PIV experiments were carried out to visualize the velocity distribution of the sweeping jet impinging onto a flat plate and kinematic behavior of the jet from the fluidic oscillator. Two parameters such as four different Re cases and four different jet-to-wall distances were examined. Time-resolved two dimensional PIV measurements were performed for both streamwise and normal planes respect to the jet axis. Ensemble averaged and phase averaged velocity fields were obtained for the tested range of parameters. The sweeping frequency of the jet increases linearly with increase of Re. The kinetic energy of the sweeping jet decreases as the distance from the jet to the impinging plate increases. In addition, turbulence flow is generated due to the swinging motion of sweeping jet, and various vortices such as primary and secondary vortex are observed near the impinging wall.
The characteristic of jet impinging on the concave surface were analyzed through thermographic phosphor thermometry (TPT) and numerical investigation. Under a jet Reynolds number of 6600, nozzle diameters and nozzle-to-surface distances (H/d) were changed 5mm and 10mm and H/d=2 and 5. The RNG k-ε turbulence model can accurately predict the distribution of Nusselt number, compared to other models (SST k-ω, realizable k-ε). Heat transfer characteristics varied with the nozzle diameter and H/d, with a secondary peak noted at H/d =2, due to vortex-induced flow detachment and reattachment. An increase in nozzle diameter enhanced jet momentum, turbulence strength, and heat transfer.
This work presents a numerical investigation of the aerodynamics and aero acoustics of the HVAB rotor in hover conditions. Two fully turbulent models are employed, the one-equation Spalart-Allmaras model and the two-equation k-ω SST model. Transition effects are investigated as well using the Langtry-Menter γ-Re θt transition transport model. The noise generation and propagation are being investigated using the Ffows-Williams Hawking model for far-field noise and the broadband model for near-field noise. Comparisons with other numerical solvers and with the PSP rotor test data are presented. The results are presented in terms of thrust and power coefficients, the figure of merit, surface pressure distribution, and Sound pressure level. Velocity, pressure, and vortex structures generated by the rotor are also shown in this work. In addition, this work investigates the contribution of different blade regions to the overall noise levels and emphasizes the importance of considering specific areas for future improvements.

The climate change occurring all over the world increases the risk, specially in urban area, Accordingly, rainwater pumping station expansion is required than before. In order to increase the efficiency of the rainwater pumping station, the analysis of flow characteristics in the pump sump is needed for vortex control. Many efforts have been made to illuminate the vortex behavior using PIV, but any reliable results have not been obtained yet, because of the limitations in image capturing and dependency of measured velocity values on the interrogation area and time interval used for velocity calculation. In this study, therefore, experiments were carried out to find out the limitation of PIV and estimate the validation of the velocity values associated with the analysis parameters such as interrogation area, time interval, grid size. For the experimental condition used in this study, the limitation of PIV and the effects of parameters on the velocity estimation are presented.

Visualization was done by using $CH^*$ chemiluminescence images and PMT measurements in order to understand the origin of fluctuating pressure and chemical luminosity at about 500 Hz frequency even in stable combustion, which was observed in recent experimental tests, and to find the physical correlation leading to Low Frequency Instability(LFI) in terms of phase angle. In stable combustion, chemical reactions are distributed along the shear layer flow showing a negative coupling(about 180 degree in phase angle) with combustion pressure. However, phase difference is shifted to a positive coupling showing less than 90 degree in unstable case. Also a periodic change in the distribution of chemical reactions is observed along with local flame extinction and the appearance of big scale vortex flow. In the transition to LFI, local flame extinction and small vortex flow start to appear in a row. As seen in the bluff body wake in reactive flow, the periodic appearance of vortex flow seems to share the same physical process of BVK(Bernard Von Karman) instability generation. Thus, the appearance of local extinction in 500 Hz fluctuations is gradually amplified to complete extinctions of about 20 Hz, and it leads into LFI.
The change of the vorticity and the temperature distribution in heat exchanger tube bank were analyzed for the flows with the constant inlet velocity and the sinusoidal inlet velocity. The flow frequency characteristics were examined by analyzing power spectral density of lift and drag at a typical circular tube in the tube bank. Karman vortex street could be seen at the upstream region of tube bank for the case of constant inlet velocity. It could be seen that the Karman vortex street was affected by the change of inlet velocity near the circular tubes for the case with the sinusoidal inlet velocity. It was observed that the unsteady temperature distributions for both inlet velocity conditions had almost the same motion as the flow vorticity behavior. The flow frequency for the case with the constant inlet velocity is 37.25Hz, and that with the sinusoidal inlet velocity, the flow frequency is 18.63Hz, which is equal to the sinusoidal inlet velocity. The mean surface Nusselt number(Nu) for overall heat exchanger tube bank was 1051 for the case with the constant inlet velocity and 1117 for the case with the sinusoidal inlet velocity. From the result of heat transfer analysis, it could be seen that Nu with the sinusoidal inlet velocity showed 6.3% increase than that with the constant inlet velocity.

