  • In this study, steady/unsteady aerodynamic characteristic for three dimensional symmetric wing was investigated numerically using Vortex Panel Method. This program utilized linearly varying vortices in x and y directions distributed on the wing surface and was applied to the incompressible potential. flow around a three dimensional wing Separation and deformation of the wake are not considered. The comparison between NACA Airfoil Data and the computed results showed excellent agreement. πus method was applied to unsteady wings undergoing both sudden pitch-up and constant rate pitching motion. In the unsteady flow analysis, a formation and a time-dependent locations of Starting Vortices are considered and the effect of Starting Vortices on aerodynamic characteristic of the wing was calculated. The present method can be extended to apply for more complicated cases such as pitching, flapping and rotating wing analysis.

  • The Vortex-In-Cell(VIC) method combined with panel method is applied to the analysis of incompressible unsteady viscous flow. The dynamics of resulting flow is governed by the vorticity transport equation in Lagrangian form with vortex particle representation of the flow field. A regular grid which is independent to the shape of a body is used for numerical evaluation based on immersed boundary technique. With an introduction of this approach, the development and validation of the VIC method is presented with some computational results for incompressible viscous flow around two or three dimensional bodies such as wing section, sphere, finite wing and marine propeller.

  • Vortex shedding which is the dominant feature of body wakes and of direct relevance to practical engineering problems, has been intensively studied for flows past a circular cylinder. In contrast, vortex shedding from a hydrofoil trailing edge has been studied to much less extent despite numerous practical applications. The physics of the problem is still poorly understood. The present study deals with $K{\acute{a}}rm{\acute{a}}n$ vortex shedding from a truncated trailing-edge hydrofoil in relatively high Reynolds number flows. The objectives of this paper are twofold. First, we aim to simulate unsteady turbulent flows past a two dimensional hydrofoil through a hybrid particle-mesh method and penalization method. The vortex-in-cell (VIC) method offers a highly efficient particle-mesh algorithm that combines Lagrangian and Eulerian schemes, and the penalization method enables to enforce body boundary conditions by adding a penalty term to the momentum equation. The second purpose is to investigate shedding frequencies of vortices behind a NACA 0009 hydrofoil operating at a zero angle of attack.

  • Characteristics of the vortex structure and the secondary scour at downstream part of the hydraulic structure such as drainage sluice or spillway ere studied. Mean shear velocity in the scour hole could be derived by the theory of energy conservation and the amount of a vortex erosion could be obtained using entrainment equation for given value of a shear velocity. Comparison of erosion rates with others showed a large value at low shear velocity due to the continuous and strong upward flow of the macroturbulence different from the conventional vortex formed in the lee-side of a sand ripple. For a design purpose, if the flow depth at the end of an apron and the properties of bed material are given, the amount of vortex erosion can be known.

  • The authors propose to use the vortex generators in order to improve of the efficiency for the cambered otter boards. The equipments and testing method of this model test was the same as the previous report. This study was tested for 6 models such as the single cambered, the V-shaped cambered and the slotted cambered otter board without and with vortex generators. The results obtained are as follows: \circled1 C sub(L) of the single cambered model otter board with vortex generators was increased about 10% in comparison with that of model without vortex generators, C sub(D) decreased 2%, and L/D increased 5~20%. \circled2 L/D of the V-shaped cambered model otter board with vortex generators was increased 10~20% in comparison with that of model without vortex generators. \circled3 C sub(L) of the two slotted cambered model otter board with vortex generators was increased about 20% within an angle of attack 25$^{\circ}$ in comparison with that of without vortex generators, C sub(D) increased 5~20%, and L/D was higher than prototype within an angle of attack 20$^{\circ}$. \circled4 The separation point of the model otter boards with vortex generators was removed back ward a little in comparison with that of the model without vortex generators. \circled5 Flow speed difference of the back side to the front side of model otter boards with vortex generators was increased a little in comparison with that of the models without vortex generators. \circled6 The size of separation zone in case of the model otter boards with vortex generators was decreased about 10% in comparison with that of the models without vortex generators.

  • The vortex cup is proposed as a method to transport sensitive products such as silicon wafers in manufacturing. Air through the inlet nozzle located at the top of the vortex cup flows to form a swirl in the cylinder. The flow located in the lower part of the thin gap between the vortex cup and the bottom surface escapes and generates a negative pressure that can lift objects. In this research, three-dimensional numerical simulation of the air flow field in a vortex cup is performed, and a comparison of the simulation and experimental results shows very good agreement. In addition, the vortex cup length and shape that affect the negative pressure were applied to the analysis. Through the simulation results, optimum conditions for the vortex cup shape were proposed.

  • A numerical method was developed to solve the Navies-Stokes equations for unsteady laminar flow around a hydrofoil. The present method used the finite-difference scheme in the collocated grid system and the pressure-Poisson method was employed to obtain divergence-free velocity field each time step. The numerical method was applied at first to laminar flow around a circular cylinder to confirm capability of the code. In the next, calculations were carried out for a hydrofoil in an unbounded fluid at the Reynolds number of $10^4$ in order to investigate unsteady phenomena with vortex shedding. The calculate results showed reasonable features about laminar vortex shedding around a streamlined body.

  • In this paper a method for finding solution of acoustic, vortex and entropy wave-equations in a cylindrical tube with variable section area was suggested under the consideration of that the high frequency instability in a rocket engine combustion chamber is an acoustic phenomena, which is coupled with combustion reaction, and that a combustion chamber and exhaust nozzle are usually shaped cylindrically. As a consequence of that some method, which enable the quantitative analysis of the influence of entropy and vortex waves to acoustic wave, was suggested.

  • The boundary layer flow under a sluice gate is numerically solved by the random vortex sheet method combined with the vortex-in-cell method in a boundary-fitted coordinate system. The numerical solution shows that the boundary layer developed along the vertical sluice gate wall is the primary cause for the discrepancy in the contraction ratio between the laboratory experiments and inviscid theory; the bottom boundary layer plays much a smaller role in the discrepancy. By dimensional analysis it is concluded that the discrepancy is inversely proportional to the 3/4th power of the gate opening, as analyzed by Benjamin(1956). The results of the numerical simulation and dimensional analysis show a good agreement with experimental results obtained by Benjamin(1956).

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient technique for improving the grid based fluid simulation by sub-grid visuals. The detailed turbulency generated efficiently by Vortex Particle Method are blended with the flow fields coming from the traditional incompressible Navier-Stokes solver. The algorithm enables large- and small- scale detail to be edited separately.
