  • In this study, Ringing is investigated by continuous wavelet transform. Ringing is considered to be one of the typical transient phenomena in the field of ocean engineering. The wavelet analysis is adopted to analyze ringing from the point that wavelet analysis is capable of frequency analysis as well as time domain analysis. The use mother wavelet is the Morlet wavelet. The relation between the frequency of the time series and that of wavelet can be clearly defined with Mor1et wavelet. Experimental data obtained by other researchers was used. The wave height time series and acceleration times series of the surface piercing cylinder were analyzed. The results show that the proposed scheme can detect typical frequency region by the time domain analysis which could hardly be detected if one relied on the frequency analysis.

  • This paper deals with speech enhancement methods using the wavelet transform. A cycle-spinning scheme and undecimated wavelet transform are used for denoising of speech signals, and then their results are compared with that of the conventional wavelet transform. We apply soft-thresholding technique for removing additive background noise from noisy speech. The symlets 8-tap wavelet and pyramid algorithm are used for the wavelet transform. Performance assessments based on average SNR, cepstral distance and informal subjective listening test are carried out. Experimental results demonstrate that both cycle-spinning denoising(CSD) method and undecimated wavelet denoising(CWD) method outperform conventional wavelet denoising(UWD) method in objective performance measure as welt as subjective listening test. The two methods also show less "clicks" that usually appears in the neighborhood of signal discontinuities.

  • Gas insulated switchgear(GIS) is an important equipment in a substation. It is highly desirable to measure a partial discharge(PD) in GIS which is a symptom before insulation breakdown occurs. The issue is that the PD signal is weak and sensitive to external noise. In this paper, the algorithm for detection of PD in GIS using wavelet transform is proposed. The wavelet transform provides a direct quantitative measure of spectral content, "dynamic spectrum", in the time-frequency domain. The recommended mother wavelet is 'Daubechies' wavelet. 'db4', the most commonly applied mother wavelet in the power quality analysis, can be used most properly in disturbance phenomena which occurs rapidly for a short time. Through the procedure of wavelet transform, noise extraction and reconstruction, the signal is Analyzed to determine the magnitude of PD in GIS. In experimental results, we can know that partial discharge is exactly detected in combination of Dl and D2 using wavelet transform.transform.

  • This paper presents the application of continuous wavelet transform for determination of dynamic parameters of continuous beam subjected to moving load. Morlet wavelet is used as mother wavelet in wavelet transform. Dynamic parameters are estimated from the magnitudes and arguments of the wavelet coefficients obtained by wavelet transforming the response time histories of joints on the beam. This study shows that the estimated parameters such as natural frequencies, dmping ratios and mode shapes are to be well-compared with those of the finite element analysis.

  • In order to approximate a nonlinear function, modular wavelet networks combining wavelet theory and modular concept based on single layer neural network have been proposed as an alternative to conventional wavelet neural networks and kind of modular network. Modular wavelet networks provide better approximating performance than conventional one. In this paper, we propose an effective method to construct an optimal modualr wavelet network using genetic algorithm. This is verified through experimental results.

  • In this paper we propose a new approach to the variable selection problem for a primary resolution and wavelet basis functions in wavelet regression. Most wavelet shrinkage methods focus on thresholding the wavelet coefficients, given a primary resolution which is usually determined by the sample size. However, both a primary resolution and the basis functions are affected by the shape of an unknown function rather than the sample size. Unlike existing methods, our method does not depend on the sample size and also takes into account the shape of the unknown function.

  • Wavelet coefficients are known to have decorrelating properties, since wavelet is orthonormal transformation. but empirically, those wavelet coefficients of images, like edges, are not statistically independent. Jansen and Bultheel(1999) developed the empirical Bayes approach to improve the classical threshold algorithm using local characterization in Markov random field. They consider the clustering of significant wavelet coefficients with uniform distribution. In this paper, we developed wavelet thresholding algorithm using Laplacian distribution which is more realistic model.

  • In this paper, we give the definitions of the q-Haar and q-Gabor wavelet. Instead of using the conventional Gaussian distribution as a kernel of the Gabor wavelet, if the q-normal distribution is used, we can get the q-Gabor wavelet as a possible generalization of the Gabor wavelet. The q-normal distribution, which is given by the author, is one of the generalized Gaussian distribution. On the other hand, if two sets of the q-normal distribution are connected anti-symmetrically, we can get the q-Haar wavelet as a possible generalization of the Haiw wavelet. We give experiments on the q-eabor and q-Haar wavelet and discuss about the q-Gabor and q-Haar wavelet.

  • In this study, a basic concept of wavelet encoding and its advantages over Fourier based phase encoding application. Wavelet encoding has been proposed as an alternative way to Fourier based phase encoding in magnetic resonance imaging. In wavelet encoding, the RF pulse is designed to generate wavelet-shaped excitation profile of spins. From the resulting echo signals, the wavelet transform coefficients of spin distribution are acquired and an original spin density is reconstructed from wavelet expansion. Wavelet encoding has several advantages over phase encoding. By minimizing redundancy of the data acquisition in a dynamic series of images, we can avoid some encoding steps without serious loss of quality in reconstructed image. This strategy may be regarded as data compression during imaging. Although there are some limitations in wavelet encoding, it is a promising scheme in a dynamic imaging.

  • Wavelet scheme can be applied to the various remote sensing problems: conventional multi-resolution image analysis, compression of large image sets, fusion of heterogeneous sensor image and segmentation of features. In this study, we attempted wavelet-based filtering and its analysis. Traditionally, statistical methods and adaptive filter are used to manipulate noises in the image processing procedure. While we tried to filter random noise from optical image and radar image using Discrete Wavelet Transform (DW1) and Stationary Wavelet Transform (SW1) and compared with existing methods such as median filter and adaptive filter. In result, SWT preserved boundaries and reduced noises most effectively. If appropriate thresholds are used, wavelet filtering will be applied to detect road boundaries, buildings, cars and other complex features from high-resolution imagery in an urban environment as well as noise filtering
