In this study, external condensation heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) of flammable refrigerants of propylene, propane, isobutane, butane, DME, and HFC32 were measured on a horizontal plain tube, 26 fpi low fin tube, and Turbo-C tube. All data were taken at the temperature of 39$^{\circ}C$ with a wall subcooling of 3∼8$^{\circ}C$. Test results showed a typical trend that condensation HTCs of flammable refrigerants decrease with increasing wall subcooling. HFC32 had the highest HTCs among the tested refrigerants showing 44% higher HTCs than those of HCFC22 while DME showed 28% higher HTCs than those of HCFC22. HTCs of propylene and butane were similar to those of HCFC22 while those of propane and isobutane were similar to those of HFC134a. Based upon the tested data, Nusselt's equation is modified to predict the plain tube data within a deviation of 3%. For 26 fpi low fin tube, Beatty and Katz equation predicted the data within a deviation of 7.3% for all flammable refrigerants tested. The heat transfer enhancement factors for the 26 fpi low fin and Turbo-C tubes were 4.6∼5.7 and 4.7∼6.9 respectively for the refrigerants tested indicating that the performance of Turbo-C tube is the best among the tubes tested.

A numerical study is made on the melting process of an unconstrained ice inside an isothermal ice-ball capsule. The unmelted ice core is continuously ascending on account of buoyancy forces. Such a buoyancy-assisted melting is commonly characterized by the existence of a thin liquid film above the ice core. The present study is motivated to present a full-equation-based analysis of the influences of the initial subcooling and the natural convection on the fluid flow associated with the buoyancy-assisted melting. In the light of the solution strategy, the present study is substantially distinguished from the existing works in that the complete set of governing equations in both the melted and unmelted regions are resolved in one domain. Numerical results are obtained by varying the wall temperature and initial temperature. The present results reported the transition of the flow pattern in a spherical capsule, as the wall temperature was increased over the density inversion point. In addition, time wise variation of the shapes for the liquid film and the lower ice surface, the time rate of change in the melt volume fraction and the melting distance at symmetric line is analyzed and is presented.

Experiments were carried out to investigate the condensation heat transfer characteristics for R22 and its alternatives, R407C (R32/125/134a, 23/25/52wt%) and R410A (R32/125, 50/50wt%). A concentric tube heat exchanger was made to conduct condensation heat transfer tests. Mass flux and saturation temperature of refrigerants at the test section inlet were varied to get the corresponding heat transfer coefficients. Serial and parallel input of secondary fluid (water) were applied to the test subsections. Compared with existing correlations of condensation heat transfer, experimental heat transfer coefficients obtained in this study were generally higher than the predicted values, and mean absolute deviations from several correlations were shown. Wall subcooling was introduced to get a new correlation for condensation heat transfer coefficients by modifying Shah's equation. The RMS deviation of the measured heat transfer coefficients from the new correlation in this study for R22 is 9.9% and that for R407C and R410A are 10.2% and 14.6%, respectively.

A new reliable method to prediet the axial vapor fraction distribution from the measured probability density of the liquid bulk temperature is suggested in this paper. And also the actual quality of the subcooled boiling flow is easily calculated from the liquid bulk temperature. When the heat generating rate is reached to the CHF value, the sharp wall temperature increasing by the wall temperature fluctuation is occurred under the CHF condition. This paper presents the simple wall temperature fluctuation model of transition boiling by the repeating process of overheating and quenching, when the coalescent bubble passes slowly near the wall. Experiments for the subcooled R-113 flow are carride-out in the range of(0.9399~4.461)${\times}10^6$kg/$m^2$hr mass velocity and 10~3$0^{\circ}C$ intel subcooling condition.
A multiphase CFD analysis is performed to investigate the effect of near-wall grid for simulating a subcooled boiling flow in vertical tube. The multiphase flow model used in this CFD analysis is the two-fluid model in which liquid(water) and vapor(steam) are considered as continuous and dispersed fluids, respectively. A wall boiling model is also used to simulate the subcooled boiling heat transfer at the heated wall boundary. The diameter and heated length of tube are 0.0154 m and 2 m, respectively. The system pressure in tube is 4.5 MPa and the inlet subcooling is 60 K. The near-wall grid size in the non-dimensional wall unit ($y_{w}^{+}$) was examined from 64 to 172 at the outlet boundary. The CFD calculations predicted the void distributions as well as the liquid and wall temperatures in tube. The predicted axial variations of the void fraction and the wall temperature are compared with the measured ones. The CFD prediction of the wall temperature is shown to slightly depend on the near-wall grid size but the axial void prediction has somewhat large dependency. The CFD prediction was found to show a better agreement with the measured one for the large near-wall grid, e.g., $y_{w}^{+}$ > 100.

