Vocabulary learning plays an important role in language learning. This study explored a new paradigm based on social networking site (SNS) supported collaborative learning for vocabulary learning. SNS supported collaborative learning (SSCL) can effectively promote learners' engagement, interest and motivation by providing a more communicative and interactive environment. However, vocabulary learning studies on SSCL mainly focused on the effectiveness and influencing factors, lacking specific instructional strategies. Therefore, this study aims to develop instructional strategies that guide instructors to create an SSCL environment for facilitating vocabulary learning. The final instructional strategies are composed of three stages according to the course process, consisting of 8 general strategies and 21 specific guidelines. The content validity was ensured by four experts in the field of educational technology. The instructional strategies were then applied in an actual classroom with 16 students. The positive responses from the instructor and learners indicated that SSCL can be reasonably incorporated into the current curriculum to provide effective learning opportunities and to promote learners' vocabulary learning.
This paper aims to explore the vocabulary difference between South and North Korean English textbooks as a first step toward a unified vocabulary list. To this end, both South and North Korean English textbooks in 2000s and 2010s are digitized into a corpus of text files, and a vocabulary list is constructed based on the corpus with reference to its concordances for the vocabulary use and contexts using AntConc 3.5.7. The vocabulary list of North Korean English textbooks are compared and found in their differences of quantity and quality of the English vocabulary in English education. Both quantitative and qualitative differences are found in between South and North Korean English textbook corpus. Both South and North aim that students learn about 3,000 words throughout the English education. North Korean English textbook contains more special academic vocabulary while South Korean English textbook is constrained by a strict vocabulary control which does not allow such a flexibility. Differences of vocabulary and their use are caused by the capitalistic market economy of South and the socialists' planned economy of North. Differences are also attributed to the religious words and grammatical vocabulary appearance.
The purpose of this study was to research the effects of Korean beginner learners' perception of vocabulary learning and comparison of vocabulary learning methods between the use of vocabulary application Classcard and rote learning with writing. This experiment was conducted by 24 beginner Korean learners who were at the 1st and 2nd level in Institute of Korean Language of D University. These students were dividing into 2 groups for the test - 12 in the control group and 12 in the experimental group. They took the vocabulary tests which were designed for examining the differences between before and after learning. Study results showed that vocabulary learning using the application Classcard significantly improved learners' vocabulary scores which were statistically significant. These results demonstrated that the method using Classcard has a greater learning effect than the method of rote learning with writing. Furthermore, the survey showed that learners did not feel uncomfortable in learning vocabulary using the application Classcard, and they thought it was one of the ways to learn vocabulary easily, which means that vocabulary learning using this application has a positive effect on learners' learning achievement. This study is significant in that it suggested a vocabulary learning method that can increase learners' interest and vocabulary by proving the effect of vocabulary learning using applications.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of toddlers' vocabulary ability with reading activities and teachers' verbal and nonverbal behaviors during book reading. The subjects were 52 teachers and 104 toddlers at age 2. Lee and Kim (2004)'s categories of the Teachers' Verbal Behaviors, the categories of the Nonverbal Behavioral Analysis(Kim. 2005), and the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-Revised (Kim, et al.1995) were used. The data was analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, and Correlations. The results indicated that there were significant correlations in the subcategories of reading activities in classrooms, teachers' picture book reading behaviors, and toddler's vocabulary ability. The toddler's vocabulary ability increased as the 'interacting time both before and after book reading' became longer. The toddler's vocabulary ability increased as 'connecting with previous experience', 'asking questions for confirmation', 'acknowledging,' and 'expanding' of verbal behavior, as well as the nonverbal behavior, such as 'requesting behavior', 'emotional contact,' and 'empathetic behavior.' In conclusion, teachers' reading behaviors and activities were related to toddlers' vocabulary ability.
Objective: The goal of this study is to research how mother's literacy interaction influences children's interest in vocabulary and reading. Methods: The research subjects selected were 120 children who were three to four-year-old and their mothers. This study conducted questionnaires about the literacy interaction of the mothers. This study also surveyed vocabulary and interest in reading of the children by directly visiting the institutes and by researching the subjects individually. This study used technical statistics, Person's product-moment correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis in order to analyze the collected data. Results: The results of this study are summarized and concluded as follows. First, open interaction among the sub-areas of a mother's literacy interaction significantly affected children's vocabulary. Second, a mother's literacy interaction with children had no direct impact on the child's interest in reading. Conclusion/Implications: The mother's literacy interaction could have a correlation with the vocabulary development of three to four-year-old children, and a mother's application of open interaction could significantly influence the receptive vocabulary and expressive vocabulary of children.
