A vorticity-velocity integro-differential formulation of incompressible Wavier-Stokes equations is described, focusing on a scheme for calculating pressure fields in application of the Lagrangian vortex method in connection with panel methods. It deals with the dynamic coupling among velocity, vorticity and pressure, and the Helmholtz decomposition of the velocity field, through a comparative study with the Eulerian finite volume method, we provide an extensive understanding of the Lagrangian vortex methods for numerical simulations of viscous flows around arbitrary bodies.
The velocity and pressure fields of a ship's propulsion mechanism of the Weis-Fogh type, in which a airfoil moves reciprocally in a channel, are studied in this paper using the advanced vortex method. The airfoil and the channel are approximated by a finite number of source and vortex panels, and the free vortices are introduced from the body surfaces. The viscous diffusion of fluid is represented using the core-spreading model to the discrete vortices. The velocity is calculated on the basis of the generalized Biot-Savart law and the pressure field is calculated from integrating the equation given by the instantaneous velocity and vorticity fields. Two-dimensional unsteady viscose flows of this propulsion mechanism are numerically clarified, and the calculated results agree well with the experimental ones.
A study of three-dimensional unsteady incompressible flow past elliptic disk with aspect ratio 3 is presented. Numerical visualization using the vortex filament method was performed at Reynolds number of 20,000 on the basis of the minor diameter, the random walk method was used to calculate viscous diffusion effect. We suggest 3 stages about the wake development according to its structures, stability and motions and described the characteristics of each stages. The structure of the elliptic wake is more complicate and unstable than the wake behind a circular disk.

A two-dimensional direct numerical simulation is performed to investigate the dynamic behaviors of a single vortex in counter reacting and non-reacting flow field. A predictor-corrector-type numerical scheme with a low Mach number approximation is used in this simulation. A 16-step augmented reduced mechanism is adopted to treat the chemical reaction. The budget of the vorticity transport equation is examined to reveal a mechanism leading to the formation, destruction and transport of a single vortex according to the direction of vortex generation in reacting and non-reacting flows. The results show that air-side vortex has more larger strength than that of fuel-side vortex in both non-reacting and reacting flows. In reacting flow, the vortex is more dissipated than that in non-reacting flow as the vortex approach the flame. The total circulation in reacting flow, however, is larger than that in non-reacting flow because the convection transport of vorticity becomes much large by the increased velocity near the flame region. It is also found that the stretching and the convection terms mainly generate vorticity in non-reacting and reacting flows. The baroclinic torque term generates vorticity, while the viscous and the volumetric expansion terms attenuate vorticity in reacting flow. Furthermore, the contribution of volumetric expansion term on total circulation for air-side vortex is much larger than that of fuel-side vortex. It is also estimated that the difference of total circulation near stagnation plane according to the direction of vortex generation mainly attributes to the convection term.
A numerical investigation has been made for flows in an axisymmetric circular cylinder with an impulsively rotating cone located at the bottom of the container. The axisymmetric container is completely filled with a viscous fluid. Major parameter for the present research is only the vertex angle of the cone, otherwise Reynolds number and aspect ratio of the vessel are fixed. Main interest concerns on the vortex breakdown of meridional circulation by impulsive rotation of the cone with respect to the longitudinal axis of the cylinder. Numerical method has been used to integrate momentum and continuity equations on a generalized body-fitted grid system. The pattern of vortex breakdown is quite different from that in a right circular cylinder with flat endwall disks. The flow visualization photograph of the preceeding work by Escudier is compared with the present numerical results and the two results are in good agreements. Also flow data are plotted to gain a deep understanding for the present phenomena of the vortex breakdown. The conclusions of this work are clearly explained by the classical theory of the vortex flows in a finite geometry.
The three-dimensional unsteady compressible Full Navier-Stokes equation solver with sliding multi-block method has been applied to analyze three dimensional characteristics of the viscous flow field and compression wave around the high speed train which is entering into a tunnel. The numerical scheme of AF + ADI was used to efficiently solve Navier-Stokes equations in the curvilinear coordinate system. The vortex formation owing to the viscous interaction around the train was found and the generation of compression wave due to the blockage effects was observed ahead of the train in the form of plane wave. The three dimensional characteristics of the flow field compared to the analytic results were discussed in detail. The variation of pressure of tunnel wall surface and velocity profile of the train are identified as the train enters into a tunnel. The changes in aerodynamic forces and streamlines of each specific sections are also discussed.
