  • A mathematical analysis has been carried out for understanding the traversal attributes of torsional waves in a Voigt-type viscoelastic porous layer bounded with corrugated surfaces resting over a heterogeneous transversely isotropic gravitating semi-infinite medium. Both the media are assumed to be under the effect of initial stresses acting along horizontal directions. In the presumed geometry, continuous and periodic type of corrugation has been considered. The condensed form of dispersion relation has been obtained analytically with the aid of the Whittaker's function and suitable boundary conditions. The influence of viscoelasticity, porosity, initial stresses, heterogeneity, gravity, undulation and position parameters on the phase and damped velocities has been illustrated graphically. In addition, relative examination investigating the impact of corrugated and planar bounded surfaces on the dispersion and damping characteristics is one of the important highlights of this study.

  • As the various manufacturing technology of optical glass is developed, the aspherical lenses are applied to many fields. However, It is still very difficult to manufacture glass lens because of the high cost and the short life of core. In recent years, the demands of the aspherical glass lenses increase since it is difficult to obtain the desirable performance in the plastic lens. In the glass mold lens, it has merits of high productivity and reproductivity since lens is manufactured by the only forming with high precision mold. The fabricating conditions for glass mold lens are glass surface that does not cause fusion, viscosity of 108-1013 poise for the $0.2{\mu}m$ accuracy, and viscoelasticity for the roughness less than 100 angstrom. In this thesis, ultra-precision grinding characteristics of tungsten carbide for forming the aspherical glass lens core were studied and the result of it is applied to manufacture the tungsten carbide-base core of the glass lens used to the laser scanning unit and the camera phone.

  • In the wet master batch process, process oil is used to improve the workability of silica-SBR. The process oil expands the polymer and provides lubrication to soften the stiff rubber chain. However, addition of excess process oil can interfere in the crosslinking reaction between rubber molecules and reduce the crosslinking density of silica-SBR. Controlling the amount of process oil is an important aspect for properly controlling the workability and crosslinking density of silica-SBR. In this study, silica-SBR was prepared by adjusting the amount of process oil to confirm its effect on silicaSBR. Vulcanization characteristics of silica-SBR were examined using a moving die rheometer. Dynamic viscoelasticity was measured using a dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer, and the mechanical properties were investigated using the universal testing machine according to ASTM D412. As a result, all silica-SBR compounds with 10 to 40 phr of process oil have effects of improving the processability and the silica dispersibility. Also, the optimum condition was determined when 10 phr of processed oil was added because the abrasion resistance was improved 65% compared to that at 40 phr.

  • Synergistic interactions between xanthan (X) and carob (C) were investigated by studying the linear viscoelastic behavior of X, C, and X/C mixtures at sol and gel states. At the solution state, storage modulus (G') dominates the linear viscoelastic properties of X/C mixtures. The gelation temperature (52 to $57^{\circ}C$) was weakly dependent on the xanthan fraction (${\phi}x$) in the mixture. The ${\phi}x$ also had a strong effect on G' until ${\phi}x=0.5$. The elastic active network concentration (EANC) of X/C gels was estimated from the pseudo-equilibrium modulus. The EANC for systems with ${\phi}x=0.25$, 0.5, 0.75, and 1 at 1% total concentration was 2.3, 4.4, 4.1, and 0.32 (${\times}10^{-3}\;mol/m^3$), respectively. The maximum synergistic effect was observed at about ${\phi}x=0.5$. The G' at the transition state of X/C mixed gel was proportional to ${\omega}^{3/2}$ at ${\omega}$>${\omega}_{tr}$ (the onset transition frequency) compared to the theoretical limit of ${\omega}^{1/2}$.

