Basic components for multimodal interface, such as speech recognition, speech synthesis, gesture recognition, and multimodal fusion, have their own technological limitations. For example, the accuracy of speech recognition decreases for large vocabulary and in noisy environments. In spite of those technological limitations, there are lots of applications in which speech-oriented multimodal user interfaces are very helpful to users. However, in order to expand application areas for speech-oriented multimodal interfaces, we have to develop the interfaces focused on usability. In this paper, we introduce usability and user-centered design methodology in general. There has been much work for evaluating spoken dialogue systems. We give a summary for PARADISE (PARAdigm for Dialogue System Evaluation) and PROMISE (PROcedure for Multimodal Interactive System Evaluation) that are the generalized evaluation frameworks for voice and multimodal user interfaces. Then, we present usability components for speech-oriented multimodal user interfaces and usability testing guidelines that can be used in a user-centered multimodal interface design process.
In the acoustic modeling for large vocabulary speech recognition, a sparse data problem caused by a huge number of context-dependent (CD) models usually leads the estimated models to being unreliable. In this paper, we develop a new clustering method based on the C45 decision-tree learning algorithm that effectively encapsulates the CD modeling. The proposed scheme essentially constructs a supervised decision rule and applies over the pre-clustered triphones using the C45 algorithm, which is known to effectively search through the attributes of the training instances and extract the attribute that best separates the given examples. In particular, the data driven method is used as a clustering algorithm while its result is used as the learning target of the C45 algorithm. This scheme has been shown to be effective particularly over the database of low unknown-context ratio in terms of recognition performance. For speaker-independent, task-independent continuous speech recognition task, the proposed method reduced the percent accuracy WER by 3.93% compared to the existing rule-based methods.
A modified speech recogniser have been proposed for automatic capitalisation generation to improve the readability of English speech recognition output. In this modified speech recogniser, every word in its vocabulary is duplicated: once in a de-caplitalised form and again in the capitalised forms. In addition its language model is re-trained on mixed case texts. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed system, experiments of automatic capitalisation generation were performed for 3 hours of Broadcast News(BN) test data using the modified HTK BN transcription system. The proposed system produced an F-measure of 0.7317 for automatic capitalisation generation with an SER of 48.55, a precision of 0.7736 and a recall of 0.6942.
This paper explores new techniques that are based on a hidden-layer linear transformation for fast speaker adaptation used in deep neural networks (DNNs). Conventional methods using affine transformations are ineffective because they require a relatively large number of parameters to perform. Meanwhile, methods that employ singular-value decomposition (SVD) are utilized because they are effective at reducing adaptive parameters. However, a matrix decomposition is computationally expensive when using online services. We propose the use of an extended diagonal linear transformation method to minimize adaptation parameters without SVD to increase the performance level for tasks that require smaller degrees of adaptation. In Korean large vocabulary continuous speech recognition (LVCSR) tasks, the proposed method shows significant improvements with error-reduction rates of 8.4% and 17.1% in five and 50 conversational sentence adaptations, respectively. Compared with the adaptation methods using SVD, there is an increased recognition performance with fewer parameters.
In speech recognition, confidence measuring is to decide whether it can be accepted as the recognized results or not. The confidence is measured by integrating frames into phone and word level. In case of word recognition, the confidence measuring verifies the results of recognition and Out-Of-Vocabulary (OOV). Therefore, the post-processing could improve the performance of recognizer without accepting it as a recognition error. In this paper, we measure the confidence modifying log likelihood ratio (LLR) which was the previous confidence measuring. It accumulates only those which the log likelihood ratio is negative when integrating the confidence to phone level from frame level. When comparing the verification performance for the results of word recognizer with the previous method, the FAR (False Acceptance Ratio) is decreased about 3.49% for the OOV and 15.25% for the recognition error when CAR (Correct Acceptance Ratio) is about 90%.

This paper proposes an algorithm and a model topology for the connected speech recognition using Discrete Hidden Markov Models. A proposed model uses diphone and triphone model which consider the recognition rate and recognisable vocabulary. Considering more exact inter- phoneme segmentation and execution speed of algorithm, 4 states have to exist in diphone model where the first state and the last state are keeping a steady state, the other states hold a transient state. 7 states have to exist in triphone model where 7 states are specified and improved to 3 steady states and 4 transition states. Also, the proposed speech recognition algorithm is designed to detect the inter-phoneme segmentation during the recognition processing.
In this paper, we propose to use a parallel-branch subunit model for improved word recognition. The model is obtained by splitting off each subunit branch based on mixture component in continuous hidden Markov model(continuous HMM). According to simulation results, the proposed model yields higher recognition rate than the single-branch subunit model or the parallel-branch subunit model proposed by Rabiner et al[1]. We show that a proper combination of the number of mixture components and the number of branches for each subunit results in increased recognition rate. To study the recognition performance of the proposed algorithms, the speech material used in this work was a vocabulary with 1036 Korean words.
Recognition model is not defined when you configure a model, Been added to the model after model building awareness, Model a model of the clustering due to lack of recognition models are generated by modeling is causes the degradation of the recognition rate. In order to improve decision tree state tying modeling using parameter estimation of Bayesian method. The parameter estimation method is proposed Bayesian method to navigate through the model from the results of the decision tree based on the tying state according to the maximum probability method to determine the recognition model. According to our experiments on the simulation data generated by adding noise to clean speech, the proposed clustering method error rate reduction of 1.29% compared with baseline model, which is slightly better performance than the existing approach.

In this paper, we propose the pseudo n-gram language models for speech recognition with middle size vocabulary compared to large vocabulary speech recognition using the statistical n-gram language models. The proposed method is that it is very simple method, which has the standard structure of ARPA and set the word probability arbitrary. The first, the 1-gram sets the word occurrence probability 1 (log likelihood is 0.0). The second, the 2-gram also sets the word occurrence probability 1, which can only connect the word start symbol and WORD, WORD and the word end symbol . Finally, the 3-gram also sets the ward occurrence probability 1, which can only connect the word start symbol , WORD and the word end symbol . To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, the word recognition experiments are carried out. The preliminary experimental results (off-line) show that the word accuracy has average 97.7% for 452 words uttered by 3 male speakers. The on-line word recognition results show that the word accuracy has average 92.5% for 20 words uttered by 20 male speakers about stock name of 1,500 words. Through experiments, we have verified the effectiveness of the pseudo n-gram language modes for speech recognition.

This is the study on recognition units and segmentation of phonemes. In the case of making large vocabulary speech recognition system, it is better to use the segment than the syllable or the word as the recognition unit. In this paper, we study on the proper recognition units and segmentation of phonemes for Korean speech recognition. For experiments, we use the speech toolkit of OGI in U.S.A. The result shows that the recognition rate of the case in which the diphthong is established as a single unit is superior to that of the case in which the diphthong is established as two units, i.e. a glide plus a vowel. And recognizer using manually-aligned training data is a little superior to that using automatically-aligned training data. Also, the recognition rate of the case in which the bipbone is used as the recognition unit is better than that of the case in which the mono-Phoneme is used.
