Mirrors often appear in fashion advertisements. This study aimed to analyze meanings of the images represented in fashion advertisements using mirrors. This study analyzed the meanings of mirror image in Western art history, and also studied meanings of female representations in the paintings. Based on previous studies, this study classified mirrors' expressions in three types and analyzed their meanings. To analyze the meanings of the three types, this study researched the symbolic meanings of the mirrors in visual arts chronologically, first. And then, this study interpreted that in the context of consumption cultures and consuming ideologies in view of feminism, consumption ideology, desire theory, and fetishism. The results of this study were as follows; 1. Narcistic body expressions associated with strong and independent women, while associated submissive being overwhelmed by consumption cultures. 2. The method of revealing the female body throughout mirrors was meant to attract the attention of consumer. 3. Multiplied body images meaning was like a commodity in fashion advertisements.
In recent years when the importance of public communication is more emphasized, it has to be noticed that we are now living in the public-initiated age of rhetoric resulted from rapid development of broadcast media. Therefore, the purpose of this treatise is to examine the structural characteristics in the fusion design in order to anaylize the rhetorical expressions as symbols of communication. One of those is intertextuality that expresses metaphorically by bleding and borrowing codes and another is hypertextual space where various texts twines around each other making brand-new and diverse organizations, as the combined allegory with a number of hidden expression. The fusion design may be understood as the Intention to attract gaze to visual messages and as the rhetorical expressions based on compounding aesthetic codes by producing new cultural meanings. If fusion, a phenomenon which represents the 21st century, not a passing fad of cultural mixture, is ready to take the initiative, the design has to be groped for that creates a synergy effect.
The purpose of this study is to consider the works of Nick Knight, the most influential fashion visual maker, to find out the characteristics of his works. For the research method, literature reviews were done by studying his book, viewing the articles on his official web site, reading journal review of his works and his interview articles. For the work analysis, fashion brands 'Christian Dior', 'Alexander McQueen', 'Martin Margiela', 'Hussein Chalayan' and 'Gareth Pugh' that have worked with Nick Knight were selected. The characteristics of his fashion works were derived from overall analysis of fashion visual works. The characteristics of Nick Knight's works are as follows. First is the 'innovation of image expression'. He used digital infra in advance and introduced digital images at the initial stage. He used fashion films as the means of communication and tried new image expressions in 3D. Second is 'breaking down the boundaries of creating process'. He worked with various field experts to make high quality works. He invited the public to participate in his creative process through the internet. Third is 'breaking down the categories of aesthetic expression'. He provided a wide variety of aesthetic standard and refused aesthetic stereotype. He broke the boundaries between fashion and art with a unique technique and high values.
Effects of dark adaptation have large safety implications. This study was aimed to investigate the effects of varying illuminance and the size of critical detail on visual performance (i.e., time-to-detect) in a dark room environment. While adapting to the dark environment, ten subjects were asked to detect and answer simple numerical expressions under 9 experimental conditions (3 illuminance level $\times$ 3 target size). The ANOVA results revealed that the time-to-detect was significantly affected by both of the illumination level and the size of critical detail. As illumination increased from 10 lux to 20 lux, the time-to-detect was significantly declined. For the size of critical detail, 0.5/min size (i.e., equal to 2 minutes of visual angle) resulted in a shorter time-to-detect, as compared to 0.7/min size (i.e., equal to 1.6 minutes of visual angle). Potential applications of this research include the development of design guidelines for illumination and warning signs in poorly illuminated viewing environments.

Infants communicate their feelings and needs to the outside world through non-verbal methods such as crying and displaying diverse facial expressions. However, inexperienced parents tend to decode these non-verbal messages incorrectly and take inappropriate actions, which might affect the bonding they build with their babies and the cognitive development of the newborns. In this paper, we propose an aural-visual two-stream based infant cry recognition system to help parents comprehend the feelings and needs of crying babies. The proposed system first extracts the features from the pre-processed audio and video data by using the VGGish model and 3D-CNN model respectively, fuses the extracted features using a fully connected layer, and finally applies a SoftMax function to classify the fused features and recognize the corresponding type of cry. The experimental results show that the proposed system classification exceeds 0.92 in F1-score, which is 0.08 and 0.10 higher than the single-stream aural model and single-stream visual model.

Expressing complex query conditions in a concise and intuitive way has been a challenge in the design of visual object-oriented query languages. We propose a visual query language called VOQL (Visual Object oriented Query Language) for object oriented databases. By employing the visual notation of graph and Venn diagram, the database schema and the advanced features of object oriented queries such as multi-valued path expressions and quantifiers can be represented in a simple way. VOQL has such good features as simple and intuitive syntax, well-defined semantics, and excellent expressive power of object-oriented queries compared with previous visual object-oriented query languages.
Visual representations play an important role for students to understand the meaning of a given problem, devise problem-solving approaches, and implement them successfully. The purpose of this study was to investigate how 6th graders would use visual representations in solving mathematical problems and in what ways such use might affect successful problem solving. The results showed that many students preferred numerical expressions to visual representations. However, students who used visual representations, specifically schematic representations, performed better than those who employed numerical representations. Given this, this paper includes instructional implications to nurture students' use of visual representations in a way to increase their problem solving ability.
The purpose of this study is to provide a method to help elementary school students learn ratio-related concepts effectively through visual representations. This study was conducted to identify the differences in the composition of ratio-related concepts between Korean and Singaporean textbooks, reconstruct a unit of proportional expressions and distributions by using visual representations and confirm the differences in performance between an experimental and a comparison group of 6th grade students. While the experimental group mathematics lessons is from the reconstructed textbook, the comparison group lessons is from an existing textbook that does not include any reconstructive representations. A t-test of mean was applied to determine the differences between the experimental and comparison group. Analysis revealed significant differences in the mean between the experimental group and the comparison group, and the intermediate level group showed more improvement compared to the higher and lower level groups. An implication of this study is that the application of visual representations can assist students' understanding of ratio-related concepts.
The purpose of this study has placed its meaning in the use as the basic material for the research of the person's facial expressions, by researching and analyzing the visual reactions of recognition of children according to the facial expressions of emotion and by surveying the verbal reactions of boys and girls according to the individual expressions of emotion. The subjects of this study were 108 children at the age of 6 - 8 (55 males, 53 females) who were able to understand the presented research tool, and the response survey conducted twice were used in the method of data collection by individual interviews and self administered questionnaires. The research tool using in the questionnaires were classified into 6 types of joy, sadness, anger, surprise, disgust, and fear which could derive the specific and accurate responses. Regarding children's visual reactions of recognition, both of boys and girls showed the high frequency in the facial expressions of joy, sadness, anger, surprise, and the low frequency in fear, disgust. Regarding verbal reactions, it showed the high frequency in the heuristic responses either to explore or the responds to the impressive parts reminiscent to the facial appearances in all the joy, sadness, anger, surprise, disgust, fear. And it came out that the imaginary responses created new stories reminiscent to the facial expression in surprise, disgust, and fear.

In this paper, we present a method that can recognize face images by use of a sparse population code that is a learning model about a receptive fields of the simple cells in the primary visual cortex. Twenty front-view facial images form twenty persons were used for the training process, and 200 varied facial images, 20 per person, were used for test. The correct recognition rate was 100% for only the front-view test facial images, which include the images either with spectacles or of various expressions, while it was 90% in average for the total input images that include rotated faces. We analyzed the effect of nonlinear functon that determine the sparseness, and compared recognition rate using the sparese population code with that using eigenvectors (eigenfaces), which is compact code that makes contrast with the sparse population code.
