  • This qualitative study explores how volunteering to help in early childhood education is conceptualized from the perspectives of three parties involved; university students, university professors, and principals as well as teachers, and children‘s mothers from a local daycare center and a kindergarten. Data was collected through journals, interviews, and several other artifacts, such as student portfolios, and letters from mothers. Findings were as follows: firstly, preservice early childhood teachers defined voluntary activity in early childhood education as a service that requires motivation and responsibility, and as an activity that helps to establish their identities as teachers. Secondly, university professors constructed the system for service learning activities and helped preservice early childhood teachers’ change the view from volunteering activity to volunteering learning. Thirdly, the local community referred to these activities in terms of the partnerships made for children‘s education and the possibility of cooperative childcare. The findings of this study describe the perspectives of parties involved and may be helpful in planning and executing specialized volunteer projects as well as in understanding volunteer behavior.

  • In this study, we revisit an empirical literature has found that neighborhood income inequality lowers people's likelihood of contributing public goods in terms of volunteering. We contribute to the literature by explicitly addressing the issues of larger and improper neighborhood choice with a census-type data and endogenous neighborhood location with some unique features of 2009 Social Survey Data by Statistics Korea. The results have confirmed that income heterogeneity lowers people's volunteering.

  • Volunteering has been defined as a form of altruistic helping behavior directed at improving other's welfare. Volunteering is, however, also identified as a type of collective action for community welfare. In this regard, this study tests whether neighborhood member's network and collective identity are more important determinants to explain participation in volunteer work than altruistic or normative motivation. This study estimates a model in which volunteering is determined by empathy, normative beliefs, neighborhood networks(friendship, contacts, and integration), and identity as a neighborhood member. This study shows that empathy, normative beliefs, and collective identity as a neighborhood member have significant impacts on participation in volunteer work. In addition, this study reveals that neighborhood member's network has an indirect impact on volunteering through identity as a neighborhood member. These results suggest that neighbor-hood community member's ties and collective identity are important sources for community welfare and collective volunteer work.

Employee participating corporate philanthropy, such as giving or volunteering, are especially increasing recently. This study analyzed the effects of giving and volunteering participation of the employees on job satisfaction and organizational citizenship behavior mediated by recognition and attitude about corporate philanthropy. Structural equation modeling was employed for statistical analyses. As a result of the study, it is clear that giving participation of the employees has a positive influence in job satisfaction and organizational citizenship behavior, mediated by the recognition and attitude about corporate philanthropy. However, the effects of volunteering participation of the employees on job satisfaction and organizational citizenship behavior mediated by recognition and attitude about corporate philanthropy was non-significant. The 163 subjects in this study were selected from male and female volunteer fire-fighters who resided in urban and rural regions in Gangwon Province. After a this survey was conducted, the collected data were analyzed by a statistical package SPSS WIN 20.0, and frequency analysis, correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were made. The findings of the study were as follows: First, as for the correlation of disaster perception, satisfaction and volunteering continuity, perception of disaster countermeasures, satisfaction and the level of participation were negatively correlated with one another, and there was a positive correlation among disaster training, disaster preparation, regional disaster, the period of volunteering, and will of persistent volunteering. Second, as for perception of disaster, the volunteer fire-fighters were asked a question about disaster countermeasures, and the largest group replied they were partially aware of the countermeasures. Concerning questions about disaster training/education experience and triage, the biggest group replied they underwent the training and knew about triage on the whole. Regarding questions on the emergency contact system and emergency work schedule, they knew about the two in general. As to a question on the occurrence of human disaster, the greatest group answered that they knew about it yet not well. Third, in regard to the impact of satisfaction level on volunteering continuity, the period of volunteering was affected by needs for experience, social contact and social recognition among the subfactors of satisfaction level, and will of persistent volunteering was under the influence of social contact and achievement needs. The level of persistent volunteering was affected only by needs for experience and achievement needs.
