The increasing demand for high voltage DC grids resulting from the continuous installation of offshore wind farms in the North Sea has led to the concept of multi-terminal direct current (MTDC) grids, which face some challenges. Power (current) flow control is a challenge that must be addressed to realize a reliable operation of MTDC grids. This paper presents a reduced switch count topology of a current flow controller (CFC) for power flow and current limiting applications in MTDC grids. A simple control system based on hysteresis band current control is proposed for the CFC. The theory of operation and control of the CFC are demonstrated. The key features of the proposed controller, including cable current balancing, cable current limiting, and current nulling, are illustrated. An MTDC grid is simulated using MATLAB/SIMULINK software to evaluate the steady state and dynamic performance of the proposed CFC topology. Furthermore, a low power prototype is built for a CFC to experimentally validate its performance using rapid control prototyping. Simulation and experimental studies indicate the fast dynamic response and precise results of the proposed topology. Furthermore, the proposed controller offers a real solution for power flow challenges in MTDC grids.
To reduce system complexity and implementation costs, fully-controlled H-bridge (FHB) modules and diode H-bridge PFC (DHB) modules are cascaded to form a hybrid cascaded H-bridge rectifier (HCHR). In this paper, the advantages of such a HCHR over other cascaded rectifiers are analyzed depending on the numbers of FHB modules and DHB modules. Therefore, to assign proper numbers to these two kinds of modules for the HCHR, a configuration determination method is investigated under balanced and imbalanced loads. Three principles are also presented to guide the configuration determination for the HCHR. In addition, the constraints for selecting the step-up ratio and filter inductance are derived based on a phasor diagram analysis. The proposed configuration determination method is validated by simulations under three different conditions in the PSIM environment. Finally, experiments are carried out on a scaled-down prototype where the configuration can be easily adjusted. The feasibility of the proposed theory is then verified by experimental results.

This paper presents a 20-Gb/s optical receiver circuit fabricated with standard 65-nm CMOS technology. Our receiver circuits are designed with consideration for parasitic inductance and capacitance due to bonding wires connecting the photodetector and the circuit realized separately. Such parasitic inductance and capacitance usually disturb the high-speed performance but, with careful circuit design, we achieve optimized wide and flat response. The receiver circuit is composed of a transimpedance amplifier (TIA) with a DC-balancing buffer, a post amplifier (PA), and an output buffer. The TIA is designed in the shunt-feedback configuration with inductive peaking. The PA is composed of a 6-stage differential amplifier having interleaved active feedback. The receiver circuit is mounted on a FR4 PCB and wire-bonded to an equivalent circuit that emulates a photodetector. The measured transimpedance gain and 3-dB bandwidth of our optical receiver circuit is 84 $dB{\Omega}$ and 12 GHz, respectively. 20-Gb/s $2^{31}-1$ electrical pseudo-random bit sequence data are successfully received with the bit-error rate less than $10^{-12}$. The receiver circuit has chip area of $0.5mm{\times}0.44mm$ and it consumes excluding the output buffer 84 mW with 1.2-V supply voltage.

A large number of lithium-ion batteries are arranged in series and parallel in battery packs, such as those in electric vehicles or energy storage systems. As battery packs age, their output power and energy density drop because of voltage deviation, constant and non-uniform exposure to abnormal environments, and increased contact resistance between batteries; this reduces application system efficiency. Despite the balancing circuit and logic of the battery management system, the output of the battery pack is concentrated in the most severely aged unit cell and the output is frequently limited by power derating. In this study, we implemented a cell imbalance detection algorithm and selected parameters to detect a sudden decrease in battery pack output. In addition, we propose a method to increase efficiency by applying the measured testing values considering the operating conditions and abnormal conditions of the battery pack.
The applications of Distributed Generation (DG) in a smart distribution grid environment are widely employed especially for power balancing and supporting demand responses. Using these applications can have both positive and negative impacts on the distribution system. The sizing and location of their installations are the issues that should be taken into consideration to gain the maximum benefit from them when considering the economic aspects. This paper presents an application of the Bat Algorithm (BA) for the optimal sizing and siting of DG in a smart distribution power system in order to maximize the Benefit to Cost Ratio (BCR), subjected to system constraints including real and reactive power generation, line and transformer loading, voltage profile, energy losses, fault level as well as DG operating limits. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology and the impact of considering economic issues on DG placement, a simplify 9-bus radial distribution system of the Provincial Electricity Authority of Thailand (PEA) is selected for the computer simulation to explore the benefit of the optimal DG placement and the performance of the proposed approach.

