  • A railway rail will be corroded by the repetitive sea wind and fog in the splash and tidal zone such as Youngjong grand bridge. And these rusts of rail could be increased by increasing service period, and it frequently occurred the safety accidents or disorders in electrical problem. In this study, the sacrificial anode cathodic protection method was proposed as a measures for reducing the corrosion of the railway rails in the oceanic climate conditions. As the results of immersion test using the salt water during four months, the sacrificial anode cathodic protection method using the aluminum anode(Al-anode) was evaluated that a distinct effect on corrosion reduction in the rails. Therefore the sacrificial anode cathodic protection method was experimentally proven that a disorders in aspects electric and signal of railway operation condition such as direct fixation track system in Youngjong grand bridge could be prevented by reducing rust falling from the rail. In addition, the installation conditions of the anodes directly affect the transmission range of corrosion potential, the sectional loss of anode, and the corrosion reduction effect. Therefore, to expect the corrosion reduction effect of rails under the oceanic climate conditions for railway track, it was important to adopted the appropriate spacing of anode installation by considering the actual field conditions.

  • Design with crashworthiness concept has been emphasized for almost aircraft and motor vehicles. However, crashes accompanied serious injury and death have been continuously occurred, and will be occurred subsequently. What was worse, it is a well-known fact that there were a good many crashes classified as survivable accidents in which fatal injuries were reported. But we cannot say that fatal injuries were inevitable consequences of those crashes. If crashworthy design for seat, restraint systems, and cabin strength were adequate or right, survivability in a crash event could be maximized greatly. To substantiate the right crashworthiness, we must thoroughly understand the characteristics of human tolerance under abrupt acceleration change, and the cabin design should be combined with proper use of energy absorbing technologies that reduce accelerations experienced by the occupants. In this paper, the emphasis on the human tolerance under abrupt accelerations as well as the necessity of change in design requirements for crash environment will be stressed to widen the belt of consensus for the right crashworthy design.

  • There is growing interest in solar power generation due to global warming. As a result, demand for polysilicon, which is the core material for solar cells, is increasing day by day. As the market grows, large and small accidents occurred in the production process. In 2013, hydrochloric acid leaked from the polysilicon manufacturing plant in SangJu. In 2014, a fire occurred at a polysilicon manufacturing plant in Yeosu, and in 2015, STC(Silicon Tetrachloride) leaked at a polysilicon manufacturing plant in Gunsan City. Leakage of chemicals in the polysilicon manufacturing process can affect not only the workplace but also the surrounding area. Therefore, in this study, we identified the hazardous materials used in the polysilicon manufacturing process and quantitatively estimate the amount of leakage and extent of damage when the worst case scenario is applied. As a result, the damage distance by explosion was estimated to be 726 m, and the damage distance to toxicity was estimated to be 4,500 m. And, if TCS(Trichlorosilane), STC(Silicon Tetrachloride), DCS(Dichlorosilane) leaks into the air and reacts with water to generate HCl, the damage distance is predicted to 5.7 km.

  • Recently electric shock accidents constantly occurs caused by the street lamps. Especially the chance of electric shock accident is high when the street lamp submerges by heavy rainfall. Electric shock accident occurs mostly on the low voltage facilities of 220V, but the awareness of its danger is insufficient. The electric shock accident by street lamp voltage of 220V is very dangerous because it is installed in the street which is easily in contact with people. But there are insufficient investigation concerning the affect to hwnan body of underwater electric potential distribution as the distance changes from the leakage object in case of short circuit. In this thesis, the analysis will be made on the affect of underwater Earth leakage to human body and electric potential distribution in underwater, and to draw a comparison between electric shock channel and electric shock mechanism by experimenting on the affect to human body of underwater electric shock as the distance changes from the leakage object.

  • Recently, the safety of the coal-mining tunnels has been improved greatly, but accidents occur continually. Most tunnel support failures occur because the fish plate part that connects the I-beams is unable to withstand ground pressure. In the case of XX coal mine, the arch part of tunnel support bends to the upper direction. In such a case, excessive horizontal load as well as vertical load acts on the tunnel support. Horizontal load is caused by the sudden loosing of underground rock mass or the leakage of underground water, so it is fairly complex to predict horizontal loading on a tunnel support. To predict the horizontal load on this component is defined as the problem that determines the horizontal load conditions in wedges of tunnel support. This is an optimization problem in which maximum bending stress and horizontal load are considered by an objective function and design variables, respectively. Therefore, in this study, design of experiments and optimization algorithm were applied to identify the horizontal load in tunnel support.

