The cooling characteristic of water-air mixed spray for high water mass flux is not well defined, compared to that of highly pressurized spray. A series of research program was planned to develop the boiling correlation for whole temperature range in case of water-air mixed spray with high water mass flux. The cooling experiments of hot steel surface with initial temperature of 820$^{\circ}C$ were conducted in unsteady state with relatively high water mass flux. A computer program was developed to calculate the heat flux inversely from measured data by three inserted thermocouples. Finally the effects of water and air mass flux on the averaged film boiling heat flux and wetting temperature were studied. In this 1st report, it is found that the boiling curve was similar to that of highly pressurized spray and the decreased slope of heat flux in film boiling region with respect to surface temperature became steep by increasing air mass flux. Also it is shown that, by increasing air mass flux, the averaged heat flux in film boiling region was increased, and then saturated and the wetting temperature was increased, and then decreased. Finally when the heat flux in film boiling region is compared with that of highly pressurized spray, it is known that the cooling is improved by introducing air up to 60%.

A time-series sediment trap was deployed at 1,034 m water depth in the eastern Bransfield Strait from December 25, 1998 to December 24, 1999. About 99 % of total mass fluxes were observed during the austral summer and fall (January, February, and March). The annual total mass flux was $49.2g\;m^{-2}$. Biogenic materials including biogenic silica, organic matter, and carbonate accounted for about 67% of total particle flux, and lithogenic materials contributed about 29%. Biogenic silica was the most dominant (42% of the total flux) in these components. The next most important biogenic component was organic matter, comprising 24% of total mass flux. Calcium carbonate contributed a small fraction of total mass flux, only 0.6%. The annual organic carbon flux was $5.2g\;C\;m^{-2}$ at 1,034m water depth. The annual primary production was estimated to be $21.6g\;C\;m^{-2}$ at the sediment trap site, which seems to be highly underestimated. About 5.5% of the surface water production of organic carbon sinks below 1,034m water depth.
To study oscillation characteristic of steam and non-condensable gas direct contact condensation through multi-hole sparger at low mass flux, a series of experiments of pure steam and mixture gas condensation have been carried out under the conditions of steam mass flux of 20-120kg/m2s, water temperature of 20-95 ℃ and mass fraction of non-condensable gas of 0-5%. The regime map of pure steam condensation through multi-hole sparger is divided into steam chugging, separated bubble, aggregated bubble and escaping aggregated bubble. The bubbles behavior of synchronization in the same hole columns and desynchronized excitation between different hole columns can be found. The coalescence effect of mixture bubbles increases with water temperature and non-condensable gas content increasing. Pressure oscillation intensity of pure steam condensation first increases and then decreases with water temperature increasing, and increases with steam mass flux increasing. Pressure oscillation intensity of mixture gas condensation decreases with water temperature and non-condensable gas content increasing, which is significantly weaker than that of pure steam condensation. The oscillation dominant frequency decreases with the rise of water temperature and non-condensable gas content. The correlations for oscillation intensity and dominant frequency respectively are developed in pure steam and mixture gas condensation at low mass flux.
A model of simultaneous heat and mass transfer process in absorption of refrigerant vapor into a lithium bromide solution of water-cooled vertical plate absorber was developed. The model can predict temperature and concentration profiles as well as the absorption heat and mass fluxes, the total heat and mass transfer rates and the heat and mass transfer coefficients. Besides, the effect of operating condition on absorption mass flux has been investigated, with the result that the absorption mass flux is increased as the inlet cooling water temperature decreases, the system pressure increases and the inlet solution concentration increases. And among the effects of operating parameters on absorption mass flux, the effect of inlet solution concentration is dominant.
Sewage treatment plants located near to large cities emit extremely higher concentration of odorous materials. This study evaluated flux profiles of ammonia emitted from the water surface of sewage treatment plants using a dynamic flux chamber. Also, an ammonia overall mass transfer coefficient and a mass transfer model was developed in order to estimate fluxes of ammonia using environment parameters and the flux from the sewage treatment plants. The developed mass transfer model was evaluated through a fitness analysis. Comparison modeled flux applying empirical overall mass transfer coefficients of ammonia and measured ammonia flux show a high linearity with 0.977. The flux ratio of 1.282 demonstrated highly statistical fitness, also. Modeled flux using the mass transfer model was compared with measured flux. In result, it indicated that empirical overall mass transfer coefficients were similar to measured flux. The mass transfer model using the empirical overall mass transfer coefficient developed in this study was proved to be an easy and effective method to make accurate and precise predictions for ammonia flux discharged from sewage treatment plants.
