  • Recently, attempts have been made by dairy farms to shorten the time until the first estrus by feeding animals a high-energy diet during the heifer period. Energy consumption during the heifer period has been shown to be related to milk yield and reproductive performance. The present study was conducted to analyze the relationship between reproductive performance and energy intake in heifers. There were no differences in height or body weight between animals that were fed the Korean standard diet versus a high energy diet (110% of the Korean standard). However, there was a difference in the timing of the first estrus: 329.3 days under normal energy conditions versus 311 days under high energy conditions. There was no difference in the number of artificial insemination per gestation, but both the rate of female calf production and the weight of individual female calves increased in response to the high energy diet. Based on these results, it may be predicted that the reproductive performance of dairy cows will increase when the animals are fed a high energy diet (110% of the Korean standard). These results demonstrate a correlation between the amount of energy consumed and reproductive performance, and will be of great value to the dairy farming industry.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the accuracy of predictive equations for resting metabolic rate (RMR) in Korean college students. Subjects were 60 healthy Korean college students (30 males, 30 females) aged 18-25 years. RMR was measured by indirect calorimetry. Predicted RMRs were calculated using the Harris-Benedict, Schofield (W)/(WH), FAO/ WHO/UNU(W)/(WH), Owen, Mifflin, Cunningham, Liu, IMNA and Henry (W)/(WH) equations. The accuracy of the equations was evaluated on basis of accurate prediction (the percentage of subjects whose RMR was predicted within 90% to 110% of the RMR measured), mean difference, RMSPE, mean % difference, limits of agreement of Bland- Altman method between predicted and measured RMR. Measured RMR of male and female students were $1833.4{\pm}307.4kcal/day$ and $1454.3{\pm}208.0kcal/day$, respectively. All predictive equations underestimated measured RMR. Of the predictive equations tested, the Harris-Benedict equation (mean difference: -80.4 kcal/day, RMSPE: 236 kcal/day, mean % difference: -3.1%) was the most accurate and precise, but accurate prediction of the equation was only 42%. Thus, this study suggests that the ethnicity-specific predictive equation from Korean people should be developed to improve the accuracy of predicted RMR for Koreans. • In this part of the studies on dielectric dehydration of foamed fish-starch paste, quality stability and shelflife of the product of which the preparation formula and processing conditions were described in the previous report (Lee et at., 1982) were determined by means of accelerated reaction test. The product was stored for 50 days under the conditions of temperatures at 35, 45, and 55$^{\circ}C$ in steady state and various water activities of 0.44, 0.52, 0.65, and 0.75, respectively. The loss of available lysine, the extent of TBA value, and the development of browning during the storage were measured and reaction kinetically analysed to assess quality stability and shelf-life of the product for the storage at room temperature of 25$^{\circ}C$. The extent of browning was accelerated with the increase of water activity and temperature marking the time to reach a limit of color and flavor deterioration, or to reach brown color density of 0.17 O.D./g at 420nm, 106 days at a$\_$w/=0.44, 35$^{\circ}C$, and 41 days at aw=0.65, 55$^{\circ}C$. These reaction rates resulted in a prediction of shelf-life, 130 to 110 days in the storage at au=0.44 to 0.75, 25$^{\circ}C$. The quality limit assessed by TBA values and sensory evaluation of rancidity was 87 days at a$\_$w/=0.44, 35$^{\circ}C$, and 30 days at aw=0.73, 55$^{\circ}C$ which gave a predicted shelf-life, 128 to 113 days at a$\_$w/=0.44 to 0.75, 25$^{\circ}C$ storage.

  • CuS thin films were deposited on glass substrates at room temperature by RF magnetron sputtering. The structural and optical properties of CuS thin films grown by varying RF-power from 40 W to 100 W were studied. From the XRD analysis, we confirmed hexagonal crystal structures grown in the preferred orientation of the (110) plane in all CuS thin films, and the intensity of the main diffraction peak increased in proportion to the increase of RF-power. In the case of CuS thin film deposited at 40W, small-sized particles formed a thin and dense surface morphology with narrow pore spacing, relatively. As the power increased, the grain size and grain boundary spacing increased sequentially. The peaks for the binding energy of Cu 2p3/2 and Cu 2p1/2 were determined at 932.1 eV and 952.0 eV, respectively. The difference in binding energy for the Cu2+ states was the same at 19.9 eV regardless of process parameters. The transmittance and band gap energy in the visible region tended to decrease with increasing sputtering powers.

