The Fish Fauna of the Kokunsan Island, Korea (고군산군도 연안 어류상)

  • During the investigation of fish fauna from the Kokunsan Islands off west coast of Korea from 1989 to 1993, authors confirmed 102 fish species belonging to 81 genera, 50 families and 12 orders. Of these the following 8 species were common : Herengila zunasi, Engraulis japonica, Johnius grypotus, Pholis fangi, Repomucenus ornatipinnis, Chasmichthys gulosus, Tridentiger trigonocephalus, and Cynoglossus joyneri. Of the twelve orders recognized herein, Perciformes, Scorpaeniformes and Pleuronectiformes include approximately 74% of the fish fauna in this area. The largest family is the Gobiidae representing 12 species. Pholis fangi, Repomucenus ornatipinnis, Repomucenus koreanus, Takifugu flavidus and Takifugu obscurus collected are endemic to the Yellow Sea. Fifteen specimens of an unknown Sebastes species was collected. This species resembles Sebastes hubbsi and Sebastes longispinnis, but the species differs from other sebastes species reported in Korea in the number of dorsal fin rays, lateral line pores, gill rakers and in color patterns of body sides.

The Synoptic Meteorological Characteristics of Spring Rainfall in South Korea during 2008~2012 (최근 5년(2008~2012) 간 우리나라에 내린 봄비의 종관기상학적 특성)

  • Spring rainfall events were comprehensively analyzed based on the distribution of precipitation amount and the related synoptic weather between 2008~2012. Forty-eight cases are selected among the rain events of the entire country, and each distribution of the 24-hour accumulated precipitation amount is classified into three types: evenly distributed rain(Type 1), more rain in the southern area and south coast region (Type 2), and more rain in the central region (Type 3), respectively. Type 1 constitutes the largest part(35 cases, 72.9%) with mean precipitation amount of 19.4 mm, and the 17 cases of Type 1 are observed in March. Although Type B and C constitutes small parts (11 cases, 22.9% and 2 cases, 4.2%), respectively. The precipitation amount of these types is greater than 34.5 mm and occurred usually in April. The main synoptic weather patterns affecting precipitation distribution are classified into five patterns according to the pathway of low pressures. The most influential pattern is type 4, and this usually occurs in March, April, and May (Low pressures from the north and the ones from the west and south consecutively affect South Korea, 37.5%). The pattern 3(Low pressures from the south affect South Korea, 25%) happens mostly in April, and the average precipitation is usually greater than 30 mm. This value is relatively higher than the values in any other patterns.

Herbicidal Activity of New Rice Herbicide Pyrimisulfan+Mefenacet SC against Sulfonlurea-Resistant Sea Club Rush (Scirpus planiculmis) (설포닐우레아계 제초제 저항성 새섬매자기에 대한 신규 제초제 Pyrimisulfan+Mefenacet SC의 약제방제 효과)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the herbicidal activity against Scirpus planiculmis (SCPPL) which has been reported as resistant biotype on sulfonylurea (SU) herbicides at the west coast reclaimed area first and proliferated continuously at Hwasung and Pyeongtaek in Gyeonggi province, and some Chungnam province. In order to investigate resistance breakability against SCPPL, new rice herbicides containing tefuryltrione [p-hydrophenyl pyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) inhibitor], pyrimisulfan and triafamone[actolactate synthethase (ALS) inhibitor] were tested. In both lab and field experiments, tefuryltrione GR, 4-HPPD inhibitor showed growth retardation with a bleaching on the young leaves of SCPPL at early time after treatment. However, it restored and regerminated with insufficient control effect. On the other hand, pyrimisulfan+mefenacet SC, triafamone+tefuryltrione GR, and ALS inhibitor showed excellent control effect on SU-resistant SCPPL with growth retardation and necrosis. In particular, pyrimisulfan+mefenacet SC showed excellent controlling effect on SU-resistant SCPPL in regional field experiments.

