Stability of Inclined Premixed Planar Flames (기울어진 예혼합 평면화염의 안정성)

  • Stability of laminar premixed planar flames inclined in the gravitational field is asymptotically examined. The flame structure is resolved by a large activation energy asymptotics and a long wave approximation. The coupling between hydrodynamics and diffusion processes is included and near-unity Lewis number is assumed. The results show that as the flame is more inclined from the horizontal plane it becomes more unstable due to not only the decrease of stabilizing effect of gravity but also the increase of destabilizing effect of rotational flow. The obtained dispersion relation involves the Prandtl number and shows the destabilizing effect of viscosity. The analysis predicts that the phase velocity of unstable flame wave depends on not only the flame angle but also the Lewis number. For relatively short wave disturbances, still much larger than flame thickness, the most unstable wavelength is nearly independent on the flame angle and the flame can be stabilized by gravity and diffusion mechanism.

The Characteristics of Wave Statistical Data and Quality Assurance (파랑 통계자료의 특성과 신뢰성 검토)

  • This paper discusses the influence on long-tenn predictions of the ship response in ocean by using the Global Wave Statistics data, GWS, and wave information from the remote sensing satellites. GWS's standard scatter diagrams of significant wave height and zero-crossing wave period are suggested to be corrected to a round number of 0.01/1000 fitted with a statistical analytic model of the conditional lognormal distribution for zero-crossing wave period. The GEOSAT satellite data are utilized which presented by I. R. Young and G. J. Holland (1996, named as GEOSAT data). At first, qualities of this data are investigated, and statistical characteristic trends are studied by means of applying known probability distribution functions. The wave height data of GEOSAT are compared to the data observed onboard merchant ships, the data observed by measure instrument installed on the ocean-going container ship and so on. To execute a long-tenn prediction of ship response, joint probability functions between wave height and wave period are introduced, therefore long-term statistical predictions are executed by using the functions.

Cyclic fatigue resistance of the WaveOne Gold Glider, ProGlider, and the One G glide path instruments in double-curvature canals

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the cyclic fatigue resistance of the WaveOne Gold Glider, ProGlider and One G glide path instruments in artificial doublecurvature canals. Materials and Methods: This study included 15 WaveOne Gold Glider (size 15/0.08), 15 ProGlider (size 16/0.08), and 15 One G (size 16/0.06) nickel titanium files. The files were used in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions until they were broken in artificial double-curvature canals made of stainless steel. The time to fracture was recorded via a digital stopwatch and the number of rotations until fracture was also calculated. The data were statistically analyzed via the Kruskal-Wallis test. Results: The highest average number of rotations until fracture of the files was found for the WaveOne Gold Glider, followed by ProGlider and One G in order. Statistically significant differences were present between all groups of files (p < 0.05). Conclusions: In our study, the resistance of the WaveOne Gold Glider nickel-titanium (Ni-Ti) file to cyclic fatigue in S-shaped curved canals was found to be higher than that of the ProGlider and One G Ni-Ti files.

Characteristic Features Observed in the East-Asian Cold Anomalies in January 2011 (2011년 1월의 동아시아 한랭 아노말리 특성)

  • East Asia experienced extremely cold weather in January 2011, while the previous December and the following February had normal winter temperature. In this study National Centers for Environmental Prediction/National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP/NCAR) reanalysis data are used to investigate the characteristic features observed in the meteorological fields such as temperature, sea-level pressure, geopotential height, and wind during this winter period. In January the planetary-wave pattern is dominated by stationary-wave form in the mid-to-high latitude region, while transient waves are significant in the previous month. To understand the planetary-wave features quantitatively, harmonic analyses have been done for the 500-hPa geopotential height field. In the climatological-mean geopotential heights the wave numbers 1, 2, and 3 are dominant during the whole winter. In January 2011 the waves of number 1, 2, and 3 are dominant and stationary as in the climatological-mean field. In December 2010 and February 2011, however, the waves of number 4, 5, and 6 play a major role and show a transient pattern. In addition to the distinctive features in each month the planetary-wave patterns dependent on the latitude are also discussed.