  • This survey was conducted to investigate the situation of three types of laying hen houses and farmers' awareness of farm automation. Six windowless, three high-rising windowless and four open-sided laying hen houses were surveyed to compare their characteristics, and sixty farmers answered questionnaires. 1. Population density of laying hen was 13.9 birds/m^2$ in open-sided, 28.9 birds/m^2$ in high-rising windowless, and 44.9 birds/m^2$ in windowless laying hen houses. 2. Feeder space was $12{\sim}13.5cm$ in open-sided laying hen houses, but feeder space of windowless and high-rising hen houses was narrower than that of open-sided laying hen houses. 3. Thermal resistance values were $14.6{\sim}18.7\;m^2\;{\circ}C/W$ in wall, #22.0{\sim}23.7\;m^2\;{\circ}C/W$ in roof of windowless and high-rising windowless laying hen houses but the wall of open-sided laying hen houses was only $1.9\;m^2\;{\circ}C/W$. 4. Maximum ventilation capacity was 0.161{\sim}0.326$ cmm/bird in summer. Minimum rate of tunnel Ventilation laying hen houses in winter was $0.013{\sim}0.040$ cmm/bird, but minimum rate of crossflow and high-rising windowless laying hen houses was larger than that of tunnel ventilation houses. 5. One person managed about 8,100 birds in open-sided, and about 23,500 birds in windowless and high-rising windowless laying hen houses. 7. 90.7% of farmers responsed that they want to construct automatized laying hen houses in the future.

  • Purple non-sulfur (PNS) bacterium $Rhodobacter$ $sphaeroides$ KD131 was studied with the aim of achieving maximum hydrogen production using various carbon and nitrogen sources at different pH conditions. Cells grew well and produced hydrogen using $(NH_4){_2}SO_4$ or glutamate as a nitrogen source in combination with a carbon substrate, succinate or malate. During 48h of photo-heterotrophic fermentation under 110$W/m^2$ illumination using a halogen lamp at $30^{\circ}C$, 67% of 30mM succinate added was degraded and the hydrogen yield was estimated as 3.29mol $H^2$/mol-succinate. However, less than 30% of formate was consumed and hydrogen was not produced due to a lack of genes coding for the formate-hydrogen lyase complex of strain KD131. Initial cell concentrations of more than 0.6g dry cell weight/L-culture broth were not favorable for hydrogen evolution by cell aggregation, thus leading to substrate and light unavailability. In a modified Sistrom's medium containing 30mM succinate with a carbon to nitrogen ratio of 12.85 (w/w), glutamate produced 1.40-fold more hydrogen compared to ammonium sulfate during the first 48h. However, ammonium sulfate was 1.78-fold more effective for extended cultivation of 96h. An initial pH range from 6.0 to 9.0 influenced cell growth and hydrogen production, and maintenance of pH 7.5 during photofermentation led to the increased hydrogen yield.

  • To investigate the catches of jack mackerel fishery, a series of fishing experiments was conducted in the high seas of the southeastern Pacific Ocean ($30^{\circ}S-38^{\circ}S,\;82^{\circ}W-95^{\circ}W$) during the period of 9 August to 18 December, 2003 by commercial fishing vessel and research vessel. The number of 205 tows fishing was carried out in the southeastern Pacific Ocean. The total catch was 1,988 ton and CPUE was 2.4 ton/hour. CPUE showed high values in the frontal zone during the survey. Main target species caught from the experimental fishing were the jack mackerel, Trachurus murphyi (98.1%) and chub mackerel, Scomber japonicus (1.9%) as bycatch. Body length of the jack mackerel was different between female and male. The high mean catch per unit effort of jack mackerel was showed when the fishing ground of jack mackerel fishery was over the $110^{\circ}W$ in the southeastern Pacific Ocean. But the fluctuation of the catch per unit effort in the western part of fishing ground was not matched with those year. Reliable physical and oceanographical information will be useful for the efficiency of fishing activity. According to the result of monthly movement of center of fishing ground, the fishing activity of jack mackerel fishery was performed northward in the southeastern Pacific Ocean as time passes.