The near-wall grid size in the non-dimensional wall unit for lqiuid phase ($y^+_{w,l}$) was examined from 101 to 313 at the outlet boundary. The CFD prediction was found to show a better agreement with the measured one for the large near-wall grid, e.g., $y^+_{w,l}$ > 300 at the tube exit.
A mechanistic model based on wall-attached bubble coalescence, previously developed by the authors, was extended to predict a vow high critical heat flux (CHF)in highly subcooled flow boiling, especially for high mass flux and small tube diameter conditions. In order to take into account the enhanced condensation due to high subcooling and high mass velocity in small diameter tubes, a mechanistic approach was adopted to evaluate the non-equilibrium flow quality and void fraction in the subcooled water flow boiling, with preserving the structure of the previous CHF model. Comparison of the model predictions against highly subcooled water CHF data showed relatively good agreement over a wide range of parameters. The significance of the proposed CHF model lies in its generality in applying over the entire subcooled flow boiling regime including the operating conditions of fission and fusion reactors.

To predict the fuel clad temperature during the reflooding phase of a LOCA, one may need a knowledge of reflood heat tranfer mechanism in a rod bundle. For this purpose reflooding experiments have been carried out with an electrically heated 3*3 rod bundle. Using the method for the determination of local heat transfer coefficient from the measured wall temperature the parametric effects of coolant flow rate, initial wall temperature, coolant subcooling and heat generation rate on the propagation of rewetting front were investigated. Prediction of the wall temperature histories for these experiments was discussed using REFLUX code with modification of the rewetting temperature correlation. Through this modification, better agreement between experiment and prediction was obtained.
A series of experiments have been carried out to investigate the effects of non-condensable gas on the direct contact film condensation of vapor mixture under an adiabatic wall condition. The average heat transfer coefficient of the direct contact condensation was obtained at the atmospheric pressure with four main parameters ; air-mass fraction, mixture velocity, film Reynolds number, and the degree of water film subcooling having an influence on the condensation heat transfer coefficient. With the analysis of 88 experiments, a correlation of the average Nusselt number for direct contact film condensation of steam/air mixture at an adiabatic vertical wall was proposed as functions of film Reynolds number, mixture Reynolds number, air mass fraction, and Jacob number. The average heat transfer coefficient for steam/air mixture condensation decreased significantly while air mass fraction increased. The average heat transfer coefficients also decreased as the Jacob number increased, and were scarcely affected by the film Reynolds number below a mixture Reynolds number of about 245,000.
An experimental study on heat transfer characteristics near the critical pressure has been performed with an internally-heated vertical annular channel cooled by R-134a fluid. Two series of tests have been completed: (a) steady-state critical heat flux (CHF) and (b) heat transfer tests for pressure reduction transients through the critical pressure. In the present experimental range, the steady-state CHF decreases with the increase of the system pressure For a fixed inlet mass flux and subcooling, the CHF falls sharply at about 3.8 MPa and shows a trend toward converging to zero as the pressure approaches the critical point of 4.059 MPa. The CHF phenomenon near the critical pressure does not lead to an abrupt temperature rise of the heated wall because the CHF occurred at remarkably low power levels. In the pressure reduction transient experiments, as soon as the pressure passed through the critical pressure, the wall temperatures rise rapidly up to a very high value due to the occurrence of the departure from nucleate boiling. The wall temperature reaches a maximum at the saturation point of the outlet temperature, then tends to decrease gradually.
