  • Coal seam gas (CSG) production involves extracting methane from coal seams with ground water which is so called a primary by-product of this process, and is often rich in salts and other constituents. The predicted large volume and variable quality of this water make water management a topic associated with CSG production. In the past, the amount of this water used to be pumped into the vacant aquifer, or into the river during the life of individual production wells. Australian government make a strategies for management and beneficial use of the water. From this point of view, a detailed assessment has not been undertaken, it is necessary for water resource production to analysis the "Coal Seam Gas Water (CSG Water) Management Policy Study" published in Queensland, Australia.

  • Ordinary concrete uses aggregate sufficiently soaked with water, and is weighed, mixed with other materials and placed in accord with performances required in the construction field. Recently special concrete with high fluidity and durability is required but it is difficult to use top-quality concrete due to lack of high-quality aggregate, delayed transportation because of traffic jam, etc. In addition, sometimes the use of a remicon is inevitable just for small-sized concrete constructions or it is difficult for a remicon to reach remote construction places such as mountainous areas. To solve these problems, this study attempted to pack concrete materials. In other words, it is to instantize concrete. This study dried aggregate, a material of concrete, and compared the change of absorption phase of the aggregate in water and in paste in order to examine the effect of the dryness of aggregate on its absorption rate and, based on the absorption rate, decided water addition ratio necessary for the reduction of unit quantity caused by the use of dry aggregate in designing concrete mixture, and analyzed the properties of unhardened concrete according to water addition ratio in manufacturing concrete using aggregate in the state of absolute dryness and in the state of surface dryness.

  • Agriculture is dependable to weather condition and its change so that it is necessary to understand the impacts of climatic change. The aim of this study is to analyze the change of consumptive use of water and rice yield due to climate change using CERES-Rice. In this study, the weather data of three emission scenario of A1B, A2 and B1 created from CGCM (Coupled General Circulation Model) were used from 2011 to 2100, and downscaled daily weather data were simulated using LARS-WG (Long Ashton Research Station Weather Generator). The input data for cultivated condition for simulating CERSE (Crop-Environment Resource Synthesis)-Rice were created referring to standard cultivation method of paddy rice in Korea. The results showed that consumptive uses of water for paddy rice were projected decreasing to 4.8 % (2025s), 9.1 % (2055s), 12.6 % (2085s) comparing to the baseline value of 403.5 mm in A2 scenario. The rice yield of baseline was 450.7 kg/10a and projected increasing to -0.4 % (2025s), 3.9 % (2055s), 17.5 % (2085s) in A1B scenario. The results demonstrated relationships between consumptive use of water and rice yields due to climate change and can be used for the agricultural water resources development planning and cultivation method of paddy rice for the future.

  • Energy use has been recognized worldwide as a main cause of global warming and it is at the center of climate change. In this study, problems and measures of zero-energy building construction are investigated and analyzed. Based on the results, evaluation criteria of the zero-energy building are suggested. Performance related factors(Q) representing the environmental grade were divided into three categories as outdoor, indoor environment and maintenance. Energy related factors(LR) representing the energy load were divided into an energy, materials & resources, water cycle management, land use and transportation. Detailed fifty three items are listed for the evaluation under the consideration of energy, water cycle management sections gave weight. Upon receiving the first in the environment friendly certification system, Seoul Central Post Office and Seoul Metropolitan Water Supply Center evaluated. The reason why this score difference is due to lack of use of new generation energy building construction is required expensive costs so need expansion of governmental support. This effort is successful zero energy building construction and copes with global warming and climate change.

  • Watershed boundaries and flow paths within the watershed are the most important factors required in watershed analysis. Most often the derivation of watershed boundaries and stream network and flow paths is based on topographical maps but spatial variation of flow direction is not clearly understandable using this method. Water resources projects currently use 1: 50, 000-scale ground survey or aerial photography-based topographical maps to derive watershed boundary and stream network. In basins, where these maps are not available or not accessible it creates a real barrier to watershed geo-spatial analysis. Such situations require the use of global datasets, like GTOPO30. Global data sets like ETOPO5, GTOPO30 are the only data sets, which can be used to derive basin boundaries and stream network and other terrain variations like slope aspects and flow direction and flow accumulation of the watershed in the absence of topographic maps. Approximately 1-km grid-based GTOPO 30 data sets can derive better outputs for larger basins, but they fail in flat areas like the Karkheh basin in Iran and the Amudarya in Uzbekistan. A new window in geo-spatial hydrology has opened after the launching of the space-borne satellite stereo pair of the Terra ASTER sensor. ASTER data sets are available at very low cost for most areas of the world and global coverage is expected within the next four years. The DEM generated from ASTER data has a reasonably good accuracy, which can be used effectively for hydrology application, even in small basins. This paper demonstrates the use of stereo pairs in the generation of ASTER DEMs, the application of ASTER DEM for watershed boundary delineation, sub-watershed delineation and explores the possibility of understanding the drainage flow paths in irrigation command areas. All the ASTER derived products were compared with GTOPO and 1:50,000-based topographic map products and this comparison showed that ASTER stereo pairs can derive very good data sets for all the basins with good spatial variation, which are equal in quality to 1:50,000 scale maps-based products.

