  • In recent, Korea has faced on water quality management problems in reservoir and river because of increasing water temperature and rainfall frequency caused by climate change. This study is effectively to manage water quality for establishment of algal bloom forecasting models with artificial neural network. Daecheong reservoir located in Geum river has suitable environment for algal bloom because it has lots of contaminants that are flowed by rainfall. By using back propagation algorithm of artificial neural networks (ANNs), a model has been built to forecast the algal bloom over short-term (1, 3, and 7 days). In the model, input factors considered the hydrologic and water quality factors in Daecheong reservoir were analyzed by cross correlation method. Through carrying out the analysis, input factors were selected for algal bloom forecasting model. As a result of this research, the short term algal bloom forecasting models showed minor errors in the prediction of the 1 day and the 3 days. Therefore, the models will be very useful and promising to control the water quality in various rivers.

  • The judgement model to warn of possible pollution accident is constructed by multi-perceptron, multi layer neural network, neuro-fuzzy and it is trained stability, notice, and warming situation due to developed standard axis. The water quality forecasting model is linked to the runoff forecasting model, and joined with the judgement model to warn of possible pollution accident, which completes the artificial intelligence warning system. And GUI (Graphic User Interface) has been designed for that system. GUI screens, in order of process, are main page, data edit, discharge forecasting, water quality forecasting, warming system. The application capability of the system was estimated by the pollution accident scenario. Estimation results verify that the artificial intelligence warning system can be a reasonable judgement of the noized water pollution data.

  • The purpose of this study is the prediction of pollutant loads into Seomjin river watershed using neural networks model. The pollutant loads into river watershed depend upon the water quantity of inflow from the upstream as well as the water quality of the inflow into the river. For the estimation of pollutants into river, a neural networks model which has the features of multi-layered structure and parallel multi-connections is used. The used water quality parameters are BOD, COD and SS into Seomjin river. The results of calibration are satisfactory, and proved the availability of a proposed neural networks model to estimate short-term water quality pollutants into river system.

  • Algal blooms in potable water supplies are becoming an increasingly prevalent and serious water quality problem around the world. In addition to precipitating taste and odor problems, blooms damage the environment, and some classes like cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) release toxins that can threaten human health, even causing death. There is a recognized need in the water industry for models that can accurately forecast in real-time algal bloom events for planning and mitigation purposes. In this study, using data for an interconnected system of rivers and reservoirs operated by a New Jersey water utility, various ANN models, including both discrete prediction and classification models, were developed and tested for forecasting counts of three different algal classes for one-week and two-weeks ahead periods. Predictor model inputs included physical, meteorological, chemical, and biological variables, and two different temporal schemes for processing inputs relative to the prediction event were used. Despite relatively limited historical data, the discrete prediction ANN models generally performed well during validation, achieving relatively high correlation coefficients, and often predicting the formation and dissipation of high algae count periods. The ANN classification models also performed well, with average classification percentages averaging 94 percent accuracy. Despite relatively limited data events, this study demonstrates that with adequate data collection, both in terms of the number of historical events and availability of important predictor variables, ANNs can provide accurate real-time forecasts of algal population counts, as well as foster increased understanding of important cause and effect relationships, which can be used to both improve monitoring programs and forecasting efforts.

  • 1078 sets of mixtures in total that include fly ash, slag, and/or silica fume have been collected for prediction on concrete properties. A new database platform (Compos) has been developed, by which the stepwise multiple linear regression (SMLR) and BP artificial neural networks (BP ANNs) programs have been applied respectively to identify correlations between the concrete properties (strength, workability, and durability) and the dosage and/or quality of raw materials'. The results showed obvious nonlinear relations so that forecasting by using nonlinear method has clearly higher accuracy than using linear method. The forecasting accuracy rises along with the increasing of age and the prediction on cubic compressive strength have the best results, because the minimum average relative error (MARE) for 60-day cubic compressive strength was less than 8%. The precision for forecasting of concrete workability takes the second place in which the MARE is less than 15%. Forecasting on concrete durability has the lowest accuracy as its MARE has even reached 30%. These conclusions have been certified in a ready-mixed concrete plant that the synthesized MARE of 7-day/28-day strength and initial slump is less than 8%. The parameters of BP ANNs and its conformation have been discussed as well in this study.

  • The Anyang stream is one of the Han river in Seoul Metropolitan area. It is 35.1km long, has a basin area of $282.26km^2$ and touches seven cities of Kyounggido and some of Seoul Metropolitan area. The situations of Anyang stream have resulted in severe stream water pollution problems. The purpose of this study were to measure the hydraulic characteristics and water quality, to make the countermeasures to achieve the stream water quality, to suggest the future conditions to improve water quality trough the Hydrodynamic and Water Quality Modal(WASP4). As the result of Anyang stream water quality forecsat, they are follows. Sewerage systems in the watershed of the Anyang stream have to be amended for wrong systemn and constructed in the upstream area of Anyang. The discharge of industrial wastewater has to be throughly controlled from the upstream area of the Anyang stream. Hydrodynamic and Water Quality Model(WASP4) for this study revealed the future water quality of the Anyang stream by computer simulation.

  • The objective of this study is to test the applicability of neural network models to forecast water quality at Naesa and Pyongchang river. Water quality data devided into rainy day and non-rainy day to find characteristics of them. The mean and maximum data of rainy day show higher than those of non-rainy day. And discharge correlate with TOC at Pyongchang river. Neural network model is trained to the correlation of discharge with water quality. As a result, it is convinced that the proposed neural network model can apply to the analysis of real time water quality monitoring.

  • In recently, the green algae bloom is one of the most severe challenges. The seven days prior prediction is in operation to issues the water quality warning, but it also needs a longer time of prediction to take preemptive measures. The objective of the study is to establish a method to conduct a 3-month prior prediction of Chl-a concentration in the Daechong Lake and tested its applicability as a supplementary of current water quality warning. The historical record of water quality in the Daechong Lake and seasonal forecasting of ECMWF were obtained, and its time-series characteristics were analyzed. The Chl-a forecasting model was established using a correlation between Chl-a concentration and meteorological factor and NARX model, and its efficiency was compared.
