Optical characteristics of aerosols in Seoul are investigated from the measurements of sky radiance by Skyradiometer at Yonsei University from December 2005 to November 2006. Aerosol optical depth (AOD) shows a maximum in June due to weak ventilation and particle growth by aging process and hygroscopic effect. Single scattering albedo (SSA) and Angstrom Exponent (AE) show the lowest value in spring due to the Asian dust. It is clear that coarse mode is dominant in spring and fine mode is dominant in summer from the volume size distribution measured in this study. The explanations on the changes of aerosol loadings are provided through the correlation between AOD and AE, while the pattern of wavelength dependency related to particle size is shown through the correlation between SSA and AE. Backward trajectory analysis by HYSPLIT provides information about origin of aerosol, which allows us to classify the case according to the source region and the path distance. Although the direction of backward trajectory traces back mostly to west, coarse mode particle is dominant in the case of long pathway and fine mode particle is dominant in the case of short pathway. This discrepancy is caused by the regional difference of emitted particles.

DME(Di-Methyl Ehter, $CH_3OCH$) is currently attracting worldwide attention due to its environmentally friendly characteristics. Until now it was researched as a major alternative fuel of diesel automobile because it is a clean fuel producing low soot. Therefore, in this study, in order to investigate the effect of DME mixing on number density and size of soot particle, DME has been mixed in opposed-flow ethylene diffusion flame with the mixture ratios 5%, 14% and 30%. A laser extinction/scattering technique has been adopted to measure the volume fraction, number density, and size of soot particles. The experimental results showed that the soot concentration of mixture flames with the mixture ratios 5% and 14% produces soot more, even though that of 30% was decreased. This means that even though DME has been known to be a clean fuel for soot formation, the mixing of DME in diffusion flame of ethylene, where acetylene maintains high concentration in soot formation regions, could produce enhanced production of soot.

The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of mixed fuel composition and mass fraction on spray inner structure in evaporating transient spray under the variant ambient conditions. Spray structure and spatial distribution of liquid phase concentration were investigated using a thin laser sheet illumination technique on the three component mixed fuels. A pulsed Nd:YAG laser was used as a light source. The experiments were conducted in a constant volume vessel with optical access. Fuel was injected into the vessel with electronically controlled common rail injector. Used fuel contains i-octane($C_8H_{18}$), n-dodecane($C_{12}H_{26}$) and n-hexadecane($C_{16}H_{34}$) that were selected as low-, middle- and high-boiling point fuel, respectively. Experimental conditions are 42 MPa, 72 MPa and 112 MPa in injection pressure, $5\;kg/m^3$, $15kg/m^3$ and $30kg/m^3$ in ambient gas density, 300 K, 500 K, 600 K and 700 K in ambient gas temperature, 300 K and 368 K in fuel temperature and different fuel mass fraction. Experimental results indicated that the multi-component fuels made two phase region mixed vapor and liquid so that it would are helpful to improve combustion, for the fuels of high boiling point component could accelerate evaporation very much according as low boiling point fuel was added to high boiling point fuel.

Columnar aerosol properties retrieved from solar radiation were investigated at the Yongin (YGN) SKYNET site over seven years from October 2008 to October 2015. Hourly averages were calculated when the data were available, and back trajectories were calculated to examine the effects of regional transport. Data recovery rate was low at 6.6%, primarily because solar radiation was measured only under daytime clear-sky conditions. Mean values of the fine-mode volume fraction (FMVF) as well as its seasonal variation were similar to those of $PM_{2.5}/PM_{10}$ although the coarse-mode fraction of column aerosols tended to be slightly larger. The values of single scattering albedo (SSA) and FMVF were lower in spring due to the effects of mineral dust, and higher in summer due to secondarily-formed inorganic ions. Back trajectories were grouped into five clusters according to the directions of transport paths. Aerosol loading was highest for Cluster 2 from the northwest, but SSA and FMVF were not particularly high or low because aerosols were composed of various materials with different properties. Aerosol loading was lowest for Cluster 5 from the Pacific Ocean passing through the south end of Japan, whose SSA and FMVF were highest as secondarily-formed inorganic ions were mixed.
Microwave dielectric properties of the layered and functionally graded materials (FGMs) of $Mg_{0.93}Ca_{0.07}TiO_3$ (MCT) and $(Ca_{0.3}Li_{0.14}Sm_{0.42})TiO_3$(CLST) were investigated as a function of the volume ratio of two components. Dielectric constant was decreased with an increase of the volume ratio of MCT which had a lower dielectric constant thant CLST. For the layered FGMs specimens, the difference of thermal expansion coefficients between two components induced thermal strain to dielectric layers, which was confirmed by the plot of ${\Delta}$k (X-ray diffraction peak width0 versus k (scattering vector) using the double-peak Lorentzian function, f(x). Quality factor of the specimens was affected by the thermal strain of dielectric layer, especially MCT layer. For the specimen with the volume ratio of MCT/CLST = 2, the qulaity factor of the specimen showed a minimum value due to the maximum thermal strain fo MCT layer.

