  • The effect of microstructure on the permeability of two saturated marine clays was studied through a series of falling head permeability tests and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) tests. The key findings from this experimental study include the following results: (1) The permeability of undisturbed specimens is larger than that of reconstituted specimens at the same void ratio due to different soil fabrics, i.e., the pore size distributions (PSDs), even though they have the similar variation law in the permeability versus void ratio. (2) Different permeabilities of undisturbed and reconstituted specimens at the same void ratio are mainly caused by the difference in void ratio of macro-pores based on the MIP test results. (3) A high relevant relation between $C_k$ ($C_k$ is the permeability change index) and $e*_{10}$, can be found by normalizing the measured data both on undisturbed or reconstituted specimens. Hence, the reference void ratio $e*_{10}$, can be used as a reasonable parameter to identify the effect of soil fabric on the permeability of saturated soft clays.

  • The ball grid array is one of the packaging methods that used in high density printed circuit board. Solder void defects caused by voids in the solder ball during the BGA process do not directly affect the reliability of the product, but it may accelerate the aging of the device on the PCB layer or interface surface depending on its size or location. Void inspection is important because it is related in yields with products. The most important process in the optical inspection of solder void is the segmentation process of solder and void. However, there are several segmentation algorithms for the vision inspection, it is impossible to inspect all of images ideally. When X-Ray images with poor contrast and high level of noise become difficult to perform image processing for vision inspection in terms of software programming. This paper suggests the solution to deal with the suggested problem by means of using Mask R-CNN instead of digital image processing algorithm. Mask R-CNN model can be trained with images pre-processed to increase contrast or alleviate noises. With this process, it provides more efficient system about complex object segmentation than conventional system.

  • Upsetting is performed in open-die press forging to deform metal in all directions in order to enhance soundness of a product and reduce directionality of properties caused by casting. It is necessary to ensure sufficient forging ratio for subsequent cogging operations and consolidate the void along the centerline. To obtain these benefits, the upper die shape (dome and dished shape) is considered as an upsetting parameter. Thermo-viscoplastic finite element analysis has been carried out so as to understand the influence of upper die shape on the effective strain, hydrostatic stress and temperature in the upset-forged ingots without internal defects. The analysis is focused on the investigation into internal void closure in ingots with pipe holes and circular voids. The computational results have shown that the volume fraction of the void is independent of the circular void size and the closure of internal voids is much more influenced by the effective strain than the hydrostatic stress around the void. It is finally suggested that the height reduction must be over 35% for consolidation of internal voids.

  • Linear traverse method and point count method described at ASTM have been widely used to estimate the air void system in hardened concrete. These methods, however, are rarely used at present, because they require many efforts and time consuming works. Also these results depend on each person's decision, and are not repeatable. Thus, new image analysis method using microscope and computer processes has been approached for analyzing air void system in hardened concrete. The purpose of this study was to analysis the air void systems in latex-modified concretes using a reasonable and objective image analysis method with main experimental variables such as cement types(ordinary portland cement, rapid setting cement) and latex contents(0%,15%). In the results of this study, the use of polymer latex showed that it could be attributed to its air void systems, due to the fact that the latex emulsion acts as an air-entraining agent, which thus generally guarantees an adequate air-void system.

  • Real slug and bubbly flows were measured using a three-ring impedance meter that can efficiently measure the void fraction of two-phase flows in a tube. First, the fitting curves between the signal from the impedance meters and the void fraction were found. The impedance meter had different fitting curves for slug and bubbly flows that had the same void fraction. An impedance meter should choose one of the two fitting curves according to the flow pattern, and the flow patterns can be recognized using the measured void fraction. The velocities and sizes of the bubbles were calculated using the void fraction curves measured by two impedance meters.

  • This paper presents the identification of void diameters for a cast-resin transformer using an artificial neural network (ANN) model. A PD signal was measured by the Rogowski coil sensor which has the planar and thin structures fabricated on a printed circuit board (PCB), and the PD electrode system was fabricated to simulate a PD defect by a void. In addition, void samples with different diameters were fabricated by injecting air in a cylindrical aluminum frame using a syringe during the epoxy curing process. To identify the diameter of void defects, PD characteristics such as the discharge magnitude, pulse count, and phase angle were extracted and back propagation algorithm (BPA) was designed using virtual instrument (VI) based on the Labview program. From the experimental results, the BPA algorithm proposed in this paper has over 90% accurate rate to identify the diameter of void defects and is expected to use reference data of maintenance and replacement of insulation for cast-resin transformers in the on-site PD measurement.

  • The aeration of an overtopping wave on a vertical structure generated by a plunging wave was investigated through laboratory measurements of void fraction. The overtopping wave occurring after wave breaking becomes multi-phased and turbulent with significant aeration, so that the void fraction of the flow is of importance. In this study, fiber optic reflectometer and bubble image velocimetry were employed to measure the void fraction, velocity, and layer thickness of the overtopping flow. Mean properties were obtained by ensembleand time-averaging the repeated instantaneous void fractions and velocities. The mean void fractions show that the overtopping wave is very high-aerated near the overtopping wave front and relatively low-aerated near the deck surface and rear free surface of the wave. The flow rate and momentum of the overtopping flow estimated using the measured data show that the void ratio is an important parameter to consider in the multiphase flow. From the similarity profiles of the depth-averaged void fraction, velocity, and layer thickness, one-dimensional empirical equations were obtained and used to estimate the flow rate and momentum of the overtopping flow.

  • The RFI process is an OoA process that fiber mats and resin films are laminated and cured in a vacuum bag. In case that resin film is insufficient to fill empty space in fibers, it makes void defect in composites and this void decrease mechanical properties of the composites. For this reason, non-destructive testing is usually used to evaluate void of manufactured composites. So, in this study, a manufacturing method of standard void specimens, which are able to be used as references in non-destructive testing, was proposed by controlling resin film thickness in the RFI process. Also, a fiber compaction test was proposed as a method to set the resin film thicknesses depending on target voids of manufacturing panels. The target void panels of 0%, 2%, and 4% were made by the proposed methods, and signal attenuation depending on void was measured by non-destructive testing and image analysis. In addition, voids of specimens for tensile, in-plane, short beam and compressive tests were estimated by signal attenuation, and mechanical properties were evaluated depending on the voids.

  • This paper proposes an approach to predict the reliability of high temperature heaters by identifying their primary failure modes and mechanisms in the field. Test specimens were designed to have the equivalent stress conditions with the high temperature heaters in the field in order to examine the effect of stress conditions on the solder joint failures. There failures often result from cracking due to intermetallic compound (IMC) or void formation within a solder joint. Aging tests have been performed by exposing the test specimens to a temperature of $170^{\circ}C$ in order to reproduce solder joint failures in the field. During the test, changes in IMC formation were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) on the cross-sections of the test specimens, while changes in void formation were monitored both by resistance spectroscopy and by micro-computed tomography (microCT), alternately. The test results demonstrated the void volume within the solder increased as the time at the high temperature increased. Also, the phase shift of high frequency resistance was found to have high correlation with the void volume. These results implied the failure of high temperature heaters can be non-destructively predicted based on the correlation.