Identifications of Source Locations for Atmospheric Total Gaseous Mercury Using Hybrid Receptor Models (Hybrid receptor model을 이용한 대기 중 총 가스상 수은의 오염원 위치 추정 연구)

  • The objectives of this study were to measure ambient total gaseous mercury (TGM) concentrations in Seoul, to analyze the characteristics of TGM concentration, and to identify of possible source areas for TGM using back-trajectory based hybrid receptor models like PSCF (Potential Source Contribution Function) and RTWC (Residence Time Weighted Concentration). Ambient TGM concentrations were measured at the roof of Graduate School of Public Health building in Seoul for a period of January to October 2004. Average TGM concentration was $3.43{\pm}1.17\;ng/m^3$. TGM had no notable pattern according to season and meteorological phenomena such as rainfall, Asian dust, relative humidity and so on. Hybrid receptor models incorporating backward trajectories including potential source contribution function (PSCF) and residence time weighted concentration (RTWC) were performed to identify source areas of TGM. Before hybrid receptor models were applied for TGM, we analysed sensitivities of starting height for HYSPLIT model and critical value for PSCF. According to result of sensitivity analysis, trajectories were calculated an arrival height of 1000 m was used at the receptor location and PSCF was applied using average concentration as criterion value for TGM. Using PSCF and RTWC, central and eastern Chinese industrial areas and the west coast of Korea were determined as important source areas. Statistical analysis between TGM and GEIA grided emission bolsters the evidence that these models could be effective tools to identify possible source area and source contribution.

A Unity-based Simulator for Tsunami Evacuation with DEVS Agent Model and Cellular Automata (DEVS 에이전트 모델과 셀 오토마타를 사용한 유니티엔진 기반의 지진해일 대피 시뮬레이터 개발)

  • Tsunami is a frightful natural disaster that causes severe damages worldwide. To minimize the damage, South Korea has built a tsunami warning system and designated evacuation sites in the east and south coasts. However, such countermeasures have not been verified whether they are adequate to minimize casualties since tsunami rarely occurs in South Korea. Recently, due to increasing earthquakes in the west coast of Japan, the likelihood of South Korea entering the damage area of tsunami rises; thus, in this paper, we develops a simulator based on Unity game engine to simulate the evacuation from tsunami. In order to increase the fidelity of the simulation results, the simulator applies a tsunami simulation model that analyzes coastal inundation based on cellular automata. In addition, the objects included in tsunami evacuation, such as humans, are modeled as an agent model that determines the situation and acts itself, based on the discrete-event system specification (DEVS), a mathematical formalism for describing a discrete event system. The tsunami simulation model and agent models are integrated and visualized in the simulator using Unity game engine. As an example of the use of this simulator, we verify the existing tsunami evacuation site in Gwangalli Beach in Busan and suggest the optimal alternative site minimizing casualties.

  • 충청남도 서해안은 생태환경의 보고로서 갯벌, 사구, 해안습지 등 독특한 자연적 특성을 갖고 있는 지역이다. 그러나 다른 지역에 비해 대규모 간척 및 매립으로 인한 해양생태계 피해에 현저히 노출되어 있고, 최근 산업화 및 관광권화가 진행되고 있으며 해안선 침식 방지를 위한 연안정비사업으로 각종 연안 방호구조물이 건설되었다. 이 중 가장 많이 건설된 연안 호안구조물은 배후지역의 안정성 확보, 해안도로의 건설 등 다양한 목적으로 축조되었다. 그러나 성장위주의 경제정책으로 연안 호안구조물이 무분별하게 설치되어 파도와 호안 구조물의 접촉 시 호안구조물이 파랑을 견디지 못해 사면피복재가 산란되어 외관상 주변 환경을 해칠 뿐만아니라 2차 피해까지 야기 시킬 우려가 있다. 본 연구에서는 호안구조물의 리모델링을 통해 안정성을 증대시키기 위해 서해 연안지역의 4개 시 군 29개 지점을 대상으로 호안구조물 현황에 대해 조사하고 호안구조물의 리모델링을 통해 붕괴된 지역을 대상으로 파랑에 대해 안정한 사석재 소요질량을 호안구조물의 경사 별로 산정하여 비교하였다. 피복재 소요질량 산정을 위한 설계파고는 유의파고를 적용하였으며, 산정공식은 허드슨공식(Hudson, 1959)을 사용하였다. 추가적으로 사석 층의 두께와 단위면적당 수용해야할 사석재의 개수를 산정하여 호안구조물 설계 시 사석재의 배치를 용이하게 할 수 있도록 하였다. 본 연구에서 산정된 값들은 초기설계로서 파랑에 안정한 호안구조물의 설계 조건 중 일부분으로 호안구조물의 최종 설계 시 조파실험을 통하여 안정성을 검증 해야 할 것으로 판단된다.

