The Advantages of M-Learning Using The Combination of Digital Content and Mobile Device In Education Field

  • In general, there are 3 subjects of discussion in education field; namely past, present and future. Related with those facts, there is several information or knowledge that relatively hard to be presented in the real world. In this matter, digital content shows its contribution especially in the education field. Digital content can virtually represent the information or knowledge that seems to be difficult to be visualized in the real world before. In this project, researcher develops a mobile device's application that consist the skeleton's 3D virtual content. This application is expected to solve the above explained problem that usually appears during learning human skeleton in senior high-school's biology class. Besides, the application of digital content will make the learning process become easier because the student will have a visual learning tool. Last, the mobile device that is used in this prototype has offer an important beneficial namely mobility beneficial, so that the user can access the content anytime and anywhere.

Factor Analysis of Visual Literacy Influencing Diagram Understanding and Drawing in Computer Science Education

  • Recently, with the advent of the software-based society, many organizations have been providing software developing education, such as coding, to Computer Science majors and non-Computer Science majors. When implementing a program, teachers can let students draw a variety of diagrams, such as flowcharts, UML diagrams, and ERD diagrams ahead. As the importance of computational thinking is increasingly emphasized, abstracting algorithms into diagrams is considered an important educational element. In this paper, we examined the visual literacy and abstract/concrete way of thinking of novice programmers in order to analyze factors affecting the abstraction process of drawing diagrams, and how they influence students' ability to understand diagrams and ability to draw. If we understand what factors influence the abstraction process in this study, we can suggest educational alternatives for future strategies in which teachers will teach students.

  • People with visual impairments are difficult to go to education facility by themselves, because of their limited visual ability, orientation, and usability field, so they prefer dormitories. Those dormitories playa role in living space, education, communication and culture function. Therefore those facilities planned more user centered design, since they are influenced by user actability and their values. User centered designs that match between the user and space are understood as well as their characteristics and behavior. Especially for understanding their activity, observation is conducted about their behavior in dormitories. Thus the purpose of this study is suggested to be a basic source that planning about residential facility for people with visual impairments through interview and observation investigation by analysis that they resident in space motion and performance.

Exploring Visualization Process of Expert Teachers: a Case of the Simple Visual Task

  • This paper focuses on finding out visualization process by means of VTA(Visual Task Analysis) of expert teachers' simple task. Findings indicate teachers have coding schema of performing visual task as such; (a) the analyzing by reading and some activities in the task text, (b) conceptualizing or understanding in his/her own way, (c) the explaining of the action or product, (d) the searching by thinking or finding, (e) the decision of visualizing of the task. Expert teachers tried to visualize in the form of abstract graph, and to omit the object which was not directly related to the topic at the pilot study. VAT based on ground theory and protocol analysis was developed and performed. This case study suggests that an additional study for searching a guide and method might be beneficial for conducting a visual task analysis.

초등 과학 교과서 시각 이미지의 사회-기호학적 분석: '날씨'와 '일기예보'를 중심으로 (The Socio-semiotic Analysis of Visual Images in Elementary Science Textbooks: Focused on Weather and Forecast)

  • 이 연구는 교수요목기부터 7차 교육과정에 이르기까지 '날씨'와 '일기예보'를 다루고 있는 시각적 이미지를 사회-기호학적 관점으로 분석하였다. 연구결과 대부분의 시각적 이미지는 실제 세상의 현상을 묘사하는 '실체형'인 것으로 나타났다. 이는 모든 시기의 초등 과학 교과서의 시각적 이미지는 대부분 학생들에게 친숙하였음을 의미한다. 시각적 이미지와 학생 사이의 의사소통에 대한 주도권 양상은 복잡하게 나타났다. 또한 초등학교 과학 교과서의 시각적 이미지들은 시기에 관계없이 대부분 기하학적 코드나 숫자 문자 등을 사용하지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 이 연구는 시각적 이미지의 정보의 양과 형태, 구조 및 사회적 의미 등을 해석하는 새로운 분석도구를 제안해준다. 또한 차기 과학교과서의 이미지 선택에 사회-기호학적 관점을 도입하는 하나의 전기가 될 것이다.

조명의 변화가 심한 환경에서 자동차 부품 유무 비전검사 방법 (Auto Parts Visual Inspection in Severe Changes in the Lighting Environment)

  • This paper presents an improved learning-based visual inspection method for auto parts inspection in severe lighting changes. Automobile sunroof frames are produced automatically by robots in most production lines. In the sunroof frame manufacturing process, there is a quality problem with some parts such as volts are missed. Instead of manual sampling inspection using some mechanical jig instruments, a learning-based machine vision system was proposed in the previous research[1]. But, in applying the actual sunroof frame production process, the inspection accuracy of the proposed vision system is much lowered because of severe illumination changes. In order to overcome this capricious environment, some selective feature vectors and cascade classifiers are used for each auto parts. And we are able to improve the inspection accuracy through the re-learning concept for the misclassified data. The effectiveness of the proposed visual inspection method is verified through sufficient experiments in a real sunroof production line.

