With the increasing demand for renewable energy, distributed power included in fuel cells have been studied and developed as a future energy source. For this system, a power conversion circuit is necessary to interface the generated power to the utility. In many cases, a high step-up dc/dc converter is needed to boost low input voltage to high voltage output. Conventional methods using cascade dc/dc converters cause extra complexity and higher cost. The conventional topologies to get high output voltage use flyback dc/dc converters. They have the leakage components that cause stress and loss of energy that results in low efficiency. This paper presents a high boost converter with a voltage multiplier and a coupled inductor. The secondary voltage of the coupled inductor is rectified using a voltage multiplier and series-connected with the boost voltage of primary voltage of the coupled inductor. Therefore, high boost voltage is obtained with low duty cycle. Theoretical analysis and experimental results verify the proposed solutions using a 300W prototype.
A new 3-phase line-interactive UPS(Uninterruptible Power Supply) system with parallel-series active power-line conditioning capability using AC line reactor and two four-leg PWM VSCs(Voltage Source Converters) was introduced recently, In this paper, the strategy of voltage control in suggested UPS system is explained. The objective of proposed voltage controllers in parallel(shunt) and series PWM VSC is to guarantee satisfactory characteristics in steady state and transient state.
Identification of fault current during the operation of a power semiconductor switch and activation of suitable remedial actions are important for reliable operation of power converters. A short circuit is a basic and severe fault situation in a circuit structure such as voltage source converters. This paper presents a new active protection circuit for fast and precise clamping and safe shutdown of fault currents of the IGBTs. This circuit allows operation of the IGBTs with a higher on-state gate voltage, which can thereby reduce the conduction loss in the device without compromising the short circuit protection characteristics. The operation of the circuit is studied under various conditions, considering variation of temperature, rising rate of fault current, gate voltage value, and protection circuit parameters. An evaluation of the operation of the circuit is made using IGBTs from different to confirm the effectiveness of the protection circuit.
An interleaved single-stage AC/DC converter with a boost converter and an asymmetrical half-bridge topology is presented to achieve power factor correction, zero voltage switching (ZVS) and load voltage regulation. Asymmetric pulse-width modulation (PWM) is adopted to achieve ZVS turn-on for all of the switches and to increase circuit efficiency. Two ZVS half-bridge converters with interleaved PWM are connected in parallel to reduce the ripple current at input and output sides, to control the output voltage at a desired value and to achieve load current sharing. A center-tapped rectifier is adopted at the secondary side of the transformers to achieve full-wave rectification. The boost converter is operated in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) to automatically draw a sinusoidal line current from an AC source with a high power factor and a low current distortion. Finally, a 240W converter with the proposed topology has been implemented to verify the performance and feasibility of the proposed converter.
In recent years, voltage source multilevel converters are very popular in medium/high-voltage industrial applications, among which the NPC/H-Bridge converter is a popular solution to the medium/high-voltage drive systems. The conventional finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) strategy is not practical for multilevel converters due to their substantial calculation requirements, especially under high number of voltage levels. To solve this problem, a hierarchical model predictive voltage control (HMPVC) strategy with referring to the implementation of g-h coordinate space vector modulation (SVM) is proposed. By the hierarchical structure of different cost functions, load currents can be controlled well and common mode voltage can be maintained at low values. The proposed strategy could be easily expanded to the systems with high number of voltage levels while the amount of required calculation is significantly reduced and the advantages of the conventional FCS-MPC strategy are reserved. In addition, a HMPVC-based field oriented control scheme is applied to a drive system with the NPC/H-Bridge converter. Both steady-state and transient performances are evaluated by simulations and experiments with a down-scaled NPC/H-Bridge converter prototype under various conditions, which validate the proposed HMPVC strategy.