Forest stand height and volume are important indicators for management purpose as well as for the environmental analysis. Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) is backscattered over forest canopy and DSM can be acquired from such scattering characteristic, while National Elevation Dataset (NED) provides bare earth elevation data. The difference between SRTM and NED is estimated as tree height, and it is correlated with forest parameters, it is correlated with forest parameters, including average DBH, Trees per acre, net BF per acre, and total Net MBF. Especially, among them, net Board Foot(BF) per acre is the index that well represents forest volume. The Project site was Douglas-fir dominating plantation area in the western Washington an the northern Oregon in the U.S. This study shows a relationship of high correlation between the forest parameters and the product from SRTM, NED, and ETM+. This research performs multi regression analysis and regression tree algorithm, and can get more improved relationship between several parameters.
The spray and combustion characteristics of n-dodecane fuel were investigated in a CVCC (constant volume combustion chamber). The selection of ambient conditions for the spray followed ECN (engine combustion network) guidelines, which simulates the ambient condition of diesel engines at start of fuel injection. ECN is a collaboration network whose main objective is to establish an internet library of well-documented experiments that are appropriate for model validation and the advancement of scientific understanding of combustion at conditions specific to engines. Therefore repeatability of the experiments with high accuracy was important. The ambient temperature was varied from 750 to 930 K while the density was fixed at around $23kg/m^3$. The injection pressure of the fuel was varied from 500 to 1500 bar. The spray was injected in both non-reacting ($O_2$ concentration of 0%) and reacting conditions ($O_2$ concentration of 15%) to examine the spray and the combustion characteristics. Direct imaging with Mie Scattering was used to obtain the liquid penetration length. Shadowgraph was implemented to observe vapor length and lift-off length at non-reacting and reacting conditions, respectively. Pressure data was analyzed to determine the ignition delay with respect to the spray and ambient conditions.
Laboratory measurements were performed in a uni-algae medium Cochlodinium polykrikoides (Phytoplankton, dinoflagellates) using an Underwater Ultrasound $(5\~15\;MHz)$ to study Characteristics of Acoustic Backscattering of Harmful algae. In an effort to detect the harmful algal scatterers with population density of less than 300 cells/ml that corresponds to the precaution stage of red tide, backscattered signals from various scatterer-density samples were obtained and analyzed. Correlations between volume backscattering strength (Sv) and population density (cells/ml) of scatterers in the medium have been investigated. Comparison of Volume Backscattering Strengths calculated with the fluid-sphere model [1] and the measured values showed an agreement.

Novel microgels of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM)-co-methacrylic acid (MAA) (NIPAM-co-MAA) with different contents of N,N-methylene bis acrylamide (MBA) were prepared by emulsion polymerization technique and were studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and zeta potential measurement. Effect of pH, temperature and different salts concentration on the microgel particles was investigated. DLS results have shown that the hydrodynamic radius of the microgel increased upon increasing pH and decreased upon increasing temperature. The swelling/deswelling behaviors as determined by DLS showed the ionic repulsions of the carboxyl group of the methacrylic acid and hydrophobic interaction of NIPAM. The effect of various salts on volume phase transition temperature (VPTT) was also investigated. Upon increasing salt concentration, VPTT became broad and shifted to a lower temperature. Electrophoretic mobility measurements showed an increase with increasing pH and temperature at a constant ionic strength.
