertebrate-specific component of the germ plasma throughout embryogenesis. By utilizing a technique of specific nucleic acids associated with proteins (SNAAP), 13 potential target mRNAs of zebrafish Dnd (ZDnd) protein were identified from 8-cell embryo, and 8 target mRNAs have been confirmed using an RT-PCR analysis. Of the target mRNAs, the present study is focused on the regulation of geminin, which is an inhibitor of DNA replication. Using electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA), we demonstrated that ZDND protein bound the 67-nucleotide region from 864 to 931 in the 3'UTR of geminin mRNA, a sequence containing 60.29% of uridine. Results from a dual-luciferase assay in HEK293 cells showed that ZDND increases the translation of geminin. Taken together, the identification of target mRNA for ZDnd will be helpful to further explore the biological function of Dnd in zebrafish germ-line development as well as in cancer cells.

The sicence of ecology was introduced into Korea as a part of biology translated into Chinese or Korean from western biology textbooks imported by way of China or directly from the West at the end of 19th c. to the beginning of 20th c. After the Japanese annexation of Korea in 1910, Japanese technologists had studied applied ecology to exploit the natural resources of Korea. Reforestation, begetation eclogy, riparian vegetation, etc. were investigated by workers from the West. Such ecological researches, however, did not contribute to the introduction of ecology into Korea, and the anture of the Korean peninsula was utilized by foreign ecologists as ecological research sites. Several Korean ecologists, not many, worked actively at the end of Japanese rule, and contributed to the settlement ecology in Korea since 1945.

Objective: This study used cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to compare the characteristics of left ventricular remodeling in patients with primary aldosteronism (PA) with those of patients with essential hypertension (EH) and healthy controls (HCs). Materials and Methods: This prospective study enrolled 35 patients with PA, in addition to 35 age- and sex-matched patients with EH, and 35 age- and sex-matched HCs, all of whom underwent comprehensive clinical and cardiac MRI examinations. The analysis of variance was used to detect the differences in the characteristics of left ventricular remodeling among the three groups. Univariable and multivariable linear regression analyses were used to determine the relationships between left ventricular remodeling and the physiological variables. Results: The left ventricular end-diastolic volume index (EDVi) (mean ± standard deviation [SD]: 85.1 ± 13.0 mL/m² for PA, 75.9 ± 14.3 mL/m² for EH, and 77.3 ± 12.8 mL/m² for HC; p = 0.010), left ventricular end-systolic volume index (ESVi) (mean ± SD: 35.2 ± 9.8 mL/m² for PA, 30.7 ± 8.1 mL/m² for EH, and 29.5 ± 7.0 mL/m² for HC; p = 0.013), left ventricular mass index (mean ± SD: 65.8 ± 16.5 g/m² for PA, 56.9 ± 12.1 g/m² for EH, and 44.1 ± 8.9 g/m² for HC; p < 0.001), and native T1 (mean ± SD: 1224 ± 39 ms for PA, 1201 ± 47 ms for EH, and 1200 ± 44 ms for HC; p = 0.041) values were higher in the PA group compared to the EH and HC groups. Multivariable linear regression demonstrated that log (plasma aldosterone-to-renin ratio) was independently correlated with EDVi and ESVi. Plasma aldosterone was independently correlated with native T1. Conclusion: Patients with PA showed a greater degree of ventricular hypertrophy and enlargement, as well as myocardial fibrosis, compared to those with EH. Cardiac MRI T1 mapping can detect left ventricular myocardial fibrosis in patients with PA.

The gravity measurement has been conducted at 69 points with an interval of about 1km along the national road between Masan and Busan through Kimhae to study on the subsurface geology and structure of Kyongsang basin. The Bouguer gravity anomalies were obtained from the observed gravity values, and interpreted by means of the Fourier-series method and Talwani method for 2-dimensional body. The depth of Conrad discontinuity is about 14.8km at the west end of survey line, and increases smoothly to about 13.6km at the east end. But it is uplifted by about 500m between Yangsan and Dongnae faults. The depth of the basement of Kyongsang basin is about 4.8km at the west end. It decreases gradually passing Masan, and reaches the maximum depth of 5.6km at the 15km east of Masan. Hereafter, it starts to increase to 4.3km at the east end. It is also uplifted by about 500m between Yangsan and Dongnae faults. The Bulgugsa granites which cause two low Bouguer gravity anomaly zones are distributed in the vicinity of Masan at depth of about 3.5km and Kimhae area at depth of about 5.3km. Diorite, granodiorite, aplite, and felsite are distributed with various depth of about 1~1.7km, and Jusasan andesitic rocks, except porphyritic one located at the west of Kimhae, are distributed with depth of about 1km. Three fracture zones associated with faults are located at the places where v-shaped Bouguer gravity anomalies are appeared.