  • It is very important to ensure the reliability of dam inflow data, which is critical in planning and managing the supply and demand of water resources in a basin. However, the simple water balance model sometimes results in negative inflows and does not consider the actual inflow characteristics. In this study, to address these issues, the existing water balance formula was modified by considering evaporation which is available for calculation among other outflows. The modified water balance formula was applied to the Soyang Dam. The results showed that the rate of negative inflows decreased in the re-evaluated dam inflow data and it was possible to secure consistency for the total inflow volume. In addition, investigating the water availability in the Soyang Dam watershed based on the water balance concept considering evaporation, it was found that direct water use in the human aspect was about 60%, and the indirect water use in the natural aspect was about 40%. In drought years, it was also confirmed that the proportion of indirect use of water resources increased.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of various mix designs of concrete on the compressive strengths and corrosive rates when the concretes were immersed in sea water of the West Sea, as the part of study related to durated to durability of concrete by action of the sea water. Concrete mix designs used in this study were ordinary Concrete mix, Concrete mixes with different admixtures such as fly ash, pozzolith and vinsol resin, and pozzolan concrete mix. The concrete specimens were made and cured for 7 days and 28 days in the fresh water in accordance with the Korean Standard specification for concrete. Compressive strengths of the specimens were measured after immersing the specimens for one year in fresh water and sea water which were placed indoors. The sea water used in this test was taken from the Bay of Ahsan. Corrosive rate was also tested after immersing the specimens in the same sea water and placed indoors for one year. The results obtained from the tests are summarized as follows; 1. Compressive strength of an ordinary concrete was the lowest of the various mix desings of concrete immersed both in the fresh water and the sea water. Therefore, the uses of pozzolan cement, fly ash, pozoolith and vinsol resin in mix design of concrete had and effect on increasing compressive strength. 2. Pozzolan concrete was the most effective on compressive strength in the fresh water, but it had less effect than concrete with fly ash admixture immersed in the sea water. 3. The use of fly ash admixture in mix design of concrete showed higher strength as the immersing age is longer both in fresh water and sea water than the other concretes besides pozzolan concrete, but the concretewith fly ash admixture had lower strength than pozzolan concrete in the sea water. Therefore, concrete with fly ash admixture might be better than the pozzolan concrete as far as durability of concrete to sea water was concerned. 4. The use of pozzolith admixture in mix design of concrete had less compressive strength than the use of pozzolan cement for fly ash admixture both in fresh water and sea water. However, the concrete with pozzolith admixture was much stronger than one with vinsol resin admixture in fresh water, but somewhat stronger in the sea water. 5. Though the use of vinsol resin admixture was more effective than ordinary concrete on compressive strength both in fresh water and sea water, it was the least compressive strength among the other concretes. 6. Relation between compressive strengths and absorption rates of every kind of concrete besides concrete with fly ash admixture showed a linear regression line and the compressive strength is highee as the absorption rate is lower. Concrete with fly ash admixture had extremely high strength in comparison with corresponding adsorption rates of the other concretes. 7. Corrosive appearance on the surface of concretes was not occured significantly when exposed to the sea water for one year, However, the specimens of concretes besides ordinary concrete were a little heavier than those cured in fresh water for 28 days.

  • Background: In Korea, there is low awareness of the respiratory health problems caused by the use of humidifiers, leading to a lack of governmental measures. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to review cases of varying degrees of humidifier lung and fever in connection with the use of humidifiers and to summarize the probable environmental agents causing these cases. Methods: We searched all articles reporting on humidifier lung, humidifier fever, and humidifier diseases caused by the use of a humidifier both at home and in the workplace. Results: We summarized a number of cases of varying degrees of respiratory diseases resulting from inhalation of water mist of humidifiers containing various species of bacteria and fungi and their toxins. Type of respiratory disease connected with humidifier lung includes interstitial pneumonitis, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, fever and several respiratory symptoms. Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), Actinomycetes, endotoxins and contaminated humidifier water were the most commonly suspected probable environmental agents causing humidifier lung. In Korea, the use of humidifier biocide is suspected as a likely cause of fatal lung injury including death and lung transplantation. Conclusion: Governmental policy should be devised and measures including a national surveillance system should be taken to prevent humidifier lung caused by the use of humidifiers.