  • Accident Tolerant Fuels have been widely studied since the Fukushima-Daiichi accident in 2011 as one of the options on how to further enhance the safety of nuclear power plants. Deposition of protective coatings on nuclear fuel claddings has been considered as a near-term concept that will reduce the high-temperature oxidation rate and enhance accidental tolerance of the cladding while providing additional benefits during normal operation and transients. This study focuses on experimental testing of Zr-based alloys coated with Cr-based coatings using Physical Vapour Deposition. The results of long-term corrosion tests, as well as tests simulating postulated accidents, are presented. Zr-1%Nb alloy used as nuclear fuel cladding serves as a substrate and Cr, CrN, CrxNy layers are deposited by unbalanced magnetron sputtering and reactive magnetron sputtering. The deposition procedures are optimized in order to improve coating properties. Coated as well as reference uncoated samples were experimentally tested. The presented results include standard long-term corrosion tests at 360℃ in WWER water chemistry, burst (creep) tests and mainly single and double-sided high-temperature steam oxidation tests between 1000 and 1400℃ related to postulated Loss-of-coolant accident and Design extension conditions. Coated and reference samples were characterized pre- and post-testing using mechanical testing (microhardness, ring compression test), Thermal Evolved Gas Analysis analysis (hydrogen, oxygen concentration), optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (EDS, WDS, EBSD) and X-ray diffraction.

  • Hyperlipidemia is a major predisposing factor of atherosclerosis and cerebrovascular accidents. In effort to develope a hypolipidemic drug from medicinal herb, We tested three prescriptions of traditional medicine for the lipid lowering effect on diet-induced hyperlipidemic rats. GyejI-Bokryung-Hwan, Ohyak-Sunki-San, and Shihoga-Yongol-Moryu-Tang were selected based on the comnon prescriptions for patients with hyperlipidemia-related diseases. Water extract from each prescriptions was made by the method used in the clinical setting, and administered intragastrically once a day, for 4 weeks. Fenofibrate and lovastatin were given by the same method as the control drugs. Blood levels of total cholesterol(TC), high density lipoprotein(HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), and triglyceride(TG) were measured before, 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks after starting the drug administration. All of the traditional prescriptions did not show lipid lowering effect, while fenofibrate lower the blood cholesterol levels(TC;from 215mg/dl before to 182m41 at 4 weeks-point of drug administration, and LDL ;from 203mg/dl before to aut 161, and 163mg/dl at 3 and 4 week-point respectively). Oyak-Sunki-San increased the level of TC (from 283mg/dl to over 350mg/dl starting from the first week of drug administratin). Effects on TG variable in the cases of traditional medicines and control drug In conclusion, any of the three traditional medical prescriptions did not decrease the level of blood cholesterol.

  • The recent Fukushima nuclear power plant accidents shows that the core make up at high RCS pressure condition is very important to prevent core melting. The core make up flow at high pressure condition should be driven by gravity force or passive forces because the AC-powered safety features are not available during a Station Black Out (SBO) accident. The reactor Coolant System (RCS) mass inventory is continuously decreased by releasing steam through the pressurizer safety valves after reactor trip during a SBO accident. The core will be melted down within 2~3 hours without core make up action by active or passive mode. In the new design concept of a Hybrid Safety Injection Tank (Hybrid SIT) both for low and high RCS pressure conditions, the low pressure nitrogen gas serves as a charging pressure for a LBLOCA injection mode, while the PZR high pressure steam provides an equalizing pressure for a high pressure injection mode such as a SBO accident. After the pressure equalizing process by battery driven initiation valve at a high pressure SBO condition, the Hybrid SIT injection water will be passively injected into the reactor downcomer by gravity head. The SBO simulation by MARS code show that the core makeup injection flow through the Hybrid SIT continued up to the SIT empty condition, and the core heatup is delayed as much.

  • Increase of marine transpotation in coastal area frequently yields oil spill accidents due to collision or grounding of oil tankers, which affects great deal of damages on ocean environments. Exact prediction of oil pollution area in time domain, which is called oil map, is very important for effective and efficient oil recovery and minimization of environmental damage. The prediction is carried out by considering the two distinct processes which are initial diffusion on the still water surface and advection due to tide, wind wave induced surface currents. In the present paper, only the initial diffusion is dealt with. Somewhat new simulation model and its numerical scheme are proposed to predict it. Simple diffusion experiment is also carried out to check the validity of the present method. Furthermore, some example simulations are performed for virtual oil spill accident. Quite realistic oil map including oil thickness distributions can be obtained by the present model.
