  • In contemporary days, hydrogen-based energies including batteries are renowned to be effective. And its effectiveness comes from the fact that it possesses high efficiency as an energy carrier. Eco-friendly and high purity of hydrogens comes out from water electrolysis. And among different types of electrolysis, proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis is considered the most renewable, cheap, and eco-friendly. It produces oxygen and hydrogens which are feasible in using as energies. Since it has such a number of benefits, increased research is going on in PEM electrolysis. Nafion is widely used as PEM, but high cost and various other disadvantages leads to the exploration of alternative materials. This review is broadly classified into Nafion and non Nafion based PEM for water electrolysis.

  • The following thesis researched into the characteristics of electrolytic ion water with different levels of electrical conductivity by adding NaCl into tap water which is for experimental use in multi-layered electrolytic ion water generator. Electrolytic ion water is generated by underwater electrolysis and the electrolysis generator has a simple structure, is easy to control and is highly utilized in industries. Electrolytic ion water is useful in many areas since it has a superior sterilizing power, has no possibility of secondary pollution itself as water and removes active oxygen. In the experiment, we used tap water with NaCl excluded and water with three different levels of electrical conductivity by changing NaCl concentration levels into three levels. The features of current and voltage in electrolytic ion water represented a form of quadric instead of the linear characteristic following ohm's law. As well, as the electric conductivity of water and applied voltage increased, we were able to generate much stronger acid water and alkali water.

  • In this study, we sought to verify the applicability of anion exchange membrane water electrolysis system using FAA-3-50, Neosepta-ASE, Sustainion grade T, and Fujifilm type 10, which are commercial anion exchange membranes. The morphology of the commercial membranes and the elements on the surface were analyzed using SEM/EDX to confirm the distribution of functional groups included in the commercial membranes. In addition, mechanical strength and decomposition temperature were measured using UTM and TGA to check whether the driving conditions of the water electrolyte were satisfied. The ion exchange capacity and ion conductivity were measured to understand the performance of anion exchange membranes, and the alkaline resistance of each commercial membrane was checked and durability test was performed because they were driven in an alkaline environment. Finally, a membrane-electrode assembly was manufactured and a water electrolysis single cell test was performed to confirm cell performance at 60℃, 70℃, and 80℃. The long-term cell test was measured 20 cycles at other temperatures to compare water electrolysis performance.

  • An anatase TiO2 nanotube array (NTA) was fabricated by anodization and successive heat treatments. When the anatase TiO2 NTA was cathodically polarized, its color changed to blue, and it could be used as an electrochemically active anode for an oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline water electrolysis. The structure of the blue anatase TiO2 NTA was controlled by the anodization conditions and its catalytic activity increased with an increase of the surface area. The activity of the blue anatase TiO2 NTA gradually reduced with the continued OER because of the partial oxidation of Ti3+ to Ti4+. However, an intermittent cathodic regeneration process could significantly slow its reduction rate. The blue anatase TiO2 NTA could be an alternative anode for alkaline water electrolysis.

  • With worldwide efforts to increase the portion of renewable energy for $CO_2$ reductions, a lot of attention has been paid to P2G (power-to-gas) in Europe and Japan to efficiently utilize the surplus electricity. In this paper, economic feasibility analysis has been carried out for P2G using PEM water electrolysis by reflecting current economic status in Korea. In addition, efficiency and electricity price required to be competent in Korean market were provided. Based on cash flow diagrams, unit production costs for $H_2$ and $CH_4$ were estimated and profitability of P2G using PEM water electrolysis was analyzed.

  • Under the condition of water electrolysis in aqueous hydrochloric acid as the electrolyte, the lead removal from the lead-loaded activated carbon packed on the anode was investigated. The adequate flow condition is a total flow rate of 10 mL/min in the same flow rate ratio to both electrodes. The increase of current decreases pH values at the anode and the decrease of pH leads to the lead removal. This work shows that the water electrolysis is an efficient method for the lead removal from the lead-loaded activated carbon with a reduction in quantity of the chemical used in comparison with the acid rinse.

  • In order to evaluate the possibility as a separator in alkaline water electrolysis, the high temperature characteristics were evaluated by measuring the membrane resistance and durability of 5 types of commercial anion exchange membranes in 7 M KOH solution and at 80℃. The membrane resistance of AEM membrane measured in 7 M KOH solution and at 80℃ had a lower value of about 8-24 times compared to the other membranes. The durability of AEM membrane tested with the soaking time in 7 M KOH solution and at 80℃ showed a very good stability and that of FAAM40 and FAAM75-PK showed secondly a good stability. The thermal stability with the soaking time in 7 M KOH solution and at 80℃ of FAAM40 and FAAM75-PK membrane analyzed by thermo-gravimetric analysis showed a good stability compared to the other membranes.

  • In order to reduce the pollution load from the livestock farms and to improve the water quality of the effluent in livestock wastewater, the electrolysis system is introduced. For the selection of optimal electrode, various combination of electrodes such as carbon, Al and Fe were examined. In this study, electrode material, electrolyte concentration, electrode distance, current density, and pH value were found to have significant effect on both pollutant removal efficiency and current efficiency in electrochemical oxidation process. After electrolysis for 90 min with carbon/Al, it was observed that COD, T-N, T-P and $NH_4^+-N$ of livestock waste-water were removed with $80\%,\;61\%,\;81\%\;and\;87\%$, respectively.

  • Conventional disinfectants and disinfection method are expensive, hazardous and often require long periods of exposure. Recently, there is growing interest in complex disinfection process as a disinfection technique in medical instruments such as endoscope, hand piece bur to improve the disinfection efficiency and conveniency. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of a new complex process for the purpose of disinfection of Escherichia coli in water. Three single process (electrolysis, UV and ultrasonic process) was combined dual and triple disinfection process. The order of disinfection performance for E. coli in dual process lie in: Electrolysis + UV > Electrolysis + Ultrasonic > UV + Ultrasonic process. Disinfection efficiency of E. coli and degradation of N, N-Dimethyl-4-nitrosoaniline (RNO, indicating material of OH radical formation) of dual process was higher than that of the triple process (Electrolysis + UV + Ultrasonic process). In electrolysis + UV process, disinfection tendency was well agreed with RNO degradation tendency.