Generation of electrical energy faces many problems today. Solar power converters were used to convert the electrical energy from the solar arrays to a stable and reliable power source. The object of this paper is to analyze and design DC-DC converters in a solar energy system to investigate the performance of the converters. A DC-DC converter can be commonly used to control the power flow from solar cell to load and to achieve maximum power point tracking(MPPT), DC-AC converter can also be used to modulate the DC power to AC power being applied on common utility load. A DC-DC converter is used to boost the solar cell voltage to constant 360(V) DC link and to ensure operation at the maximum power point tracking, If a wide input voltage range has to be covered a boost converter is required. In this paper, author described that simulation and experimental results of PV system contain solar modules, a DC-DC converter(boost type chopper), a DC-AC converter (3-phase inverter) and resistive loads.
Multi-pulse topology of converters using elementary six-pulse GTO - VSC (gate turn off based voltage source converter) operated under fundamental frequency switching (FFS) control is widely adopted in high power rating static synchronous compensators (STATCOM). Practically, a 48-pulse ($6{\times}8$ pulse) configuration is used with the phase angle control algorithm employing proportional and integral (PI) control methodology. These kinds of controllers, for example the ${\pm}80MVAR$ compensator at Inuyama switching station, KEPCO, Japan, employs two stages of magnetics viz. intermediate transformers (as many as VSCs) and a main coupling transformer to minimize harmonics distortion in the line and to achieve a desired operational efficiency. The magnetic circuit needs altogether nine transformers of which eight are phase shifting transformers (PST) used in the intermediate stage, each rating equal to or more than one eighth of the compensator rating, and the other one is the main coupling transformer having a power rating equal to that of the compensator. In this paper, a two-level 48-pulse ${\pm}100MVAR$ STATCOM is proposed where eight, six-pulse GTO-VSC are employed and magnetics is simplified to single-stage using four transformers of which three are PSTs and the other is a normal transformer. Thus, it reduces the magnetics to half of the value needed in the commercially available compensator. By adopting the simple PI-controllers, the model is simulated in a MATLAB environment by SimPowerSystems toolbox for voltage regulation in the transmission system. The simulation results show that the THD levels in line voltage and current are well below the limiting values specified in the IEEE Std 519-1992 for harmonic control in electrical power systems. The controller performance is observed reasonably well during capacitive and inductive modes of operation.
For high voltage DC-DC converters, the parallel operation of several high voltage source modules is necessary to reduce the material cost. In the conventional parallel operation with HDC module control unit, it is difficult to repair the HDC system for the failure of control unit. To overcome these problems, new parallel operating algorithm for high voltage DC-DC converter is presented. The proposed algorithm has no main control unit and each module can be selected as the master according to the operating conditions. Therefore, one of modules can be replaced as the master immediately when the previous master module is failed. In addition, the extension of extra modules can be simple.
This paper presents a new control scheme for a DVR(Dynamic Voltage Restorer) system consisting of series voltage source PWM converters. To control negative sequence component of source voltage the detection of negative sequence is necessary. Generally, filtering process is used tn do that. Through this filtering process has some problems. This paper suggests a new method of separating positive and negative sequences. This control system is designed using differential controllers and digital filters, and positive sequence and negative sequences are controlled respectively. The performance of the presented controller and scheme are confirmed through simulation and actual experiment by 2.5kVA prototype DVR.
This paper deals with a novel solid state controller (NSSC) for an isolated asynchronous generator (IAG) feeding 3-phase 4-wire loads driven by constant power prime movers, such as uncontrolled pico hydro turbines. AC capacitor banks are used to meet the reactive power requirement of the asynchronous generator. The proposed NSSC is realized using a set of IGBTs (Insulated gate bipolar junction transistors) based current controlled 2-leg voltage source converters (CC- VSC) and a DC chopper at its DC bus, which keeps the generated voltage and frequency constant in spite of changes in consumer loads. The neutral point of the load is created using aT-configuration of the transformers. The IAG system is modeled in MATLAB along with Simulink and PSB (power system block set) toolboxes. The simulated results are presented to demonstrate the capability of the isolated generating system consisting of NSSC and IAG driven by uncontrolled pico hydro turbine and feeding 3-phase 4-wire loads.
