  • A hybrid central-WENO scheme is proposed. The fifth order WENO-LF scheme is coupled with a central flux scheme at cell face. Two sub-schemes, the WENO-LF scheme and the central flux scheme, are switched by a weighting function. The efficiency and accuracy of the proposed hybrid central-WENO scheme is validated through several numerical experiments.

  • It has passed the era of Full High Definition Television (FHD) and ended the era of Ultra High Definition Television (UHD). We will talk about the problems caused by the difference in the number of pixels in the TVs and introduce a method to improve them. This method is a method of performing an interpolation method suitable for a given image with Weighted Essential Non-Oscillation (WENO). Thus, it is possible to reduce the distortion of the image and to ensure a better image quality. Therefore, if we use the WENO methodology, when we watch old video material on UHD TV, we can enjoy high definition of UHD TV without changing the number of pixels.

  • Geochemical and Sr-Nd isotopic compositions and K-Ar ages are analyzed in volcanic rocks from Weno Island, Caroline Islands. Seven Weno lava samples of alkali basalt and basaltic trachyandesite are aphyric or sparsely phyric comprising olivine, plagioclase, and clinopyroxene phenocrysts. Whole-rock geochemical variation of Weno lavas reflects main fractional crystallization of olivine and Cr-spinel phenocrysts. Newly determined K-Ar ages of Weno lavas range from 6.7 to 11.3 Ma (late Miocene), indicating their formation during primary volcanic stage of Chuuk Islands. Trace element compositions of Weno lavas are very similar to those of typical ocean island basalts (OIBs), suggesting their formation during intra-plate mantle plume activity. The plume composition is isotopically very similar to that of Hawaiian hot spot. However, the age span of Chuuk volcanism is longer than that of the other individual volcanoes in the Pacific.

  • Motivated by the high-resolution properties of high-order Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory (WENO) and flux limiter (FL) for steep-gradient problems and the robust convergence of Jacobian-free Newton-Krylov (JFNK) methods for nonlinear systems, the preconditioned JFNK fully implicit high-order WENO and FL schemes are proposed to solve the transient two-phase two-fluid models. Specially, the second-order fully-implicit BDF2 is used for the temporal operator and then the third-order WENO schemes and various flux limiters can be adopted to discrete the spatial operator. For the sake of the generalization of the finite-difference-based preconditioning acceleration methods and the excellent convergence to solve the complicated and various operational conditions, the random vector instead of the initial condition is skillfully chosen as the solving variables to obtain better sparsity pattern or more positions of non-zero elements in this paper. Finally, the WENO_JFNK and FL_JFNK codes are developed and then the two-phase steep-gradient problem, phase appearance/disappearance problem, U-tube problem and linear advection problem are tested to analyze the convergence, computational cost and efficiency in detailed. Numerical results show that WENO_JFNK and FL_JFNK can significantly reduce numerical diffusion and obtain better solutions than traditional methods. WENO_JFNK gives more stable and accurate solutions than FL_JFNK for the test problems and the proposed finite-difference-based preconditioning acceleration methods based on the random vector can significantly improve the convergence speed and efficiency.

  • In this paper, we describe the application procedure of the adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) for the weighted essentially non-oscillatory schemes (WENO), and observe the effects of the derived algorithm when problems have piecewise smooth solutions containing discontinuities. We find numerically that the dissipation of the WENO scheme can be lessened by the implementation of AMR while the accuracy is maintained. We deduce from the experiments that the AMR-implemented WENO scheme captures shocks more efficiently than the WENO method using uniform grids.

  • Mesozooplankton samples were collected to investigate the spatial distribution in the Chuuk lagoon of the Federated States of Micronesia through three surveys from 2002 to 2004. Average temperature was $28.70^{\circ}C$ in August 2002, $30.17^{\circ}C$ in October 2003 and $29.18^{\circ}C$ in July 2004 at a water depth of 2rn. Average salinity was 33.95 psu in August 2002, 33.56 psu in October 2003 and 33.77 psu in July 2004. Total rnosozooplankton consisted of 70 taxa during the study period, among which copepods were the most diverse group. Foraminiferans, radiolarians, copepods and appendicularians, which comprised about 70% of total zooplankton abundance, were important components in the zooplankton community. Within the copepod group, Acartia spp., Centropages spp. and Undinula spp. were dominant in August 2002, Acartia spp., Centropages spp., and Oithona spp. in October 2003, and Acartia spp., Undinula spp., and Oithona spp. in July 2004. Total zooplankton abundance was high around Weno Island, while low in stations located in the northern part of Weno Island. High abundances of appendicularians were found in the southern part of weno Island as well as around Weno Island. Appendicularians foraminiferans, radiolarians, Sagitta spp. and immature copepods accounted for most of the distribution pattern of the mesozzoplankton community throughout the study area. These results suggest that appendicularians may be potential food items for fish larvae around Weno Island in the Chuuk lagoon states.

  • The high-order numerical method based on the adaptive mesh refinement(AMR) on the quadrilateral unstructured grids has been developed in this paper. This adaptive-grid method, originally developed with MUSCL-TVD scheme, is now extended to the WENO (weighted essentially no-oscillatory) scheme with the Runge-Kutta time integration of fifth order in spatial and temporal accuracy. The multidimensional interpolation was studied in the preliminary research, which allows us to maintain the same order of accuracy for the computation of numerical flux between two adjacent cells of different levels. Some standard benchmark tests are done to validate this method for checking the overall capacity and efficiency of the present adaptive-grid technique.

  • In this paper, a general Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory (WENO) interpolation is proposed and applied to a semi-Lagrangian method. The proposed method is based on the conservation law, and characteristic curves are used to complete the semi-Lagrangian method. Therefore, the proposed method satisfies conservation of mass and is free of the CFL condition which is a necessary condition for convergence. Using a several standard examples, the proposed method is compared with the third order Strong Stability Preserving (SSP) Runge-Kutta method to verify the high-order accuracy.

  • This paper is comparing numerical schemes for a differential equation with convection and fourth-order diffusion. Our model equation is $h_t+(h^2-h^3)_x=-(h^3h_{xxx})_x$, which arises in the context of thin film flow driven the competing effects of an induced surface tension gradient and gravity. These films arise in thin coating flows and are of great technical and scientific interest. Here we focus on the several numerical methods to apply the model equation and the comparison and analysis of the numerical results. The convection terms are treated with well known WENO methods and the diffusion term is treated implicitly. The diffusion and convection schemes are combined using a fractional step-splitting method.
