A nonlinear creep function incorporated into the elastic visco-plastic model may describe the long-term soil deformation more accurately. However, by applying the conventional procedure, there are challenges to determine the model parameters due to limitation of suitable data points. This paper presents a numerical solution to obtain several parameters simultaneously for a nonlinear elastic visco-plastic (EVP) model using the available consolidation data. The finite difference scheme using the Crank-Nicolson procedure is applied to solve a set of coupled partial differential equations of the time dependent strain and pore water pressure dissipation. The model parameters are determined by applying the algorithm of trust-region reflective optimisation in conjunction with the finite difference solution. The proposed method utilises all available consolidation data during dissipation of the excess pore water pressure to determine the required model parameters. Moreover, the reference time in the elastic visco-plastic model can readily be adopted as a unit of time; denoting creep is included in the numerical predictions explicitly from the very first time steps. In this paper, the settlement predictions of thick soft clay layers are presented and discussed to evaluate and compare the accuracy and reliability of the proposed method against the graphical procedure to obtain the model parameters. In addition, comparison of the available experimental results to the numerical predictions confirms the accuracy of the numerical procedure.

Creep behaviors of the solder balls in a flip chip package assembly during thermal cycling test is investigated.. A material models used in the finite element analysis are viscoplastic model introduced by Anand and creep model called partitioned model. Experiment of two temperature cycles using moir$\acute{e}$ interferometry is conducted to verify the reliability of material models for the analysis of thermo-mechanical behavior. Bending deformations of the assemblies and average strains of the solder balls due to temperature change and dwell time are investigated. The results show that time-dependent shear strain of solder by the partitioned model is in excellent agreement with those by moir$\acute{e}$ interferometry, while there is considerable difference between results by Anand model and experiment. In this paper, the partitioned model is employed for the time-dependent creep analysis of the FC-PBGA package. It is also shown that the thermo-mechanical stress becomes relaxed by creep behavior at high temperature during temperature cycles.
In this paper damage propagation of a material during forming is investigated with the concept of continuum damage mechanics. An isotropic damage model based on the theory of materials of type N is adopted to describe the damage process of a ductile material with large elasto-viscoplastic deformation. The stiffness degradation of the loaded material is chosen as a damage measure. The highly nonlinear equilibrium equations are reduced to the incremental weak form and approximated by the total Lagrangian finite element method. To simulate contact condition, extended interior penalty method with modified coulomb friction law is adopted. The displacement control method along with the modified Riks' continuation technique is used to solve the incremental iterative equations. As numerical examples, upsetting problem and backward extrusion problem are simulated and the results of damage propagation and $J_2$ stress contours with and without friction are presented.

The optimal extrusion process for the rate sensitive materials have been developed in this study. The preliminary designs of the die shapes have been carried out to maintain constant strain rate during extrusion and the upper bound approach has been applied to define the process variables (the die entrance velocity and the die length) including the rheology during deformation. The result for the axisymmetric extrusion process has been verified with rigid-viscoplastic finite element analysis. It has been confirmed that the optimal die has wider band of constant strain rate than the conical one does.

In this second part of the paper, the automatic mesh generation and remeshing algorithm using bubble packing method is applied to the nonlinear problem. The remeshing/refinement procedure is necessary in the large deformation process especially because the mesh distortion deteriorates the convergence and accuracy. To perform the nonliear analysis, the transfer of state variables such as displacement and strain is added to the algorithm of Part 1. The equilibrium equation based on total Lagrangian formulation and elasto-viscoplastic model is used. For the numerical experiment, the upsetting process including the contact constraint condition is analyzed by two refinement criteria. And from the result, it is addressed that the present algorithm can generate the refined meshes easily at the largely deformed area with high error.
In this study, an optimal design technique was investigated for determining appropriate dimensions of components of the die set used in the extrusion process. For this, an axi-symmetric elastic finite element program for the analysis of deformation of the shrink fitted die set was developed with the Lagrange multiplier method to implement the constraint condition of shrink fit of stress ring. By coupling the rigid-viscoplastic analysis of extrusion process by CAMPform and elastic analysis of the die set, the optimization study was made by employing optimization program DOT. Considering the various assembly conditions, optimal design was determined for a single stress ring case. It is construed that the proposed design method can be beneficial for improving the tool life of cold extrusion die set at practice.

Rapid progress in many branches of technology has led to a demand on new materials such as high strength light weight alloys, powdered alloys and composite materials. The hydrostatic extrusion is essentially a method of extruding a clad rod through a die. In order to investigate the effect of the process conditions such as friction heat, deformation and clad thickness on the clad extrusion process, viscoplastic finite element simulations were conducted. A specific model for theoretical analysis used in this study is The single scalar variable version of Hart's model. An experiment also has been carried out using 1.5MN hydrostatic extruder with variable speed ram, LVDT and load cell for comparison. It is found that the hydrostatic extrusion pressure considering the effect of heat dissipation in this theoretical work was closer to the experimental pressure than the isothermal hydrostatic extrusion pressure.

The evaluation technique of seismic performance on agricultural infrastructure based on dynamic numerical simulations, which Included a cyclic elasto-plastic and a viscoelastic-viscoplastic constitutive model to actual multi-layered ground conditions during large earthquake were performed by a liquefaction analysis in the present study. From the liquefaction analysis, it was verified that the models can give a good description of the damping characteristics and liquefaction phenomena of ground accurately during large event which induces plastic deformation in large strain range.

Helical gears are machined from blanks, which are usually prepared by forging cylindrical billets at high temperatures through buster, blocker and finisher processes. As dimensions of the blank are closer to those of the machined part, machining cost can be more reduced. Therefore, there are a lot of efforts being made to optimize the forging processes in order to produce near-net shaped blanks. In the present investigation, a rigid viscoplastic finite element technique was used to analyze a helical gear blank hot forging processes and deformation, strain and temperature distributions, forging load variations during forging were obtained. In the paper, it is discussed how these results can be utilized to optimize die design, billet dimensions and press usage.

An Eulerian finite element method for the analysis of steady state rolling/extrusion of sintered powder metals is presented. Initial guess of the porosity distribution in an Eulerian mesh is obtained from the velocity and scaled pressure field computed by the Consistent Penalty finite element formulations-the standard one and the consistent penalty type one-are invoked for the analysis of strain hardening, dilatant viscoplastic deformation of porous metals. Comparisons of the predicted distributions of porosity to those by a Lagrangian finite element method and by experiments reported in the articles prove the effectiveness and validity of the proposed method.
