  • In this paper, warm asphalt binder was proposed as a substitute for the polymer-modified asphalt binder to get higher viscosity than that of the polymer-modified at the same temperature. Performance grade test and rotational viscosity of warm asphalt binder were conducted to evaluate the property variations due to the addition of admixture. Research results showed that the viscosity of warm asphalt binder at $100^{\circ}C$ was similar to that of the conventional asphalt binder. The performance and durability of warm asphalt binder were also comparable to those of the polymer-modified. It is considered that the active applications of warm asphalt binder can reduce environmental damages due to less diffusions of carbon dioxide compared to the conventional.

  • PURPOSES : This study aimed to analyze the experimental and numerical behavior of warm mix asphalt pavement prepared using steel slag and RAP and to conduct economic analysis of pavement construction. METHODS : For developing high performance asphalt pavement, we performed three evaluations: fundamental analysis, experimental testing, and 3D finite element analysis. In particular, 3D finite element analysis was conducted on several pavement structures by adopting the results of experimental tests. RESULTS : Through the various evaluations, it was established that steel slag was effective for use as asphalt mixture aggregate. Moreover, asphalt mixture constituting steel slag and RAP demonstrated higher performance behavior compared with conventionally used asphalt mixture. Furthermore, based on the 3D FE modeling, we established that the developed asphalt pavement constituting steel slag and RAP can be utilized for thin layer pavement with comparable performance behavior. CONCLUSIONS :Warm mix asphalt pavement prepared using steel slag and RAP is more competitive and economic compared to hot-mix asphalt pavement. Moreover, it can be applied for preparing thin layer asphalt pavements with reasonable performance. The developed warm mix asphalt pavement prepared using steel slag and RAP can be an alternative pavement type with competitive performance based on the reasonable economic benefit it provides.

  • To produce asphalt mixtures at temperature significantly below $135^{\circ}C$, called "Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA)", new technologies are currently being developed worldwide. To produce WMA mixtures in this research, foaming technology is adopted to effectively disperse asphalt binder at lower temperature than hot mix asphalt (HMA) in the field. The main objectives of this study are to develop WMA process using foaming technology (WMA-foam) and evaluate its performance characteristics under various temperatures and loading conditions. WMA-foam mixtures were produced by injecting PO 64-22 foamed asphalt into warm aggregates whereas WMA mixtures were produced by adding PO 64-22 asphalt (without foaming) in the warm aggregates. Both dynamic modulus and flow number of WMA-foam mixtures were higher than those of WMA mixtures. Based on the limited dynamic modulus and repeated load test results, it is concluded that the WMA-foam mixtures using warm aggregates at $100^{\circ}C$ are more resistant to fatigue cracking and rutting than WMA mixtures.

  • This study presents the test results on the compaction characteristics of warm mix asphalt mixtures that include the additive in 3 different mixtures(hot mix asphalt, SBS and SMA). The tests were conducted to find out the compaction characteristics on the compactability with varying compaction time, different amount of the warm mix additive and lowering the compaction temperature. The Superpave gyratory compactor was used to find out the variation of the density when the number of the gyration is varied. A dense mixture and 3 different warm mix additives were employed to find the relationship between compactability and compaction time. The comparison of the compactability with lowering the temperature was conducted using dense mixture, SBS polymer modified mixture and stone matrix asphalt mixture(SMA). The difference of the density of warm mix asphalt mixtures was not found due to the lowering of compaction temperature when it was compared with the standard mixture and the warm mix showed the stable condition in density. In the mean time, depending upon the different warm mix additive and mixture, the difference of density and the variation trend of compaction is found to be existed and shows the relationship between these two variables.

  • This study evaluated strength properties of recycled asphalt concretes using warm-mix technology. Granite with maximum size of 13mm and penetration grade of 80-100 virgin binder were used for mixing in recycled mixtures. Mix design was performed using 20% and 30% RAP(coarse : fine= 6 : 4) contents. GPC, penetration, absolute viscosity and kinematic viscosity were measured for determining ratio of two warm-mix additives (Evotherm and Sasobit). Low-density polyethylene(LD) used as asphalt modifier for improving stiffness of recycled WMA mixtures in this study. Therefore, a total of 11 mixtures were prepared in this study; 8 warm-mix recycled mixtures(2 RAP contents${\times}$2 warm-mix additives${\times}$2 modifiers), 2 hot-mix recycled mixtures and 1 HMA virgin mixture(control). Deformation strength, indirect tensile strength, moisture sensitivity, permanent deformation by wheel tracking tests were measured out for evaluating fundamental properties of recycled asphalt concretes using warm-mix technology.

  • PURPOSES : This research was a laboratory study for evaluating the Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) mixture added developed rejuvenator for warm mix recycling. Waste asphalt mixtures occupy about 18.2% of construction wastes in Korea. Moreover, most rejuvenators were imported from Europe or the U.S. Therefore, improving usage of RAP with a developed rejuvenator material provides environmental protection at a reduced cost. METHODS : The specimen used for this experiment was performed by only using RAP. A suitable rejuvenator for Target PG was then added. In addition, a conventional rejuvenator was selected to compare performance and specimens introduced with the same procedure as the developed rejuvenator was prepared. In order to evaluate rutting resistance and water susceptibility, we conducted a deformation strength test, a tensile strength ratio test, and a dynamic immersion test with the prepared mixtures. RESULTS :Laboratory test results indicated that both the developed additive and conventional additive improved performance of the recycled asphalt mixtures compared to mixtures without the rejuvenator. In addition, the deformation strength test and TSR test results satisfied standards for domestic recycling asphalt mixtures. The dynamic immersion test showed that the developed rejuvenator has superior scaling resistance than the conventional rejuvenator. CONCLUSIONS : In terms of rutting resistance and moisture susceptibility, the warm mix recycled asphalt mixtures with the developed rejuvenator appeared to effectively recovered performance.
