  • Using the pulsed current activated sintering method, the WC-10wt.% Co materials were densified using a WC and Co powder. The WC-Co almost completely dense with a relative density of up to 99.5 % after the simultaneous application of a pressure of 60 MPa and an electric current for 3 minutes almost without any significant change in the grain size. The average grain size of about $0.3{\mu}m$. The hardness and fracture toughness at $1000^{\circ}C$ were about $2200kg/mm^2$ and $9.8MPa.m^{1/2}$, respectively.

  • In this study, WC-l7wt% Co composite powder for thermal spray was fabricated by spray drying method. The agglomerated composite powder had spheroidal morphology and the particle size distribution was 20~60${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. WC and Co were distributed homogeneously. However, the strength of the spray-dried agglomerate was low due to the pores within the agglomerate. Therefore, the spray-dried agglomerate was broken down during HVOF thermal spray and the microstructure was inhomogeneous with many pores within the coating layer. And the decomposition of WC to W and $W_{6}$ $C_{2.54}$ was accelerated. The strength and flowability of the agglomerate were greatly improved by sintering heat treatment(110$0^{\circ}C$, 1 hour, hi atmosphere), and then the coating layer showed dense and homogeneous microstructure with well-developed splats. The hardness of the coating layer was H $v_{300}$ = 1072.2.2.

  • The development of new spraying processes has increased the demand for high quality protective coatings. Many thermal spraying processes have been developed to obtain coatings for a wide spectrum of materials and substrates. The plasma spray process was used to deposit coatings of WC-12%Co powders on mild steel substrate, and the characteristics of as-sprayed and vacuum heat treated coatings have been investigated. The variations of microhardness and bond strength in WC-12%Co coatings after heat treatment under vacuum circumstance have been investigated. The effects of phases and morphologies of WC-12%Co coatings have been investigated by utilizing X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The microhardness and bond strength of the coatings were increased with increasing the temperature in the temperature range of $700^{circ}C~1000^{\circ}C$. The bond strength was obtained 49 MPa after vacuum heat treatment at $1000^{\circ}C$.

  • The interfacial microstructure and bond strength were examined for WC-Co/Cu/SM45C steel join using a nickel-plated copper in vacuum at 1323K for 0.6ks∼3.6ks. After bonding, microstructure in bonding interface was observed by OM(Optical Microscopy), SEM(Scanning Electron Microscopy) and EPMA(Eelectron Probe Micro Analyzer). The oil cooling was carried out at 353K, the cooling rate in air and furnace was 22K/s and 4.4K/s. respectively. It was found that dendritic widths increased with the content of cobalt and bonding times at 1323K. As a whole, bond strength values at the same bonding condition decreased in this order: WC-13wt.%Co/SM45Csteel. WC-8wt.%Co/SM45Csteel and WC-4wt.%Co/SM45Csteel. The bond strength of WC-13wt.%Co/S45C steel joint in oil cooling was 273MPa. This value was greatly higher than those of 125MPa in furnace cooling and 93MPa in air cooling at 1323K for 0.6ks. The bond strength values were found to be closely associated with the content of cobalt in WC-Co and cooling rate.