Teaching the Derivation of Area Formulas for Polygonal Regions through Dissection-Motion-Operations (DMO): A Visual Reasoning Approach

  • Utilizing a structure of operations known as Dissection-Motion-Operations (DMO), a set of mathematics propositions or area-formulas in school mathematics will be introduced through shape-to-shape transforms. The underlying theme for DMO is problem-solving through visual reasoning and proving manipulatively or electronically vs. rote learning and memorization. Visual reasoning is the focus here where two operations that constitute DMO are utilized. One operation is known as Dissection (or Decomposition) operation that operates on a given region in 2D or 3D and dissects it into a number of subregions. The second operation is known as Motion (or Composition) operation applied on the resultant sub-regions to form a distinct area (or volume)-equivalent region. In 2D for example, DMO can transform a given polygon into a variety of new and distinct polygons each of which is area-equivalent to the original polygon (cf [Rahim, M. H. & Sawada, D. (1986). Revitalizing school geometry through Dissection-Motion Operations. Sch. Sci. Math. 86(3), 235-246] and [Rahim, M. H. & Sawada, D. (1990). 시각적 모델에 따른 곱셈식 표현 방법에 대한 연구 (A Study on Multiplication Expression Method by Visual Model)

  • 본 연구는 시각적 모델에 따른 학생들의 곱셈식 표현 방법을 지필 검사 및 시선추적 검사를 통해 분석하였다. 지필검사 결과 학생들은 곱셈식으로 제시하는데 있어 묶음 모델에서는 (묶음 내 낱개의 수)${\times}$(묶음의 수), 배열모델에서는 (가로)${\times}$(세로)로 답하는 비율이 높았으나, 배열모델에서는 모양에 따라 (세로)${\times}$(가로)로 답하는 비율이 높은 경우도 있었다. 이러한 결과를 통해 곱셈 지도 시 적절한 모델 제시 방법과 시각적 모델에 대한 곱셈식 표현 방법에 대한 논점을 도출하였다.

Anti-Predator Responses of Black-Tailed Gull (Larus crassirostris) Flocks to Alarm Calls during the Post-Breeding Season

  • Black-tailed gulls (Larus crassirostris) produce alarm calls apparently related to their anti-predator behaviors, but the hypothesis that the calls are actually used as functionally referential alarm signals has not yet been tested. In this study, we performed a series of experiments using visual (a stuffed goshawk: Accipiter gentilis) and acoustic (alarm calls and a control vocalization) stimuli at 15 sites in Sinjindo-ri and Dowhang-ri, Taean-gun, Chungnam province to examine anti-predator responses of the gulls to alarm calls in playback trials. We found that the gulls' visual recognition of a perched hawk model in the absence of alarm vocalizations was weak or absent because the model was noticed in only two out of 16 trials. The gulls' responses to playbacks of the alarm call only and the alarm call with a visual stimulus differed from responses to the control vocalization in latency to approach, time mobbing, and the percentage of gulls responding, while the responses to alarm call only differed from alarm call with a visual stimulus in latency to first fly, latency to call, and time mobbing. The results of this study suggest that alarm calls of black-tailed gulls are used to elicit appropriate anti-predator behaviors that are intensified when a predator is detected visually.

그림자 현상에 대한 초등학생의 시각적 표상 능력 (Analysis of Elementary School Students' Visual Representation Competence for Shadow Phenomenon)

  • 본 연구와 관련된 선행 연구에서는 과학 교수 학습 과정에서 효과적인 시각적 표상 활용과 연구를 촉진하기 위한 목적으로 2개 차원으로 구성된 시각적 표상 능력의 교육목표 분류체계(visual representation competence taxonomy: VRC-T)가 개발되었다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 VRC-T에 기초하여 그림자 현상에 대한 초등학생의 시각적 표상 능력을 조사하고 그림자에 대한 과학 지식과 표상 능력 사이의 관계 및 VRC-T 인지 과정의 위계 관계를 탐색하고자 하였다. 연구 결과 그림자 현상에 대한 초등학생의 시각적 표상 능력을 '해석하기', '통합하기', '구성하기'의 대범주로 나누어 보면 대체적으로 '해석하기'가 가장 점수가 높고, 다음이 '구성하기', '통합하기'의 순으로 나타났다. 또 학생들이 정규 교육과정에서 그림자 관련 단원을 학습한 이후임에도 불구하고 시각적 표상 능력은 높지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 한편 텍스트 기반의 과학 지식은 시각적 표상 능력의 모든 범주와 상관이 높지 않았다. 이것은 텍스트 형식의 과학 지식을 가지고 있더라도 시각적 표상 능력은 갖추어져 있지 않을 가능성이 크다는 것과 과학 수업에서 시각적 표상을 좀 더 강조하여 다루어야 할 필요성을 나타낸다. 마지막으로 서열화 이론에 따라 그림자 현상에 대한 시각적 표상 능력의 인지 과정 위계 관계를 탐색한 결과, 인정비율을 다소 느슨하게 하는 경우 6개 인지 과정 사이에 일직선의 위계 관계가 발견되었다. 이것은 평가 도구나 과제, 시각적 표상 능력을 지도하는 수업 활동을 계획할 때 VRC-T가 유용하게 활용될 수 있는 분석틀임을 시사한다.