The air and water flow distribution are experimentally studied for a round header - flat tube geometry simulating a parallel flow heat exchanger. The number of branch flat tube is thirty. The effects of tube outlet direction, tube protrusion depth as well as mass flux, and quality are investigated. The flow at the header inlet is identified as annular. For the downward flow configuration, the water flow distribution is significantly affected by the tube protrusion depth. For flush-mounted configuration, most of the water flows through frontal part of the header. As the protrusion depth increases, more water is forced to the rear part of the header. The effect of mass flux or quality is qualitatively the same as that of the protrusion depth. Increase of the mass flux or quality forces the water to rear part of the header. For the upward flow configuration, however, most of the water flows through rear part of the header. The protrusion depth, mass flux, or quality does not significantly alter the flow pattern. Possible explanations are provided based on the flow visualization results. Negligible difference on the water flow distribution was observed between the parallel and the reverse flow configuration.
The air and water flow distribution are experimentally studied for a heat exchanger composed of round headers and 10 flat tubes. The effects of tube protrusion depth as well as mass flux, and quality are investigated, and the results are compared with the previous 30 channel results. The flow at the header inlet is annular. For the downward flow configuration, the water flow distribution is significantly affected by the tube protrusion depth. For flush-mounted geometry, significant portion of the water flows through frontal part of the header. As the protrusion depth increases, more water is forced to the rear part of the header. The effect of mass flux or quality is qualitatively the same as that of the protrusion depth. Increase of the mass flux or quality forces the water to rear part of the header. For the upward flow configuration, different from the downward configuration, significant portion of the water flows through the rear part of the header. The effect of the protrusion depth is the same as that of the downward flow. As the protrusion depth increases, more water is forced to the rear part of the header. However, the effect of mass flux or quality is opposite to the downward flow case. As the mass flux or quality increases, more water flows through the frontal part of the header. Compared with the previous thirty channel configuration, the present ten channel configuration yields better flow distribution. Possible explanation is provided from the flow visualization results.
Membrane distillation (MD) is one of the water treatment processes which involves the momentum, heat and mass transfer through channels and membrane. In this study, CFD modeling has been used to simulate the heat and mass transfer in the direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD). Also, the effect of operating parameters on the water flux is investigated. The result shows a good agreement with the experimental result. Results indicated that, while feed temperature is increasing in the feed side, water flux improves in the permeate side. Since higher velocity leads to the higher mixing and turbulence in the feed channel, water flux rises due to this increase in the feed velocity. Moreover, results revealed that temperature polarization coefficient is rising as flow rate (velocity) increases and it is decreasing while the feed temperature increases. Lastly, the thermal efficiency of direct contact membrane distillation is defined, and results confirm that thermal efficiency improves while feed temperature increases. Also, flow rate increment results in enhancement of thermal efficiency.
A mechanistic model based on wall-attached bubble coalescence, previously developed by the authors, was extended to predict a vow high critical heat flux (CHF)in highly subcooled flow boiling, especially for high mass flux and small tube diameter conditions. In order to take into account the enhanced condensation due to high subcooling and high mass velocity in small diameter tubes, a mechanistic approach was adopted to evaluate the non-equilibrium flow quality and void fraction in the subcooled water flow boiling, with preserving the structure of the previous CHF model. Comparison of the model predictions against highly subcooled water CHF data showed relatively good agreement over a wide range of parameters. The significance of the proposed CHF model lies in its generality in applying over the entire subcooled flow boiling regime including the operating conditions of fission and fusion reactors.
In this study a method to predict CHF(Critical heat flux) in vertical round tubes with axially non-uniform cosine heat flux distribution for water was examined. For this purpose a local condition hypothesis based CHF prediction correlation for uniform heat flux in vertical round tubes for water was developed from 9,366 CHF data points. The local correlation consisted of 4 local condition variables: the system pressure(P), tube diameter(D), mass flux of water(G), and 'true mass quality' of vapor($X_t$). The CHF data points used were collected from 13 different published sources having the following operation ranges: 1.01 ${\leq}$ P (pressure) ${\leq}$ 206.79 bar, 9.92${\leq}$ G (mass flux) ${\leq}$ 18,619.39 $kg/m^2s$, 0.00102 ${\leq}$ D(diameter) ${\leq}$ 0.04468 m, 0.0254${\leq}$ L (length) ${\leq}$ 4.966 m, 0.11 ${\leq}$ qc (CHF) ${\leq}$ 21.41 $MVW/m^2$, and -0.87 ${\leq}X_c$ (exit qualities) ${\leq}$ 1.58. The result of this work showed that a uniform CHF correlation can be easily extended to predict CHF in axially non-uniform heat flux heater. In addition, the location of the CHF in axially non-uniform tube can also be determined. The local uniform correlation predicted CHF in tubes with axially cosine heat flux profile within the root mean square error of 12.42% and average error of 1.06% for 297 CHF data points collected from 5 different published sources.
