  • We report on the polarization-insensitive design and fabrication of an arrayed waveguide gratings (AWG's) using sol-gel derived silica glass films formed on fused silica substrates to provide cheap and stable tools for better design. An arrayed-waveguide grating multiplexer with raised structure is fabricated in order to effect polarization sensitivity. Since polarization is usually not known after propagation in an optical fiber. passive WDM components such as monolithic wavelength demultiplexer have to be polarization insensitive. Here, we observed that polarization have effect on crosstalk of output spectrum in arrayed-waveguide grating

  • The crosstalks of two-waveguide & three-waveguide directional couplers are analyzed. Advantages and disadvantages for each coupler are compared and discussed. Based on the relationship between the coupled mode and the normal mode, the mathematical expressions are derived in terms of the crosstalks for each directional coupler. Numerical techniques such as the finite-difference method and the beam propagation method are employed to testify the validity of the derived equations. The calculation results show that two-waveguide directional coupler is superior to any types of three-waveguide couplers from the practical viewpoint of the crosstalk and the coupling length.

  • A new miniaturized 4-port waveguide generating a transverse electromagnetic wave is proposed. The waveguide presents enhanced performance of higher field uniformity in extended test volume up to an increased test frequency limit compared to that of the conventional 2-port waveguide. The advantageous features of the proposed waveguide have been obtained through a new design scheme based on effective miniaturization maintaining good impedance matching. Consequently, we can provide a more accurate electromagnetic compatibility test method, covering larger devices operating in higher frequencies, which is a marked improvement upon the conventional approaches.

  • New high-performance Ka-band waveguide-to-microstrip transitions for millimeter-wave transceiver applications have been developed and characterized. These transitions are probe-type, but the dielectric material completely covers the whole waveguide aperture, thus providing moisture-barrier and robustness in the probe section. The new probe transitions are also designed to be less sensitive to fabrication tolerances. Further performance enhancements have been obtained by placing vias around the waveguide aperture. Also, the resonance phenomena associated with waveguide wall-penetration have been identified. The developed probe transitions provide insertion loss less than 0.4 dB over entire Ka-band frequencies, but can be optimized for narrowband applications with insertion loss less than 0.2 dB.

  • The radiating multislotted antennas widely used in the antennas technique are rather prospective for the application in industrial installations for microwave heating. In this paper, the model of such an antenna is experimentally investigated. The model under investigation presents a section of the waveguide Inn 340 whose broad wall contains 15 movable slotted plates. This design allows to experimentally define a location of all the slots providing the necessary distribution of radiating power along the waveguide with minimal SWR of all the system. The variants of power uniform distribution along the waveguide as well as the power decreasing to the waveguide end are examined. The application of plates with different thickness allowed to estimate the influence of the walls thickness on the Power distribution. The possibility of system extra-tuning with the help of tuning screws located in the vicinity of each slot is considered. Obtained results are compared to the conducted theoretical calculations and data in references.

  • A clear and efficient design method for a microstrip-to-waveguide inline transition, which is based on an analytical model, is presented. The transition consists of three parts: a microstrip-to-SIW transition, a dielectric-loaded waveguide with substrate-height, and a stepped-height waveguide. The shape of the transitional structure is formed for impedance matching. Two equivalent type0s of dielectric-loaded transitional structures are proposed. The design method is applicable to any size of the waveguide, but a design method of two Ka-band transitions is demonstrated. The proposed transitions, in a back-to-back configuration, have less than 1.2 dB insertion loss and more than 15 dB return loss from 29.8 GHz to 38.2 GHz.

  • The waveguide finite element (WFE) method is a useful numerical technique to investigate wave propagation along waveguide structures which have uniform cross-sections along the length direction ('x' direction). In the present paper, the vibration and radiated noise of the submerged pipe with fluid is investigated numerically by coupling waveguide finite elements and wavenumber boundary elements. The pipe and internal fluid are modelled with waveguide finite elements and the external fluid with wavenumber boundary elements which are fully coupled. In order to examine this model, the point mobility, dispersion curves and radiated power are calculated and compared for several different coupling conditions between the pipe and internal/external fluids.

  • This paper describes operation mechanism of a novel optical waveguide phase modulator with optical bistability characteristics by self electro-optic effect. The fabricated device structure is an optical waveguide modulator, using a refractive index change by an applied electric field, parallel integrated with SEED with an electrical bistability. GaAs/AlGaAs MQW is used as the core layer of the waveguide modulator and the absorption layer of SEED. The absorbed optical power in SEED changes the diode voltage and controls the optical power propagating through the waveguide phase modulator. Optical bistability of waveguide phase modulator is experimentally obtained by using electrical bistability of SEED. Compared to other waveguide modulators, the proposed one has an asset that the lowest optical power is required to generate optical bistability.

  • This paper proposed a novel compact bandpass filter with folded half mode substrate integrated waveguide (FHMSIW) cavities using two-layer printed circuit board(PCB) process. The area of the FHMSIW filter is reduced by nearly 50 % and 75 % compared with half mode substrate integrated waveguide(HMSIW) filter and substrate integrated waveguide(SIW) filter, respectively. A four-pole Chebyshev FHMSIW bandpass filter at C-band has been designed, simulated and fabricated. Measured results are presented and found to agree with the full-wave simulated results by using Ansoft HFSS. The filter shows good performance and compact size.

  • This investigation presents a method to design an optimal shape of a matching waveguide connecting two waveguides having different impedances. The design objective is to maximize power transmission through the waveguide system. When an incident wave impinges on an elastic waveguide system consisting of waveguides of different impedances, all of the incident wave power may not pass through due to the mechanical impedance. Therefore, the maximization of the transmitted power through a waveguide difficult to achieve without a systematic design method. In this work, the optimal shape design of a matching waveguide connecting two waveguides of different impedances is formulated as a shape optimization problem. If the material of the matching waveguide is given, its shape is the only parameter controlling the transmission power. Relatively simple one dimensional elastic wave transmission problems will be considered in this work, but the underlying methodology and the related physics can be clearly demonstrated. The influences of initial configurations as well as the target frequencies on the optimized shapes will be also investigated.
