  • In construction of buildings in Korea, the buildings are frequently founded on the weathered ground (weathered soil/rock, fractured rock). In this case, to make a full use of a bearing capacity of a weathered ground for economic design, the shallow mat foundation system could be used. In this study, we have researched three cases of mat foundations on the weathered ground in Korea, and analyzed and considered the design procedures and the reinforcing methods. That is, we have considered the detail design, analysis proceedings, the ground settlement evaluation proceedings, the rock face mapping evaluations after excavation and reinforcing methods of the mat foundation on the weathered ground. And large scale plate load tests on the weathered ground supporting the mat foundation were performed and also load bearing capacity and settlement of actual mat foundation, considering the scale effect, were evaluated.

  • When judging the ground by core-logging, depth of coring might be stopped by coming into view of the moderately weathered rock and also considered as bedrock line. However, highly weathered rock may appear again, if coring more, because there are core-stones in the residual soil and highly weathered rock by the effect of hydraulic-thermal differentiation and does the irregular rock weathering or metamorphic rock region. Therefore, there are room for misunderstanding of diagnosing the moderately weathered rock. Even though the irregular ground where the corestones were come out will show clear geotechnical differences between the ground and the gradually weathered bedrock, nowadays, the construction sites do not take into account the characteristic of core-stone region. In conclusion, to study the failure-strength characteristics of soil layers containing core-stones, we made artificial core-stones and varied percentage of corestones, and measured cohesion and friction factors to adjust them to construction sites containing corestones such as slope, tunnel, and underground.

  • It is very important for successful construction to estimate the soil volume conversion factor of domestic weathered ground accurately and reasonably. However, it is very difficult to quantify the weathering degree of weathered ground at the field, so that the soil volume conversion factor used in Korea is often dependent upon the standard of foreign countries. Besides, the soil volume conversion factor of domestic weathered ground has been rarely studied and the use and accuracy of the soil volume conversion factor have been questioned persistingly. This study suggests a simple but robust method for estimating the soil volume conversion factor and measuring the weathering degree reasonably, and attempts to establish the utilization of a soil volume conversion factor measurement system based on experimental and analytical results. We made relationship between electrical resistivity and weathering degree presented from weathering index obtained through laboratory tests using field samples, and an estimation method of in-situ weathering degree for granites and a calculation method of soil volume conversion factor using electrical resistivity. And also, we suggested the photogrametry measurement-equipment system for measuring the volume of cargo box and the application plan of stand equipment and RFID for calculating the earth volume and distinguishing buggies in order to design the measurement system for soil volume conversion factor applicable to the field. Ultimately, the Weathered Earth-work Management Program (WEMP) was developed, so field managers may easily obtain the information about earth volume and soil volume conversion factor at the weathered ground.

  • The behaviour of ground movement during the construction of two parallel tunnels in weathered zone and soft rock has been investigated. All the influencing factors for the behaviour of twin tunnel such as tunnel size, ground conditions, tunnel depth, pillar width and initial state of ground stresses were examined The results of FEM nonlinear analysis were compared with some of model test results in weathered zone to verify the numerical method. It was found that minimum interference was obtained in the parallel construction case when the twin tunnel distance (pillar width) is just over the twice of tunnel diameter. Guide line for the interference of twin tunnelling has been introduced for the ground of weathered zone and soft rock.

  • In this study, applicability of PMT in domestic area and test procedure were studied. At six test holes of three construction sites in Pusan, PMT using Elastometer-200 type was done. The problems during test were investigated and the test results were analysed. Limit pressure, p$\sub$ι/ could be determined by p- Δv/v method. Using PMT results, marine soil in Pusan could be classified approximately. Net limit pressure value was in the range of 6.4 ∼ 22.5 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ in clay, 2.2 ∼ 30.0 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ in sand, 13.0 ∼ 58.0 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ in weathered soil and 47.0 ∼ 190.0 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ in weathered rock. Also, E$\sub$m//p$\sub$ι/ value was in the range of 2.4 ∼ 7.0 in clay, 2.6 ∼ 12.1 in sand, 6.8 ∼ 17.1 in weathered soil and 7.2 ∼ 29.6 in weathered rock.

  • Fluid Confirmation Tests(FCT) on 1500 ground Anchors install in weathered rock were carried out to investigate upper and lower limit of elastic elongation, frictional resistant of fixed anchor body, mobilized angle between anchor body and soil. All the measured data were analysed and compared with theoretical equations. The frictional angles of diaphragm wall and anchorage system in weathered rock showed nonlinear curve between upper and lower limit of standard elongation. The FCT results indicated that the frictional resistant angles increased with higher values of surcharge load. The quality assurance on the fixed anchor location was investigated by means of measuring elastic elongation during the FCT, and comparing these with theoretical design length, the quality of anchors in this particular site found to be above average standard. The results of this research works with provide valuable guide line on quality assurance of anchors system as well as resonable prediction of friction resistance between the fixed anchor body and the weathered rock.

  • In general, geothermal energy pile and horizontal ground heat exchangers are installed in shallower depths than conventional vertical ground coupled heat pumps. Consequently their heat exchange performance is strongly governed by thermal conductivity of soil layer. Previous studies have shown that the thermal conductivity of soil above ground water table significantly affects the heat exchange rate because of partially saturated condition in soil and consequent variation of soil thermal conductivity. This paper presents a study result on the prediction of thermal conductivity of weathered granite soils. For weathered granite soils sampled from 5 locations, thermal conductivity tests were conducted with varying porosity and degree of saturation. The existing thermal conductivity models in literatures appeared inappropriate to the weathered granite soils. Hence, an empirical equation was proposed in this paper and its validity was examined by applying it to thermal conductivity test results obtained for weathered granite soils in this study and from literatures.

  • More than sixty percentages of tunnels in the second phase of Seoul subway project have the ground coverages less than twenty meters. Majority of ground conditions encountered during turutel ling, therefore, are weathered rocks or weathered scils. Substantial lengths of tunnels are being constructed and designed running through the alluvial deposits as well. A comprehensive evaluation of current design and construction technology of Seoul subway tunnels is made with four categories such as site investigations, design concepts and methods, auxiliary measures and quality controls. Critical comments are given and some suggestions for the improvement of technology are presented.

  • This study analyzed ground settlement and ground stress depending on tunnel excavation and the ground reinforcing grouting methods for double line road tunnel through deep weathered zone. Diameter of double line road tunnel was approximately 12m and umbrella arch method and side wall reinforcing grouting were applied. The ring-cut split excavation method and CD-cut excavation method for excavation method were applied. Analysis of failure rate and vertical stress ratio show that the tunnel for which the height of the cover(H) was higher than four times the diameter, it can be considered a deep tunnel. Comparisons of various excavation and ground reinforcement methods were showed that CD-cut method results in lower surface and crown settlement, and lower failure rate than where using Ring-cut split method. In addition the side wall reinforcing grouting resulted in reduction of tunnel displacement and settlement.

  • The general ground conditions in Korea are distributed in order of fill, deposit soil, weathered soil, weathered rock, soft rock. The fill soil and deposit soil located at the top have relatively low strength compared to the lower layer, and they are sometimes classified as soft ground according to the standard penetration test results. In this study, the PF method, a ground improvement method, was applied to the soft layer, a large plate load test was conducted on the improved ground, and the results were reviewed.