  • An elastomeric bushing is a device used in automotive suspension systems to reduce the load transmitted from the wheel to the frame of the vehicle. The relation between the load applied to the shaft or sleeve and the relative displacement of elastomeric bushing is nonlinear and exhibits features of viscoelasticity. A load-displacement relation for elastomeric bushing is important fur dynamic numerical simulations. A boundary value problem fur the bushing response leads to the load-displacement relation, which requires complex calculations. Therefore, by modifying the constitutive equation for a nonlinear viscoelastic incompressible material developed by Lianis, the data for the elastomeric bushing material was obtained and this data was used to derive the new load-displacement relation for radial response of the bushing. After the load relaxation function for the bushing was obtained from the step displacement control test, Pipkin-Rogers model was developed. Solutions were allowed for comparison between the results of the modified Lianis model and those of the proposed model. It was shown that the proposed Pipkin-Rogers model was in very good agreement with the modified Lianis model.

  • In this paper, the elastic epoxy added elastomer having viscoelasticity to existing epoxy was measured thermal, structural properties through TGA(Thermogravimetric Analysis) and FESEM(Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope). Specimens were made of dumbbell forms by the ratio of 5[phr], 10[phr], 15[phr], and 20[phr] by regulation with elastomer contents. The measurement temperature dimensions of TGA were $0[^{\circ}C]\;to\;800[^{\circ}C]$, and rising temperature was $5[^{\circ}C/min]$. And we observed structure through FESEM at the magnification of 1000times with the voltage of 15[kV] after breaking by quenching specimens. As thermal analysis results, we could know that thermal and structural properties was improved quantity according to decrease of elastomer contents. In general, thermal, structural properties of 15[phr] was excellent among the specimens.

  • Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) has been found to be effective treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD). This study aims to evaluate the effect of DBS for rigidity during DBS surgery. Six Parkinsonian patients who received STN-DBS surgery participated in this study. The examiner imposed flexion and extension of a patient's wrist randomly. Resistance to passive movement was quantified by viscoelastic properties (two damping constants for each of flexion and extension phase and one spring constant throughout both phases). All Viscoelastic constants decreased by DBS (p<0.01). Specifically, reduction in damping constant during flexion ($B_f$) was greater than those of damping constant during extension ($B_e$) and of spring constant (p<0.05). $B_f$ would be appropriate for evaluation of effect of DBS for rigidity during DBS surgery.

  • In this paper, a finite viscoelastic continuum model for rubber and its finite element analysis are presented. This finite viscoelatic model based on continuum mechanics is an extended model of Johnson and Wuigley's 1-D model. In this extended model, continuum based kinematic measures are rigorously defied and by using this kinematic measures, elastic stage law and flow rule are introduced. In kinematics, three configuration are introduced. In kinematics, three configuration are introduced. They are reference, current and virtual visco configurations. In elastic state law, it is assumed that at a certain time, there exists an elastic potential which describes the recoverable elastic energy. From this elastic potential, elastic state law is derived. The proposed flow rule is based on phenomenological observation. The flow rule gives precise relaxation response. In finite element approximation, mixed Lagrangian description is used, where total and similar method of updated Lagrangian descriptions are used together. This approach reduces the numerical job and gives simple nonlinear syatem of equations. To satisfy the incompressible condition, penalty-type modified Mooney-Rivlin energy function is adopted. By this method nearly incompressible condition is obtain the virtual visco configuration. For verification, uniaxial stretch tests are simulated for various stretch rates. The simulated results show good agreement with experiments. As a practical experiments. As a preactical example, pressurized rubber plate is simulated. The result shows finite viscoelastic effects clearly.

  • Cells regulate their shapes and motility by sensing the cues from the internal and external microenvironment. Under different circumstances, microglia, the brain resident immune cells, undergo dynamic phenotypic changes, one of which is a remarkable periodic oscillatory migration in vitro. However, very little is known about the kinematic and dynamic perspectives of this oscillatory behavior. In this study, we tracked the changes in cell morphology and nuclear displacement, and visualized the forces using traction force microscopy (TFM). By correlation analyses, we confirmed that the lamellipodia formation preceded the nuclear translocation. Moreover, traction, developed following lamellipodia formation, was found to be localized and fluctuated at two ends of the oscillating cells. Taken together, our results imply that oscillatory microglial cells feature a viscoelastic migration, which will contribute to the field of cell mechanics.
