  • The purpose of this research is to develop a method for cutting non-circular holes on a bent thick plate. Generally in order to cut the holes on the large plates, a special-purpose 5-axis machine is needed. However, such a machine is unavailable in most of the machine shops. This paper provides a description of such a method that utilizes a general-purpose 5-axis water-jet machine in place of the special-purpose machine: First, the bent piece is transformed into a flat plate, where the shape of the holes is reconstructed by considering deformation during bending. Then, after a 5-axis NC data is generated, the holes on the flat plate are cut using the 5-axis water-jet machine. The final step is to return to its, original shape by bending the plate with its newly-cut holes. The proposed methodology is implemented as a dedicated system by customizing a commercial CAD/CAM system. Some illustrations are provided throughout the paper in order to show the validity of the proposed methods and the developed system.

  • Abrasive water-jet(AWJ) machining is a new cutting technology. The AWJ can cut various materials touch as metal, glass and stone. However, the AWJ machining makes troubles including kerf, rounding and side taper. In this study, we investigated the correlation between parameters of abrasive water-jet machining arid cutting characteristics. The machining parameter were the material thickness and the traverse speed. The experiment was conducted to cut the stainless steel(STS41) and the mild steel(SS41) specimens. The results of the experiment weirs presented as the relation between cutting conditions and trouble of a dimension error, a conner error, an uncut width and a kerf.

  • An experimental investigation is reported on the heat transfer coefficient from a rotating flat plate in a round turbulent normally impinging water jet. Tests were conducted over a range of jet flow rates, rotational speeds, jet radial posetions with various combinations of three jet nozzle diameter. Dimensionless correlation of average Nusselt number for laminar and turbulent flow is given in terms of jet and rotational Reynolds numbers, dimensionless jet radial position. We suggested various effective promotion methods according to heat transfer characteristics and aspects. The data presented herein will serve as a first step toward providing the information necessary to optimize in rational manner the cooling requirement of impingement cooled rotating machine components.

  • An experimental investigation is presented to study the effect nozzle spacing, jet to plate spacing and Reynolds number on the local heat transfer to normally upward impinging submerged circular water jets on a flat heated surface. Nozzle arrays are a single jet(nozzle dia. = 8 mm), a row of 3 jets(nozzle dia. = 4.6 mm, nozzle spacing = 37.5 mm) and a row of 5 jets(nozzle dia. = 3.6 mm, nozzle spacing = 25 mm), and jet to plate spacing ranging from 16∼80 mm(H/D = 2∼10) is tested. Reynolds number based on single jet exit condition is varied 30000∼70000($V_o$ = 3∼7 m/s). Except for the condition of H/D = 10, the average Nusselt number of multi-jet is higher than that of single jet. For H/D = 2, average Nusselt number is increased by 50.3∼82.5% for a row of 3 jets and by 52.9∼65.2% on a row of 5 jets when compared to the average Nusselt number on the single jet.

In this study, we experimently investigated the correlation between the traverse speed of the abrasive water-jet and the dimensional error of the workpiece according to the thickness and the types of the material. The specimen was the stainless steel and the mild steel and the predetermined contour cutting was conducted. A comer radius error, an uncut width and a kerf were measured and evaluated.

  • Metal cutting operations involve generation of heat due to friction between the tool and the pieces. This heat needs to be carried away otherwise it creates white spots. To reduce this abnormal heat cutting fluid is used. Cutting fluid also has an important role in the lubrication of the cutting edges of machine tools and the pieces they are shaping, and in sluicing away the resulting swarf. As a cutting fluid, water is a great conductor of heat but is not stable at high temperatures, so to improve stability an emulsion type mixed fluid with water and oil is often used. It is pumped over the cutting site of cutting machines as a state of atomized water droplet coated with oil by using jet. In this paper, to develop cutting fluid supplying nozzle to obtain ultra thin oil film for coating water droplet, a numerical analysis of three dimensional mixed fluid Jet through multi-stage nozzle was carried out by using a finite volume method. Jet flow characteristics such as nozzle exit velocity, development of mixing region, re-entrance and jet intensity were analyzed. Detailed mixing process of fluids such as air, water and oil in the nozzle were also investigated. It is easy to understand complex flow pattern in multi-stage nozzle. Important flow Information for advance design of cutting fluid supplying nozzle was drawn.

  • This paper concentrates on the development of a computational design program to determine nozzle size in water jet, combing the numerical optimization technique with the flow analysis code. To achieve the above objective, a two-dimensional model was developed for investigating the fluid flow in water jet and calculating the velocity and pressure distributions. The mathematical formulation as a standard ${k}-\varepsilon$ model was solved employing a general thermo fluid-mechanics computer program, PHOENICS code, which is based on the Semi-Implicit Method Pressure Linked Equations(SIMPLE) algorithm. The developed code was applied to water jet design to determine the nozzle size, and investigated the effect of the change of nozzle location. Calculated results showed that the flow pattern is not changed as the change of nozzle location.

  • This paper presents an evaluation of efficiency on glass precision machining by using abrasive water-jet machine. In this study, problems of conventional water-jet machining are examined experimentally and are analysized numerically. Especially, the reason of whitening on the machined surface of biochip glass is determined. It is found that the mass flow rate of abrasive input and transverse speed of water-jet are key parameters to control the direct machining of micro hole and channel on a glass substrate. Based on results of experimental analysis, possibility of direct fabrication of micro holes and channels on a glass substrate is successfully confirmed.

  • An experimental study of heat transfer of submerged water jet impinging normally on a flat plate is presented. Heat transfer measurements obtained with Reverse cone type nozzle(Rcone) were compared to those obtained with Cone type nozzle(Cone) and Square edged type nozzle(Vert) of the same diameter(D=8mm) for different jet velocities in the range of $3{\sim}7m/s(Re_D=30000{\sim}70000)$ and various nozzle-to target spacings($H/D=2{\sim}10$). The local Nusselt number profiles exhibited a sharp drop for $r/D{\leq}0.5$ and 2nd, 3rd peaks revealed at r/D=2, 3 respectively, followed by a slower decrease there after. The peaks were weakened with increasing the nozzle-to target spacing and decreasing the jet velocity. The stagnation Nusselt number of the Reverse cone type nozzle was larger than those of the other two nozzles for H/D=2. 10, but Cone type nozzle had the highest value for $H/D=4{\sim}8$. Also average Nusselt number of the Reverse cone type nozzle was higher than those of the other two nozzles at $H/D=2{\sim}10$, except for $V_o=7ms$ of H/D=6.
