  • It has been indicated that the rotor/stator interaction has distinct causes of unsteadiness, such as the viscous vortex shedding, wake/stator interaction and potential rotor/stator interaction. In this paper, the mechanism of unsteady potential interaction in one stage axial compressor is numerically investigated for blade row ratio 1:1 and 2:3 at design point and for blade row ratio 2:3 at off-design point in two-dimensional view point. The numerical technique used is the upwind scheme of Van-Leer's Flux Vector Splitting(FVS) and Cubic spline interpolation is applied on zonal interface. In this study the flow unsteadiness due to potential interaction are found to be larger in blade row ratio 2:3 than in 1:1. The total pressure rise in blade row ratio 2:3 is closer to the real value in design point than that in 1:1. The change of unsteady pressure amplitude according to the variation of stator exit pressure is very small.

  • Digging well foundation has been widely used in railway bridges due to its good economy and reliability. In other instances, bridges with digging well foundation still have damage risks during earthquakes. However, there is still a lack of knowledge of lateral behavior of digging well foundation considering the soil-foundation interaction. In this study, scaled models of bridge pier-digging well foundation system are constructed for quasi-static test to investigate their lateral behaviors. The failure mechanism and responses of the soil-foundation-pier interaction system are analyzed. The testing results indicate that the digging foundations tend to rotate as a rigid body under cyclic lateral load. Moreover, the depth-width ratio of digging well foundation has a significant influence on the failure mode of the interaction system, especially on the distribution of foundation displacement and the failure of pier. The energy dissipation capacity of the interaction system is discussed by using index of the equivalent viscous damping ratio. The damping varies with the depth-width ratio changing. The equivalent stiffness of soil-digging well foundation-pier interaction system decreases with the increase of loading displacement in a nonlinear manner. The absolute values of the interaction system stiffness are significantly influenced by the depth-width ratio of the foundation.

  • In vertical seismic isolation (VSI), a building is partitioned intentionally by vertical layers into two dynamically different substructures for seismic response reduction. Initially, a 1-story frame was partitioned into two substructures, interconnected by viscous and visco-elastic links, and seismic responses of the original and the vertically isolated structures (VIS) were obtained, considering a large number of stiffness and mass ratios of substructures with respect to the original structure. Color contour graphs were defined for presentation and investigation of large amounts of output results. Dynamic characteristics of the isolated structures were studied by considering the non-classical damping of the system, and then the effects of viscous and visco-elastic link parameters on the modal damping ratios were discussed. On this basis, three states of mass isolation, interactional state, and control mass were differentiated. Response history analyses were performed by Runge-Kutta numerical method. In these analyses, interaction of isolation ratios and link parameters, on response control of VIS was studied and the appropriate ranges for link parameters as well as the optimal ranges for isolation ratios were suggested. Results show that by using the VSI technique, seismic response reduction up to 50% in flexible substructure and even more in stiff substructure is achievable.

  • Velocity field behind a container ship model with a rotating propeller has been investigated using PIV (particle image velocimetry) system. Four hundred instantaneous velocity fields were measured at 4 different blade phases and ensemble-averaged to investigate the spatial evolution of vortical structure of near wake within one propeller diameter downstream. The phase-averaged mean velocity fields show the potential wake and the viscous wake formed due to the boundary layers developed on the blade surfaces. The interaction between bilge vortex developed along the hull surface and the tangential velocity component of incoming flow causes to have asymmetric flow structure in the transverse plane.

  • The viscous interaction of stern wave is studied by simulating the free-surface flows, including sub-breaking phenomena around a high speed catamaran hull advancing on calm water. The Navier-Stokes equation is solved by a finite difference method where the body-fitted coordinate system, the wall function and the triple-grid system are invoked. The numerical appearance of the sub-breaking waves is qualitatively supported by the experimental observation They are also applied to study precisely on the stern flow of S-103 as to which extensive experimental data are available. For the catamaran, computations are carried out for the mono ana twin hulls.

  • The effects of the viscosity of an adjacent viscous fluid on the characteristics of the elastic waves have been studied theoretically and experimentally. Expressions for the wave speed and attenuation of the elastic waves of transverse motion, such as the torsional wave propagating in a circular cylinder and the Love wave in a layered half-space solid, have been obtained as functions of the viscosity and mass density of the fluid by exact and asymptotic analyses. The theoretical results have been compared with experimental observations, and it has been demonstrated that a device described herein can be used as a sensor for measuring the viscosity of a fluid with a known mass density.

  • A finite element scheme using the concept of PISO method has been developed to solve the Navier-Stokes viscous flows in all speed range. This scheme includes development of new pressure equation that retains both the hyperbolic term related with the density variation and the elliptic term reflecting the incompressibility constraint. The present method is applied to the incompressible two-dimensional driven cavity flow problems(Re=100, 400 and 1,000). For compressible flows, the Carter plate problem(M=3 and Re=1,000) is computed. Finally, we have simulated the shock-boundary layer interaction(M=2 and Re=2.96×10/sup 5/), a more difficult problem, and compared its results with the experiment to demonstrate the shock capturing capability of the present solution algorithm.

  • A two-dimensional direct numerical simulation is performed to investigate the formation characteristics of a single vortex interacting with $CH_4/N_2$-Air counterflow nonpremixed flame. The numerical method was based on a predictor-corrector scheme for a low Mach number flow. The detailed transport properties and a 16-step augmented reduced mechanism are adopted in this calculation. The budgets of the vorticity transport equation arc examined to reveal the mechanisms leading to the formation, evolution and dissipation of a single vortex interacting with counterflow nonpremixed flame. It is found that the stretching term, which depends on the azimuthal component of vorticity, and radial velocity, mainly generates vortieitv in non-reacting and reacting flows. The viscous and baroclinic torque term destroy the vorticity in non-reacting flow. In addition, the baroclinic torque term due to density and pressure gradient generates vorticity, while viscous and the volumetric expansion terms due to density gradient destroy vorticity in reacting flow.
