  • In the M&S filed, The Battle Lab is available for acquisition, design, development tool, validation test, and training in the weapon system of development process. Recently, the Battle Lab in the military of Korea is still in an early stage, in spite of importance of battle lab construction. In the environment of network centric warfare, a practical use of the M&S which is connecting live, virtual and constructive model can be applied to all field of System Engineering process. It is necessary thar the Battle Lab is not restricted by time and space, and is possible for the technical implementation. In this paper, to guarantee the interoperability of live and virtual simulation, virtual simulators connect live simulators by using the tactical data link. To guarantee the interoperability of virtual and constructive simulation, both virtual simulators and constructive simulators use the RTI which is the standard tool of M&S. We propose the System that constructed the Air Defence Battle Lab. In case of the approach of target tracks, The Air Defence Battle Lab is the system for the engagement based on a command of an upper system in the engagement weapon system. Constructive simulators which are target track, missile, radar, and launcher simulator connect virtual simulators which are MCRC, battalion, and fire control center simulators using the RPR-FOM 1.0 that is a kind of RTI FOM. The interoperability of virtual simulators and live simulators can be guaranteed by the connection of the tactical data links which are Link-11B and ATDL-1.

  • The ROK Army is promoting cutting-edge, future-oriented military development such as a mobile, intelligent, and hyper-connected Army TIGER system. The future infantry brigade plans to increase mobility with squad-level tactical vehicles to enable combat in multi-domain operations and to deploy various weapon systems such as surveillance and reconnaissance drones. In addition, it will be developed into an intelligent unit that transmits and receives data collected through the weapon system through a hyper-connected network. Accordingly, the future infantry brigade will transmit and receive more data. However, the Army's tactical information communication system has limitations in operating as a tactical communication system for future units, such as low transmission speed and bandwidth and restrictions on communication support. Therefore, in this paper, the information distribution capability of the future infantry brigade is presented through the offensive operation scenario and M&S.

  • The tactical data-link is useful to exchanging automatic information and controling command in combat environment. This is a essential factor of interoperability in the future combat situation of network centric warfare. In a aspect of a weapon system development, Modeling & Simulation can save expense. HLA RTI is a standard communication protocol in M&S. So, we suggest that Link Simulator connect tactical data-link through RTI. This simulator has the interoperability between M&S and tactical data-link, the reusability through adabing M&S framework, and the wide usability by automatic engagement function.

  • To overcome limitations of test scope, schedule and cost, M&S(Modeling & Simulation) technique has been applied for T&E(Test and Evaluation) of the state-of-art weapon systems. This paper proposes an air defense simulation software framework to reduce both redundancy an[1 programming errors in system simulator. The proposed framework consists of a 'model' and a 'middleware' The 'middleware' is a reliable communication service layer that supports not only HLA(High Level Architecture) which is an international standard in M&S but also TCP/IP, UDP and etc. The main role of 'model' is to schedule and to run the real-time distributed simulation. The proposed framework has been applied to M-SAM(Middle range Surface to Air Missile) system simulator. The proposed framework's scheduling and communication performance results are satisfactory and were measured by hardwired NTP(Network Timer Protocol) time-stamp with GPS(Global Positioning System) timer for better precision.

  • This study analyzes the correlation between the accracy of rifle and the result of engagement. And estimates the improvement cost of the rifle accordingly. For this experiment, an engagement class simulation model(AWAM: Army Weapon Effectiveness Analysis Model) was used. We also selected the rifle, which is a portable weapon for the experiment. Prior to this experiment, we conducted a reliability test(VV&A: Verification, Validation and Accreditation) on the model. The VV&A process is mainly done during the development of the DM&S model, which is also necessary for the operation of the M&S. We confirmed the need for VV&A during the experiment and obtained reliable experimental results using the corrected values. In the Accuracy Experiment we found that the 20% improvement is the most effective. And we were able to estimate the cost of acquiring a rifle with a 20% higher accuracy. The cost was estimated by simple regression analysis based on the price of the current rifle. Through this study, we could know the impact of the accuracy of rifle on the experimental results and estimate the cost of improved rifle.

  • Korean defense specifications are the technical criteria of military products and major factor of acquisition system. Weapon systems and acquisition technique have been advanced dramatically after 1990's, but Korean defense specification practice standard has stayed after early 1980's except embedded software. The current status of current Korean defense specification practice standard and trend of related design and acquisition techniques like M&S, SBA, and digital manufacturing have been reviewed. This paper suggests that transfer to product, IT oriented specification structure, adaptation of digital product model and reinforcement of engineering management systems to establish a development initiative of Korean defense specification practice standard.

  • A submarine good military weapon because of its confidentiality and intimidating power. Therefore, training warfighters how to maneuver submarine is very important. Because submarine is very expensive and has regional and temporal limitations, M&S(Modeling and Simulation) can be a good alternative. However, as the existing M&S systems of submarine generally use expensive commercial software and dedicated hardware, which cause the warfighters to take troubles to visit the secured places, and then to train themselves during limited time slots. Also, many M&S systems have only one-channel display system which reduces the sense of immersiveness. Another problem is that many heterogeneous simulators can hardly be used as an integrated system. To solve these problems, X3D, a platform-independent and open standard graphic file format, is used with the general-purpose PCs. To increase immersiveness, multi-channel display system and a motion chair are used. Finally, HLA/RTI is used to integrate individual components of the simulator. All of these are verified through experiments.

  • Called VISTA (Variable-stability In-flight Simulator Test Aircraft), the one-of-a-kind NF-l6D has a simulation system that can mimic several aircraft. Though housed in an F-l6 Fighting Falcon airframe, VISTA can also act like the F-15 Eagle or the Navy's F-14 Tomcat. More importantly, such flexibility allows for improved training and consolidation of some sorties. Consequently USAF Test Pilot School students will have an opportunity to learn how to test future integrated cockpits. In this paper we will use the multiple model adaptive estimation (MMAE) and the multiple model adaptive controller (MMAC) techniques to model the aircraft's flight control system containing the longitudinal and lateral-directional axes. Single and dual actuator and sensor failures will also be included in the simulation. White Gaussian noise will be included to simulate the effects of atmospheric disturbances.

  • Modeling and simulation techniques construct experimental environment considering battlefields and are able to analyze performance of components of weapon system that closely resemble reality. However, developed model has low scalability and not cared reusability because it has been used only in a limited range of domain. In this paper, we develop a verification tool to verify reusability of developed component for dynamic reconfiguration and to judge scalability of it and a management tool to control data of it effectively. In addition, dynamic reconfiguration architecture of guided weapon systems designed in the previous study has been applied to SAM(Surface to Air Missile) System Simulator, and we study effectiveness of the developed component. Thus the user can configure various guided weapon systems through simulation application of dynamic reconfiguration architecture of component.

  • This paper presents design and implementation of the monitoring system for the distributed simulation of underwater warfare. As importance of defense modeling and simulation(M&S) has raised, Simulation-Based Acquisition(SBA) was authorized for an obligatory process in the development process of weapon systems. Yet, it requires tremendous resources to develop a large-scale simulation system that describes complex and broad battlefields. Therefore, an approach of the distributed system was devised to develop a new simulation system combining legacy simulators that were developed for confined purpose and sole operations. High-Level Architecture(HLA) of distributed systems is a standardized protocol by IEEE for the distributed simulation system and Run-Time Infrastructure(RTI) is an implementation of HLA to structure efficient distributed systems. The main objective of this paper is to derive appropriate monitoring factors for underwater warfare simulation, design and implementation of the monitoring system to analyze the factors based on HLA/RTI.