Electron Microscopic Observation on the Decay of the Waterlogged Woods Excavated from Higokri, Pyungtaek (평택 희곡리 출토목재 부후형태의 전자현미경적 관찰)

  • This study was conducted to examineboth the type of wood decay and the degree of degradation for the waterlogged woods (Alnus spp. and Fraxinus spp., about 5,700~5,900 year old), which were excavated at Higokri, Pyungteak in the west-coastal region of Korea. The transmission electron microscope (TEM) observation indicated the degradations by soft rot and bacteria were common in both woods. Erosion bacteria attacked gradually and irregularly from the secondary layer to compound middle lamella and often produced the cavity which was similar to soft-rot cavity but much smaller ones. Tunneling bacteria decomposed mainly $S_2$ layer. Though of highly degraded walls, the cells almost kept the original form with intact lignin-rich middle lamella, which were saturated by water. No marine borer's trace indicated that the sealine rise in the western coast of Korean peninsula during the climate optimum period in the holocene might not be high enough to submerge the Higokri area which locates about 2 km from the present sealine.

Anisakis Infection Relationship between finless porpoises, Neophocaena asiaeorientalis and Cephalopod in Korean Waters (두족류에 의한 상괭이의 아니사키스 감염)

  • Finless porpoise is the one of porpoises in Korean waters that frequently observed in the coastal area. This study reported parasite infection cases of stranded finless porpoise, Neophocaena asiaeorientalis which was stranded on the Saemangeum Dyke on the west coast of Korea 21 May, 2012. The finless porpoise was male, and estimated at 8 years old. Parasites were found in abdominal cavity, skull and lung. The parasites were identified as nematode, trematoda and lungworm. Nematoda in abdominal cavity was Crassicauda sp. Trematoda found in the skull was indentified Nasitrema sp. Lungworm in lung seemed one of genus Pseudaliids. Anisakis spp. has not been found.

An Electrical Resistivity Monitoring in Embankment (제방에서의 전기비저항 모니터링)

  • An electrical resistivity survey is widely conducted for the safety management of embankment. In this study we investigated how a tidal variation affects the interpretation of electrical resistivity monitoring data of the embankment located in west coast. We monitored the variation of electrical resistivity on the coastal embankment where there was a high tidal variation for 3 days in every 3 hours. Electrical resistivity monitoring data showed a variation of resistivity distribution in specific area according to the time, which demonstrated some correlation with a tidal height variation. Therefore, we highly recommend that a tidal effect be considered when electrical resistivity survey is conducted on the embankment where there is a high tidal variation. For further study, we need a long term electrical resistivity monitoring and analyzing on tidal variation.

A Note on Water Masses and General Circulation in the Yellow Sea (Hwanghae) (黃海水 와 循環에 관한 考察)

  • Water masses and circulation in the yellow Sea (Hwanghae) were briefly reviewed and synthesized. Water masses were classified into four types: Hwanghae Cold Water, Hwanghae Warm Current Water, Coastal Waters and Changjiang River Diluted Water. The Hwanghae Cold Water can be defined to have a salinity of 32.0∼33.0% and a temperature below 10$^{\circ}C$, based on long-term hydrographic data and recent CTD casts (KORI, 1984). Concerning circulation, there exists a cyclonic gyre throughout the year in the southern part. In winter, the coastal current along the Chinese coast is very strong due to northerly or northwesterly winds and the Hwanghae Warm Current becomes weak as can be expected from a surface to bottom thermohaline front west of Cheju-do. Meanwhile in summer, the Changjiang River Diluted Water flows northeastward toward Cheju-do and the coastal current in the western part is greatly reduced. The northward current during summer in the southeastern Hwanghae has been accepted to be the Hwanghae Warm Current until now, coastal waters and the Hwanghae Cold Water in the central deep area, not a continuation of the Hwanghae Warm Current.