  • The horizontal and vertical distribution of yellowfin tuna, Thunnus albacares (Bonnaterre) and bigeye tuna, Tunnus obesus (Lowe) in relation to oceanic conditions such as thermal structure produced during El Nino/La Nina episodes were analyzed on the basis of data sets for the catches and efforts from the Korean tuna longline fishery and for the oceanographic observations from the NOAA during 1982-2002 in the tropical Pacific. The high density of fishing ground appeared in the western Pacific ($5^{\circ}N-5^{\circ}S,\;160^{\circ}E-180^{\circ}W$) for yellowfin tuna and in the eastern Pacific ($5^{\circ}N-15^{\circ}S,\;130^{\circ}W-100^{\circ}W$) for bigeye tuna. yellowfin and bigeye tunas were mainly distributed at the 110-250 m layer and 245-312 m layer, respectively, in the western Pacific. However, in the eastern Pacific, they were mostly caught at the 116-161 m and 205-276 m layer for yellowfin tuna and bigeye tuna, respectively. It can be suggested that bigeye tuna be distributed in the deepest layer among tunas and show a vertical size stratification. It was observed that during the El Nino events the main fishing ground of yellowfin tuna shifted from the western Pacific toward the eastern Pacific. In the eastern Pacific which showed a higher density of bigeye tuna, the vulnerability of bigeye tuna caught by deep longline increased during the El Nino events due to deepening of thermocline layer and a more intensively distribution of the fish schools in the lower layer of thermocline during the El Nino events.

  • Purpose: Blepharoptosis is often associated with telecanthus and the presence of epicanthal fold in telecanthus is one of unique features in Asian eyelids. The purpose of this article is to define telecanthus and pseudotelecanthus, and to determine optimal surgical procedure depending on classification of telecanthus. Methods: Among 187 patients with blepharoptosis who had the advancement procedure of the Muller's musclelevator aponeurosis composite flap for ptosis, 55 patients underwent Flowers' split V-W plasty concomitantly with shortening the medial canthal tendon for correction of telecanthus from September 2003 to January 2011. Among them, 52 patients were followed up for 16 months. We newly defined telecanthus because Mustarde ratio is inaccurate to measure in certain cases and then made a definition of pseudotelecanthus. Besides, we also classified telecanthus into mild, moderate and severe types based on its severity. Results: Telecanthus is defined when the ICD (inner canthal distance) is greater than 110% of normal ICD. Pseudotelecanthus is a telecanthus like a wide skin bridge formed between the eyes because of the epicanthal fold in the normal ICD. Flowers' split V-W plasty combined with shortening medial canthal tendon was very effective in mild and moderate telecanthus with almost invisible scar and no recurrence occurring. In severe types, however, it showed high incidence (28%) of incomplete correction of telecanthus. Conclusion: New definition of telecanthus can be easily applied to any case and we think the classification of telecanthus is useful to select an appropriate operative procedure. Split V-W plasty with shortening of medial canthal tendon is a very effective procedure in mild and moderate telecanthus. Besides, it is also effective in improving the treatment outcomes of ptosis in cases of blepharoptosis associated with telecanthus.

  • Seasonal development of Parthenolecanium corni was observed from 4 Jun. 2019 (nymph) - 25 Jun. 2020 (1st Gen. nymph) in blueberry shrub in Sacheon city, Gyeongsangnam-do. To investigate their development, more than 5 twigs sprouted in 2018 were taken from the farm nearly weekly basis. The development of each scale were examined under the stereomicroscope and chemical control was conducted in the blueberry shrub with available three insecticides. The results on the development period and Centigrade Degree-Days accumulation (DDC) obtained are as follows: egg-laying period (peak): 12 -26 May 2020 (24 May)(DDC, 110.0-188.5 (173.6)); egg-hatching period (peak): 9 - 23 June 2020 (19 June)(DDC, 325.2-480.8(435.6); egg period: 26 days; nymph movement from overwintered adult to new leaves 16-25 June 2020 (DDC, 410,5-500.4); nymph movement from leaf to twig (peak) to become adult: 4-18 Feb. 2020 (8 Feb.). Eggs no. /adult (range): 956.8 ± 73.4 (13 - 3497). Size (mm) of egg, 0.29 ± 0.020(L), 0.15 ± 0.013(W); of egg-hatched nymph, 0.35 ± 0.018(L), 0.18 ± 0.007(W), 0.09 ± 0.007(eye distance); and of adult, 4.30 ± 0.893(L), 2.64 ± 0.520(W). The egg-hatched nymphs from the overwintered adult moved to the backside leaf of new shoot in which they found about 95% until leaf is falling by early February in next year. They overwintered as 2nd instar and occurred univoltine. For the control of the 1st instar crawler, three insecticides treated on 16 and 30 July at the registered dose for Ceroplastes japonicus. Acetamiprid 8WP showed 96.9% mortality at 21 days after 1st treatment.