Lift of and Wave Breaking behind a Moving Submerged Body with Shallow Submergence

  • We consider the following two questions mainly in this study. First one is how the free surface hayes affect the lift of a shallowly submerged moving body. For this matte., we reinterpret the theoretical results of Kochin(1936), and point out that the high Froude number approximation is not always on the safer side. Second one is what sort of dimensionless parameters determine the occurrence of wave breaking behind a moving submerged body. Temporarily before getting a better answer, we propose that the two-parameter-plane, namely, the plane of the Froude number and the square root of the ratio of the submerged depth and the body length, may be used for predicting the possibility of wave breaking behind the submerged body. A region in the parameter plane is put forth as that of wave breaking, and the validity of this proposal is shown by its agreement with the existing experimental data of Parkin et al(1955) and those of Duncan(1983). Finally, linear and nonlinear numerical results are compared with the existing experimental data to see in what range of the parameters the linear and nonlinear theory case predict the wave field and the pressure on the body with reasonable accuracy. However, since the experimental data, which offer both the pressure and wave elevation for a submerged moving body, are very scarce, much cannot be attained through this comparative study. Hence, it is strongly recommended to carry out well planned experiments to get such data.

Effect of flow bleed on shock wave/boundary layer interaction (유동의 흡입이 충격파/경계층의 간섭현상에 미치는 영향)

  • Experiments of shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interaction were conducted by using a supersonic wind tunnel. Nominal Mach number was varied in the range of 1.6 to 3.0 by means of different nozzles. The objective of the present study is to investigate the effects of boundary layer flow bleed on the interaction flow field in a straight tube. Two-dimensional slits were installed on the tube walls to bleed the turbulent boundary layer flows. The bleed flows were measured by an orifice. The ratio of the bleed mass flow to main mass flow was controlled within the range of 11 per cent. The wall pressures were measured by the flush mounted transducers and Schlieren optical observations were made for almost all of the experiments. The results show that the boundary layer flow bleed reduces the multiple shock waves to a strong normal shock wave. For the design Mach number of 1.6, it was found that the normal shock wave at the position of the silt was resulted from the main flow choking due to the suction of the boundary layer flow.

The Wave Propagation in transversely isotropic composite laminates (가로 등방성 복합재료의 파동전파에 관한 연구)

Finally, the results were confirmed by T300 Carbon fiber/5208 Epoxy materials. This approach could be applied to the detection of flaws in a transversely isotropic composite laminates by the water immersion C-scan procedure.

  • The aerodynamics of a projectile overtaking a moving shock wave is analyzed using a chimera scheme. The flow field characteristics for various shock wave Mach number and projectile masse are investigated. the unsteady forces acting on the projectile for both supersonic and impossible overtaking conditions are computed in order to analyze the aerodynamic characteristics of the projectile. It is seen that the projectile Mach number significantly affects the flow fields for both supersonic and impossible overtaking. Unsteady drag is influenced by the overtaking conditions. The unsteady drag coefficient is the highest for the impossible overtaking condition.

  • For the prediction on the onset of oblique shock wave-induced vortex breakdown, computational studies on the Oblique Shock wave/Vortex Interaction (OSVI) are conducted and compared with both experimental results and analytic model. A Shock-stable numerical scheme, the Roe scheme with Mach number-based function (RoeM), and a two-equation eddy viscosity-transport approach are used for three-dimensional turbulent flow computations. The computational configuration is identical to available experiment, and we attempt to ascertain the effect of parameters such as a vertex strength, streamwise velocity deficit, and shock strength at a freestream Mach number of 2.49. Numerical simulations using the ${\kappa}-{\omega}SST$ turbulence model and suitably modeled vortex profiles are able to accurately reproduce many fine features through a direct comparison with experimental observations. The present computational approach to determine the criterion on the onset of oblique shock wave-induced vortex breakdown is found to be in good agreement with both the experimental result and the analytic prediction.