In this paper, the results gained by applying many impingement models to the cylinder and flat plate were analyzed in comparison with the experimental data to study a spray/wall interaction phenomena. To begin with, the behavior of spray injected normal to the wall was analysed using three different impingement models ; Naber and Reitz model(NR model), Watkins and Wang model(WW model) and Park and Watkins model(PW model) in the present calculation. The results obtained from these models were compared with experimental data of Katsura et. al. The results indicated that PW model was in better agreement with experimental data than the NR and WW model. Also f3r spray injected at 30DEG , the result of three models were compared with experimental data of Fujimoto et. al. The results showed that m model overpredicted the penetration in the radial direction because this model was based on the inviscid jet analogy. WW model did not predicted the radius and height of the wall spray effectively. It might be thought that this discrepancy was due to the lack of consideration of spray film velocity occurred at impingement site. The result of PW model agrees with the experimental data as time goes on. In particular, a height of the spray droplets was predicted more closely to the experimental data than the other two models. The results of PW model in which the spray droplets were distributed densely around the edge of droplet distribution shaped in a circle had an agreement with the experimental data of Fujimoto et. al. Therefore, it was concluded that PW model performed better than M and WW model for prediction of spray behavior. The numerical calculation using PW model performed to the cylinder similar to the real shape of DI engine. The results showed that vortex strength near the wall in the cylinder was stronger than that in the case of flat plate. Contrary to the flat plat, an existence of the side wall in the cylinder caused the tangential velocity component to be reduced and the normal velocity component to be increased. The flow tends to rotate to the inside of cylinder going upward to the right side wall of cylinder gradually as time passes. Also, the results showed that as the spray angle increases, the gas velocity distribution and the tumble flow seemed to be formed widely.

The purpose of this study was to determine the optimal distances between pipes to minimize the pressure loss and turbulent intensity. This was accomplished by investigating the distances between sleeve-jointed pipes and the flow changes in pipes based on variations in the Reynolds (Re) number when installing adjusting pieces for the pipes. When the thickness tp of the sleeve-jointed piping was fixed at 5 mm and the pipe lengths Lp were 10, 50, 100, and 200 mm, the correlations with the velocity of the sleeve-jointed part, pressure distribution, length of the reattachment point in the recirculation area, and Re number were analyzed. The flow characteristic of the sleeve-jointed part from a laminar to a turbulent flow region was determined by setting the Re range to 200 ≤ Re ≤ 5,000. This was done by utilizing Ansys Fluent 18.1, which is a commercial program. The enlargement and contraction ratios of the sleeve-jointed part were 1.2 and 0.83, respectively, and the turbulent intensity of the sleeve downstream edge and pressure change both increased as the Re number increased while Lp remained constant. The fact that the flow on the sleeve wall surface was disturbed by tp resulted in losses in velocity energy. Therefore, the edge of the sleeve-jointed part was also effected. When Lp was 10 mm or less, the turbulent intensity of the edge part did not change significantly as the Re number increased. The reattachment point in the recirculation area did not appear at Lp of 10 mm or less and was not affected by the vortex. In the case of 3,000 ≤ Re, the reattachment length of the wall surface of the sleeve-jointed part was nearly constant as Lp increased.

In this study, hydraulic and numerical model experiments were performed to analyze and improve the effects of flow-rate increase in the intake canal of Boryeong Thermal Power Plants on the flow condition in the circulation water pump (CWP) chambers. Based on the numerical simulation results, when the flow-rate increased in the circulation water intake canal, the velocity in the canal and vertical vorticities in the circulation water pump chambers increased and hence the vortex occurrence potential would be greatly increased. It was found by performing hydraulic model experiments that the velocity distribution near the bottom in the inlet of the circulation water pump chambers was highly non-uniform while the velocity distribution near the water surface was nearly uniform. To reduce the non-uniformity in the velocity distribution, triangular flow deflectors were devised. The installation of the flow deflectors in the inlet of circulation water pump chambers was successfully to reduce velocity non-uniformities and to remove flow reversal problems.
The importance of shear thinning non-Newtonian blood rheology on the hemodynamic characteristics of idealized cerebral saccular aneurysms were investigated by carrying out CFD simulations assuming two different non-Newtonian rheology models (Carreau and Ballyk models). To explore effects of vessel curvature, a straight and a curved vessel geometry were considered. The wall shear stress(WSS), relative residence time(RRT) and velocity distribution were compared at the different phases of cardiac cycle. As expected, blood entered the aneurysm at the distal neck and created large vortex in both aneurysms, but with higher momentum on the curved vessel. Hemodynamic characteristics such as WSS, and RRT exhibited only minor effects by choice of different rheological models although Ballyk model produced relatively higher effects. We conclude that the assumption of Newtonian fluid is reasonable for studies aimed at quantifying the hemodynamic characteristics, in particular, WSS-based parameters, considering the current accuracy level of medical image of cerebral aneurysm.
