A finite volume numerical approach is developed and used to simulate convection-dominated melting and solidification problems. The present approach is based on the enthalpy-porosity method that is traditionally used to track the motion of the liquid-solid front and to obtain the temperature and velocity profiles in the liquid-phase. The enthalpy-porosity model treats the solid-phase as the porosity in all computational cells that are located on the solid-liquid interfacial boundary. Concerning the computational cells that are fully located in the solid side of the interfacial boundary, the zero value of the porosity severely suppresses the velocity vector to practically a non-existent value that could be set equal to zero. A comparative analysis with the previous numerical approaches is performed to demonstrate the improved features of the presented model. Results of a melting and solidification experiments are also used to assess and evaluate the performance of the model.
In this paper, hyperbolic shear deformation plate theory is developed for thermal buckling of functionally graded plates with porosity by dividing transverse displacement into bending and shear parts. The present theory is variationally consistent, and accounts for a quadratic variation of the transverse shearstrains across the thickness and satisfies the zero traction boundary conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the plate without using shear correction factors. Three different patterns of porosity distributions (including even and uneven distribution patterns, and the logarithmic-uneven pattern) are considered. The logarithmic-uneven porosities for first time is mentioned. Equilibrium and stability equations are derived based on the present theory. The non-linear governing equations are solved for plates subjected to simply supported boundary conditions. The thermal loads are assumed to be uniform, linear and non-linear distribution through-the-thickness. A comprehensive parametric study is carried out to assess the effects of volume fraction index, porosity fraction index, aspect ratio and side-to-thickness ratio on the buckling temperature difference of imperfect FG plates.
This paper introduces an improved shear deformation theory for analyzing the buckling behavior of functionally graded plates subjected to varying temperatures. The transverse shear strain functions employed satisfy the stress-free condition on the plate surfaces without requiring shear correction factors. The material properties and thermal expansion coefficient of the porous functionally graded plate are assumed temperature-dependent and exhibit continuous variation throughout the thickness, following a modified power-law distribution based on the volume fractions of the constituents. Moreover, the study considers the influence of porosity distribution on the buckling of the functionally graded plates. Thermal loads are assumed to have uniform, linear, and nonlinear distributions through the thickness. The obtained results, considering the effect of porosity distribution, are compared with alternative solutions available in the existing literature. Additionally, this study provides comprehensive discussions on the influence of various parameters, emphasizing the importance of accounting for the porosity distribution in the buckling analysis of functionally graded plates.