This paper describes the preparation and characteristics of a battery capacitor and module for solar power system. A cylindrical 30,000F battery capacitor ($60{\times}138mm$) was assembled by using the $LTO(Li_4Ti_5O_{12})$ electrode as an anode and $NMC(LiNiMnCoO_2)-LCO(LiCoO_2)$ as a cathode. The battery capacitor has reduced energy density and power density under high CC(constant current) and CP(constant power) conditions. Battery capacitor module (16V, 11Ah) was fabricated using an asymmetric hybrid capacitor with a capacitance of 30,000F. In order to determine the characteristics of the battery capacitor Module for solar power system, battery capacitor cells were connected in series with active balancing circuit. As a result of measuring the 100w LED lamp, it was discharged at the voltage of 15V~10V, and the compensation time at discharge was measured to be about 4979s. Experimental results show that it can be applied to applications related to solar power system by applying battery capacitor module.

With the development of drone and ICT convergence technology, the use of underwater drones such as leisure underwater drones such as underwater exploration for fishing and industrial drones such as bridge piers is increasing. Existing motor controllers are suitable for aerial drones and these can increase the completeness of underwater drones and their reliability in motor control by developing BLDC motor controllers dedicated to underwater drones. By developing a battery management system (BMS) exclusively for underwater drones, battery stability was ensured by checking the state of charge, checking the state of discharge, adjusting cell balancing, and implementing high/voltage protection functions.

This paper proposes a battery model coefficient correction method for improving the accuracy of existing lithium battery equivalent models. BMS(battery management system) has been researched and developed to minimize shortening of battery life by keeping SOC(state of charge) and state of charge of lithium battery used in various industrial fields such as EV. However, the cell balancing operation based on the battery cell voltage can not follow the SOC change due to the internal resistance and the capacitor. Various battery equivalent models have been studied for estimation of battery SOC according to the internal resistance of the battery and capacitors. However, it is difficult to apply the same to all the batteries, and it tis difficult to estimate the battery state in the transient state. The existing battery electrical equivalent model study simulates charging and discharging dynamic characteristics of one kind of battery with error rate of 5~10% and it is not suitable to apply to actual battery having different electric characteristics. Therefore, this paper proposes a battery model coefficient correction algorithm that is suitable for real battery operating environments with different models and capacities, and can simulate dynamic characteristics with an error rate of less than 5%. To verify proposed battery model coefficient calibration method, a lithium battery of 3.7V rated voltage, 280 mAh, 1600 mAh capacity used, and a two stage RC tank model was used as an electrical equivalent model of a lithium battery. The battery charge/discharge test and model verification were performed using four C-rate of 0.25C, 0.5C, 0.75C, and 1C. The proposed battery model coefficient correction algorithm was applied to two battery models, The error rate of the discharge characteristics and the transient state characteristics is 2.13% at the maximum.
A PEMFC system model for FCEV was constructed and simulated numerically to examine the heat/water flow of the system and air/fuel humidification process for various operation conditions (ambient pressure /temperature/humidity, operating temperature, power load). We modeled PEMFC stack which can generate maximum electricity of about 80 kW. This stack consists of 400 unit cells and each unit cell has $250cm^2$ reacting area. Uniform current density and uniform operating voltage per each cell was assumed. The results show the flow characteristics of heat and water at each component of PEMFC system in macro-scale. The capacity shortage of the radiator occurred when the ambient was hot $(over\;40^{\circ}C)$ and power level was high (over 50 kW). In spite of some heat release by evaporation of water in stack, heat unbalance reached to 20kW approximately in such a severe operating condition. This heat unbalance could be recovered by auxiliary radiators or high speed cooling fan with additional cost. In cold environment, the capacity of radiator exceeded the net heat generation to be released, which may cause a problem to drop the operating temperature of stack. We dealt with this problem by regulating mass flow rate of coolant and radiator fan speed. Finally, water balance was not easily broken when we retrieved condensed and/or unused water.
