Given a sequence of cross-sectional curves, the skinning method generates a freeform surface that interpolates the given curves in that sequence. This thesis presents a construction method of a B-spline skinning surface that is fair and satisfies volume constraints. The fairness metric is based on the parametric energy functional of a surface. The degrees of freedom in surface control are closely related lo control points in the skinning direction. The algorithm fur finding a skinning surface consists of two step. In the first step, an initial fair surface is generated without volume constraints and one coordinate of each control point is fixed. In the second step, a final surface that meets all constraints is constucted by rearranging the other coordinates of each control point that defines the initial surface A variational Lagrange optimization method produces a system of nonlinear equations, which can be solved numerically. Moreover, the reparametrization of given sectional curves is important for the construction of a reasonable skinning surface. This thesis also presents an intuitive metric for reparametrization and gives some examples that are optimized with respect to that metric.

This paper presents an Enhanced Particle Swarm Optimization (EPSO) to solve short-term hydrothermal scheduling (STHS) problem with non-convex fuel cost function and a variety of operational constraints related to hydro and thermal units. The operators of the conventional PSO are dynamically controlled using exponential functions for better exploration and exploitation of the search space. The overall methodology efficiently regulates the velocity of particles during their flight and results in substantial improvement in the conventional PSO. The effectiveness of the proposed method has been tested for STHS of two standard test generating systems while considering several operational constraints like system power balance constraints, power generation limit constraints, reservoir storage volume limit constraints, water discharge rate limit constraints, water dynamic balance constraints, initial and end reservoir storage volume limit constraints, valve-point loading effect, etc. The application results show that the proposed EPSO method is capable to solve the hard combinatorial constraint optimization problems very efficiently.

In this thesis, based on Genetic Algorithm, a new route search algorithm is presented to search an optimal route between the origin and the destination in intelligent route guidance systems in order to minimize the route traveling time. The proposed algorithm is effectively employed to complex road networks which have diverse turn constrains, time-delay constraints due to cross signals, and stochastic traffic volume. The algorithm is also shown to significantly promote search efficiency by changing the population size of path individuals that exist in each generation through the concept of age and lifetime to each path individual. A virtual road-traffic network with various turn constraints and traffic volume is simulated, where the suggested algorithm promptly produces not only an optimal route to minimize the route cost but also the estimated travel time for any pair of the origin and the destination, while effectively avoiding turn constraints and traffic jam.

This paper presents the shape optimization algorithm of magnetic systems with, state variable constraints using the Finite Element Method. In the design' of electromagnetic systems, sometimes we have to consider the state variables when they seriously affect the performance of electromagnetic systems. So we should define that some design problems have the constraints of the state variables. We use the gradient of constraints and sensitivity analysis in order to consider the state variable constraints and obtain an optimal shape. The optimal shape must be satisfied constraints, so we take the gradient projection method as a kind of optimization methods. In this paper a numerical example with state variable constraints uses the superconducting electromagnet that has another constraint which the volume of the superconductor should be constant.

This paper presents short-term hydro scheduling method for hydrothermal coordination by genetic algorithms. Hydro scheduling problem has many constraints with fixed final reservoir volume. In this paper, the difficult water balance constraints caused by hydraulic coupling satisfied throughout dynamic decoding method. Adaptive penalizing method was also proposed to handle the infeasible solutions that violate various constraints. In this paper, we proposed GA to solve hydrothermal scheduling with appropriate decoding method and dynamic penalty method. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated in the case study.

We had designed thermally controlled superconducting switches using a general nonlinear optimized algorithm with constraints and tested its performance. Objective function was to minimize the total volume of the superconducting switch. And constraints were to have designed resistance in normal status and temperature. In order to compare performance of the optimized superconducting switch, we made another one which had geometrically different parameters but had same structure and resistance value when the superconductor part is normal status by heater. Objective function converged very rapidly. As result, volume of the adiabatic part and total volume of the switch were reduced to more than 70% and 30% respectively. Also, even if same heater power was supplied with NiCr wire heater, the optimized superconducting switch had very fast On-OFF switching performance comparing with unoptimized switch.

This paper deals with free vibrations of the parabolic hollowed beam-columns with constant volume. The cross sections of beam-column taper are the hollowed regular polygons whose depths are varied with the parabolic functional fashion. Volumes of the objective beam-columns are always held constant regardless given geometrical conditions. Ordinary differential equation governing free vibrations of such beam-columns are derived and solved numerically for determining the natural frequencies. In the numerical examples, hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped and clamped-clamped end constraints are considered. As the numerical results, the relationships between non-dimensional frequency parameters and various beam-column parameters such as end constraints, side number, section ratio, thickness ratio and axial load are reported in tables and figures.

This study presents a structural design optimizing sizes of high-rise steel plane truss members by maximizing stiffness subjected to given volume constraints. The sizing optimum design is evaluated by using a well-known optimality criteria (OC) of gradient-based optimization methods. In typical size optimization methods, truss structures are optimized with respect to minimum weight with constraints on the value of some displacement and on the member stresses. The proposed method is an inversed size optimization process in comparisons with the typical size optimization methods since it maximizes stiffness associated with stresses or displacements subjected to volume constraints related to weight. The inversed approach is another alternative to classical size optimization methods in order to optimize members' sizes in truss structures. Numerical applications of a round shape steel pipe truss structure are studied to verify that the proposed maximum stiffness-based size optimization design is suitable for optimally developing truss members's sizes.

Since Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing(MEP) routing is a repetitive and experience-centered process that requires considerable time and human resources, if automated, design errors can be prevented and the previously required time and human resources can be reduced. Although research on automatic routing has been conducted in many industries, the MEP routing in AEC projects has yet to be identified due to the complexity of system configuration, distributed expertise, and various constraints. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify the target subjects for MEP routing automation and the constraints of each subject. The MEP design checklist provided by a CM company and existing literature review were conducted, and target subjects and constraints were identified through process observation and in-depth expert interviews for five days by visiting a MEP design company. The target subjects were largely divided into six categories: air conditioning plumbing, air conditioning duct, restroom sanitary plumbing, heating plumbing, and diagram. The findings from interviews show that work reduction and error reduction has the greatest effect on air conditioning plumbing while the level of difficulty is the highest in air conditioning duct and restroom sanitary plumbing. Major constraints for each subject include preventing cold drafts on air conditioning pipes, deviation in ventilation volume in air conditioning ducts, routing order on restroom sanitary plumbing, and separation distance from the wall on heating plumbing. In this way, subjects and constraints identified in this study can be used for MEP automatic routing.
We introduce a technique for designing homogeneous magnets using linear programming. The method has several advantages over existing techniques including: it allows complete flexibility in arbitrary geometric constraints on both the coil locations and the shape of the homogeneous volume; it guarantees a globally optimal solution, and it automatically choose the minimum number of coils necessary for the constraints.