Fabrication of porous silicon(PS) double layer by electrochemical etching is the first step in process of ultrathin solar cell using PS layer transfer process. The porosity of the porous silicon layer can be controlled by regulating the formation parameters such as current density and HF concentration. PS layer is fabricated by electrochemical etching in a chemical mixture of HF and ethanol. For electrochemical etching, highly boron doped (100) oriented monocrystalline Si substrates was used. Ths resistivity of silicon is $0.01-0.02\;{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$. The solution composition for electrochemical etching was HF (40%) : $C_2H_5OH$(99 %) : $H_2O$ = 1 : 1 : 2 (by volume). In order to fabricate porous silicon double layer, current density was switched. By switching current density from low to high level, a high-porosity layer was fabricated beneath a low-porosity layer. Etching time affects only the depth of porous silicon layer.
In the present study, buckling analysis of sandwich composite (carbon nanotube reinforced composite and fiber reinforced composite) Euler-Bernoulli beam in two configurations (core and layers material), three laminates (combination of different angles) and two models (relative thickness of core according to peripheral layers) using differential quadrature method (DQM) is studied. Also, the effects of porosity coefficient and different types of porosity distribution on critical buckling load are discussed. Using sandwich beam, it shows a considerable enhancement in the critical buckling load when compared to ordinary composite. Actually, resistance against buckling in sandwich beam is between two to four times more. It is also showed the critical buckling loads of laminate 1 and 3 are significantly larger than the results of laminate 2. When Configuration 2 is used, the critical buckling load rises about 3 percent in laminate 1 and 3 compared to the results of configuration 1. The amount of enhancement for laminate 3 is about 17 percent. It is also demonstrated that the influence of the core height (thickness) in the case of lower carbon volume fractions is ignorable. Even though, when volume fraction of fiber increases, differences grow smoothly. It should be noticed the amount of decline has inverse relationship with the beam aspect ratio. Among three porosity patterns investigated, beam with the distribution of porosity Type 2 (downward parabolic) has the maximum critical buckling load. At the end, the first three modes of buckling will be demonstrated to investigate the effect of spring constants.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of voxel size and different post-processing algorithms on the analysis of dental materials using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). Materials and Methods: Root-end cavities were prepared in extracted maxillary premolars, filled with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), Biodentine, and Intermediate Restorative Material (IRM), and scanned using micro-CT. The volume and porosity of materials were evaluated and compared using voxel sizes of 5, 10, and 20 ㎛, as well as different software tools(post-processing algorithms). The CTAn or MeVisLab/Materialise 3-matic software package was used to perform volume and morphological analyses, and the CTAn or MeVisLab/Amira software was used to evaluate porosity. Data were analyzed using 1-way ANOVA and the Tukey test(P<0.05). Results: Using MeVisLab/Materialise 3-matic, a consistent tendency was observed for volume to increase at larger voxel sizes. CTAn showed higher volumes for MTA and IRM at 20 ㎛. Using CTAn, porosity values decreased as voxel size increased, with statistically significant differences for all materials. MeVisLab/Amira showed a difference for MTA and IRM at 5 ㎛, and for Biodentine at 20 ㎛. Significant differences in volume and porosity were observed in all software packages for Biodentine across all voxel sizes. Conclusion: Some differences in volume and porosity were found according to voxel size, image-processing software, and the radiopacity of the material. Consistent protocols are needed for research evaluating dental materials.
In this study, porosity estimation was conducted by the physical properties of zeolite. Because of the difficulty of directly measuring the porosity of particulate matter, the porosity was calculated by applying the measured physical properties of zeolite to the calculation formula presented in various literature. For this purpose, the average particle size, particle size distribution, specific surface area, and pore characteristics of three types of zeolite - zeolite beta, zeolite Y, and ZSM-5 - were measured. In addition, the true density using gas and liquid phases, and two types apparent density (tap and untapped density) were measured. We calculated the porosity using these results, compare and analyzed the results, and evaluated main factors that determine the porosity.

The squeeze infiltration process is potentially of considerable industrial importance. The performance enhancements resulting from incorporation of short alumina fiber into aluminum are well documented. These are particularly significant for certain automobile components. But the solidification process gets complicated with manufacturing parameters and factors for porosity formation do not fully understand yet. In this study porosity defects were observed under several infiltrating conditions ; a kind of matrix, an initial temperature of melt, and a volume fraction of reinforcement. The desimetry and the microscopic image analysis were done to measure the amount of porosity. A correlation between manufacturing parameters and defects was investigated through these.
Even the finest cement as having a specific surface area of 6.000~8.500$\textrm{cm}^2$/g (Blaine) is to convert into low-porosity hardened cement paste by the use of appropriate plasticizer. In this study, tests were carried out on such a special cement mix(fineness of 6.000$\textrm{cm}^2$/g, Ca-lignosulfonate plus k2CO3 as plasticizer and W/C=0.25) in comparison with ordinary Portland cement. Owing mainly to the high fineness of the cement powder and the low water-to-cement ratio, the hardened low-porosity cement paste showed a very tight microstructure, the pore texture of which consisted of micropores and wide pores only of small radii. The consequence of such mix was hence that the low-porosity special cement had excellent properties of early-high and very high strengths as compared to ordinary Portland cement. Its volume change when dried in the air or re-wetted, exhibited superor behaviour as well.

In this study, the physical characteristics of steel-wire sound absorbing materials with different thickness and bulk density is experimentally obtained in terms of the porosity and specific flow resistivity. Based on the experimental results, the following conclusions can be made. The porosities of steel-wire sound absorbing materials are smaller than those of general absorbing materials, which are inversely proportional to the volume densities. For the porosity measurement with a good accuracy, the dynamic correction based on the system compliance should be involved in porosity measurement. In addition, the flow condition for the precise measurement of the specific flow resistivity of steel-wire sound absorbing materials should be limited in the laminar flow region.