A 75-year-old female presented with subarachnoid hemorrhage. Angiography revealed a partial duplication (fenestration) in the proximal $A_1$ segment and a ruptured aneurysm at the distal end of $A_1$ fenestration. This congenital anomaly accompanying an aneurysm was associated with duplicated ipsilateral middle cerebral artery (MCA). Congenital defect of the arterial wall and hemodynamic factors at the fenestrated $A_1$ are considered to play a significant role in the development of this aneurysm. The present case is peculiar because not only the ruptured $A_1$ aneurysm was related with the anterior and middle cerebral artery duplication but also the location of $A_1$ fenestration and the origin of $A_1$ aneurysm in a fenestration are quite unusual.

Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer mortality and overall treatment outcomes for lung cancer are still to be considered disappointing despite of development of new medical therapeutics on cancer. Cytostatic agents are considered as novel medication in the treatment of cancer though its benefit is most appropriately assessed through survival end points rather than the objective-response end points. We present a case of a lung adenocarcinoma patient who showed tumor lesion in patient's two different lung sites. From the day of diagnosis, the tumor lesion stayed with the almost same size with more than 1 year of Allergen-Removed Rhus Verniciflua Stokes (A-RVS) based Traditional Korean Medicine treatment without any western conventional treatment. No significant side effect was noted and the patient maintained good performance status throughout the treatment period. We assume A-RVS may have cytostatic effect on NSCLC patient and our observation justifies further investigation.

This study explored measures to reduce noise applicable to Gimhae international airport centering on densely packed housing areas. Especially, as for measures to relieve noise damage on the densely packed housing areas in Gimhae-si, the noise reduction effect is expected to be doubled if the west runway (36L/18R) is used as the preferred runway for the 36 direction takeoff, as well as if the flight bypasses the densely packed housing areas by means of sophisticated navigation using the area navigation (RNAV) procedure based on performance-based navigation (PBN). Takeoff toward the south connects the flight path to the South Sea which has comparatively low noise impact, relieving noise damage on the densely packed housing areas (apartment complexes in Naeoe-dong of Gimhae-si, etc.) near the northern end of the runway. The operation of the runway displaced threshold is currently being implemented on the west runway (36L/18R) of Gimhae international airport. It has been found that swing landing in spring and summer when the wind blows from the south has a noise reduction effect on the noise sensitive areas at the side and end of the west runway (Gangdong-dong and Jukdong-dong of Gangseo-gu and Buram-dong of Gimhae-si, etc.).

This study is to analyze the 2012 spring drought of Korea using drought index and satellite image. The severe spring drought recorded in May of 2012 showed 36.4% of normal rainfall(99.5mm). The areas of west part of Gyeonggi-do and Chungcheong-do were particularly serious. The drought indices both the SPI(Standardized Precipitation Index) and WADI(WAter supply Drought Index) represented the drought areas from the end of May and to the severe drought at the end of June. The drought by SPI completely ended at the middle of July, but the drought by WADI continued severe drought in the agricultural reservoir watersheds of whole country even to the end of the July. On the other hand, the results by spatial NDVI(Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) and EVI(Enhanced Vegetation Index) data from Terra MODIS, both indices showed relatively low values around the areas of Sinuiju, Pyongyang, and west coast of North Korea and Gyeonggi-do and Chungcheong-do of South Korea indicating drought condition. Especially, the values of NDVI and EVI at Chungcheong-do were critically low in June compared to the normal year value.

What is the fundamental cause of the broader gap between East and West medicine? This is a very long story that began in the late Renaissance and still continues today. Why it took so long time from the end of the XIIth century when acupuncture was firt imported to Europe to XX century when it was finally settled in France? We present three cases which caused the delayed establishment : A "blisters" article from Diderot and D'Alembert in the eighteenth century, the practice of acupuncture by Dr. Berlioz in Paris in early 19th century, and the reception of the works of Georges Soulie de Morant in France in the 1930's. We attempt to show the misunderstanding that has always prevailed between the East and West medicines because of different viewpoint : the West has not understood the richness and subtlety of the approach of East asian thought and wanted to "align" the Asian medical modality to west medicine with inappropriate and insufficient "experiments" without enough explanation of the principles and philosophical backgrounds. It was not the matter of technology but the mutual incomprehension of history and culture.

Objective: This case report details the successful management of bowel perforation through traditional Korean medicine. Often, emergency surgery is required due to potential complications, such as peritonitis. In this case, the patient had previously undergone a total colectomy, making surgical treatment complicated. Methods: The patient revealed persistent abdominal pain and over 20 instances of diarrhea per day. During the course of treatment, which included two hospitalizations and one outpatient visit, acupuncture treatment and herbal medicine were administered. Throughout the treatment period, the intensity of abdominal pain and the frequency of diarrhea gradually decreased. Results: At the end of treatment, a follow-up abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan showed no evidence of perforation. Additionally, blood tests revealed no abnormalities in liver or kidney function, confirming the safety of the treatments.