This study evaluated the content of Korean vocabulary learning applications with a focus on tablet PC applications. We analyzed 51 Korean vocabulary learning applications. The instruments in this study were developed based on Yoo et al. (2012)' Vocabulary Learning Game Application Evaluation Criteria and Hyun et al. (2013)' Educational Application Evaluation Criteria. Data were analyzed using a t-test and one-way analysis of variance. The main results are as follows. First, each criteria's score was fairly good; the ease of use had the highest scores and the amusement had the lowest scores. Second, there was a significant difference in the interaction by vocabulary teaching approach. Applications based on a whole language-teaching method had higher scores than applications based on a phonics instructional teaching method inducing more operation and with immediate feedback. Third, there was significant difference in the sum of score and each criteria of developmental appropriateness, educational values, amusement, function and interaction by type of learning. Applications of combining type had higher scores in every criteria except for ease of use than applications of description type. These findings provide a preliminary evidence that the systematic Korean vocabulary learning application facilitates preschoolers' vocabulary learning.
This study lists the vocabulary of the inscriptions on SeoGwol-YeongGeon-DoGam-UiGwe(西闕營建都監儀軌 1831). This study also deciphers and explains the meanings of them. In advance, this study compares them with the vocabulary of the national language in the middle ages and in modem times. There are two important missions in deciphering a transcription marking of the architectural vocabulary of UiGwe(儀軌). One is to gain an understanding of the reading method of transcription marking and the other is an explanation of what that means. As a result, we can correctly understand the UiGwe(儀軌) written in transcription marks. If we could decipher the transcription markings of the documents as it is, we cannot only recover plenty of vocabulary related with characteristic architecture in the age of the later Joseon Dynasty, but also correct wrongly used vocabulary in the present. As a result, we can standardize and adjust the vocabulary use of Korean traditional architecture. In advance, we can correct errors of spelling and mistaken explanations in the Korean Encyclopedia.
The present study examined vocabulary usage in elementary English classrooms in Japan using elementary school corpus. The authors used three wordlists to benchmark the lexical items for four classes in the corpus: the CEFR-J, the General Service List (GSL), and Academic Word List (AWL). The percentage of vocabulary usage belonging to the Level A1 in the CEFR-J was below 15% (Class A: 12.1%, Class B: 12.6%, Class C: 8.9%, and Class D: 13.6%) with no statistical difference between levels. The mean ratio of Level A2 vocabulary items was below 10%, and all classes showed less than 1% of vocabulary usage for the Levels B1 and B2. Over 70% of all vocabulary items in the corpus belonged to the most frequent 1,000-word band (level 1) of the GSL, while the next most frequent word band (level 2 of the GSL and AWL) accounted for less than 10%. The results suggest that elementary school English teachers should use more vocabulary items in the CEFR-J Level A1. The findings demonstrate that elementary school teachers are less likely to expose their pupils to grammatically well-structured sentences with an abundance of lexical items since the teachers repeatedly use the same lexemes in each class.
Objectives: This study was aimed to identify the expressions used by consumers to talk and by mediator to provide information about hypertension in the internet and suggest more understandable vocabulary for consumers. Methods: A researcher collected archival postings associated 78 hypertension-related vocabularies from internet websites for extracting consumer and mediator vocabulary respectively. Then, the consumer and mediator vocabularies with the same meaning as 78 vocabularies were extracted from postings collected by two non-professional extractors and a researcher, respectively. Both consumer and mediator vocabularies manually mapped to the 78 hypertension-related representing vocabularies. Finally, the survey was conducted from 110 inpatients and 115 nurses from December 27 to 31, 2013 for the selection of recommended vocabulary related to hypertension. Data were analyzed using the SPSS program and included descriptive statistics. Based on the survey results, the recommended vocabularies were selected for laypersons. Results: 67 consumer and 73 mediator vocabularies were linked with the 78 vocabularies. Two vocabularies unmapped to both consumer and mediator vocabularies were 'wheeze' and 'angioplasty'. 49 recommended vocabularies related to hypertension were selected for helping laypersons understand hypertension information. Conclusions: The consumer-oriented vocabularies may be helpful to overcome the vocabulary problem between non-professionals and professionals.
Objective: The purpose of this study is to identify the longitudinal reciprocal relationship between young children's vocabulary ability and physical aggression in young children. Methods: Two waves of panel data(2013/2015) from the Panel Study of Korean Children were analyzed in this study by using an adapted version of Autoregressive cross-lagged modeling. A total of 306 five-year-old and seven-year-old preschoolers, and their mothers participated in the study. Autoregressive cross-lagged modeling for multiple groups was conducted by using AMOS 24.0. Results: First, vocabulary ability and physical aggression showed stability over time. Second, young children's vocabulary ability(t) had a statistically significant effect on physical aggression(t+1). Conclusion/Implications: This study confirmed the interrelationships of young children's vocabulary ability and physical aggression by examining longitudinal data using the longitudinal analysis method. This study highlights the importance of developing interventions to support language development with aggressive children. The results of the present study can be used as a source in developing policies for aggressive children and their parents.
