In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in tangible sports simulators with the success of golf simulator. The main purpose of this study is to develop a tangible snowboard simulator for the beginner using virtual reality technology. This paper proposes an interactive virtual coach and high fidelity virtual environment for snowboard training. The virtual coach offers an intuitive guidance and personalized coaching feedback about the 5 fundamental riding skills. The virtual training environment uses the stereoscopic display system and motion platform to create more realistic training situation. We expect virtual reality will be used as a training aids in many sports such as taekwondo, baseball, archery and so on.
Computer game addiction generally signifies excessive or unhealthy inclination for computer games. Game addicts spend great amount of their time engrossed in playing games while neglecting the real world. They have the tendency to neglect important responsibilities and isolate themselves from others. Instead, they place greater importance on their status, performance, and achievement in games. Virtual stores, virtual libraries, virtual cinema, virtual trade shows, virtual schools, virtual characters have been emerging due to the popularity of the internet. An ambiguous term virtual reality has appeared in addition to the word virtual. There also appeared alien and UFO syndrome. Such social phenomenon has brought about confusion of reality and virtual world in which things that do not exist are mistakenly believed to exist. This study focuses on virtual reality games and provides an assessment of the causes and the side effects of game addiction and proposes countermeasures.
Alternate reality games (ARGs) are a game genre with characteristics that can lead to changes in current integrated media environments. While technical combinations are being pursued as diverse media are utilized based on formative aspects, the representative, narrative combination of the real and the virtual is a convergent factor in narrative structures. Through perspectives that perceive transmedia storytelling-which has brought convergence to communication among gamers-as having a structure and utility that can outclass previous game forms, this study focuses on ARGs, which have features that converge reality and virtual reality. Further, the study reveals the structure and utility of that system. This study sheds light convergent storytelling, which is in demand in the transmedia age, and which will serve as a significant investigation with regard to social perceptions of future games and changes in game form.
This essay analyzes space in augmented reality games, and attempts to offer space analytic standards of mobile augmented reality games in regards to space in existing games. This article proposes categorizing criteria based on the following factors: Analysis of space in existing games, Jason Jerald's Three Virtual Space Horizon Categories, interaction between virtual world and real world, and Lavroff's Three deciding factors of reality perception in virtual reality. It is meaningful that the analysis criteria of the Augmented Reality game space is presented through this analysis.
Digital simulation which was introduced to the architectural field due to the rapid growth of computer graphics, gave birth to a new type of contents called 'virtual reality', led by the interaction with the users and real time processing. The public attention is drawn to the virtual reality's potential as a next generational space simulation it, having the unique characteristics of 'simulation', 'interactivity', 'tole-presence', and 'immersion', is capable of taking a virtual tour of a space with a size equivalent to that of a real space, as well as proceeding with the design progress. Nonetheless, many problems impeding CPU's real time processing of an excessively loaded architectural model data have been pinpointed over the time. Yet such GPU based game engines as 'DirectX' and 'OpenGL', developed to deal with these impediments, have not been easily applied to the architectural simulation in the design process, due to the high license cost and the specific technical requirements for the system. The virtual reality has been developed and distributed centering around the gaming field, and game developers recently show a greater tendency to include level editors in the package for the expandability purpose. Thus, we plan to propose architecture simulation which utilizes level editors in this study. In addition, the compatibility of the game engine based level editors of Quake and Unreal which form the standards for the open source FPS games, based on VRML, the standard format for the virtual reality, was compared and analyzed. Taking the example of Villa Savoye of Le Corbusier, its application possibility as an architecture simulation was assessed, by measuring the extent to which the performance of such characteristic features of the virtual reality as interactivity, immersion, and tele-presence, was improved.
Currently the gamification as marketing technique has appeared in the field non-related with game, applied to game elements. The alternate reality game pulled down the boundary between the real and the virtual has come out. New trend game has shown beyond the range of the existing game. The possibility has import into online baseball simulation game. The objective of this research is the exploratory approach to build GOMS model through three subjects to the famous pro-baseball manager game. After game playing session, three subjects' utterance with game experience was recorded. We built the goal hierarchy of goal in GOMS to pro-baseball manager game to analyze the vocabulary in three subjects' utterance. We try to find the possibility of gamification in alternate reality game interacting between the real and the virtual, and demolishing them.
Virtual Reality(VR) is one of the most remarkable technologies in the current game industry. Nevertheless, it is difficult for the game industry to actively invest in the VR technology because of the technical problems to overcome and the uncertainty about the market possibility. Therefore, this study attempts to estimate the future possibilities of the VR game market in various angles. For the purpose, we explore the domestic game market from the past to the present, and forecast the game industry ecosystem using the Scenario Network Mapping. Based on the result, we propose a short and long term future prospect and suggest the possible strategies for each stakeholder of the VR game market.
This article combines literature and empirical research based on space perception theory and the case study of mixed reality game "The Fragment." It is concluded that the mixed reality scene under space perception has a three-level visual definition. This definition carries out a corresponding level analysis of the scenes of the "The Fragment" game and draws up the constituent factors of the mixed reality game scene characteristics. Finally, through questionnaire data investigation and analysis, it is verified that the three factors of virtual reality coexistence, human-computer interaction, and local serviceability can better explain the characteristics of mixed reality game scenes. At the end of the study, it is concluded that the definition of three levels of visual hierarchy and the constituent factors of mixed reality game scenes can provide reference and help for other mixed-reality game designs and a brief description of future research plans.
Purpose: In this study, we investigated the effectiveness of a 12-week virtual reality exercise program using the Nintendo Wii console (Wii) in improving balance, emotion, and quality of life among patients with cognitive decline. Methods: The study included 30 patients with cognitive decline (12 female, 18 male) who were randomly assigned to an experimental (n=15) and control groups (n=15). All subjects performed a traditional cognitive rehabilitation program and the experimental group performed additional three 40-minute virtual reality based video game (Wii) sessions per week for 12 weeks. The berg balance scale (BBS) was used to assess balance abilities. The short form geriatric depression scale-Korean (GDS-K) and the Korean version of quality of life-Alzheimer's disease (KQOL-AD) scale were both used to assess life quality in patients. Statistical significance was tested within and between groups before and after treatment, using Wilcoxon signed rank and Mann-Whitney u-tests. Results: After 36 training sessions, there were significant beneficial effects of the virtual reality game exercise on balance (BBS), GDS-K, and KQOL-AD in the experimental group when compared to the control group. No significant difference was observed within the control group. Conclusion: These findings demonstrate that a virtual reality-training program could improve the outcomes in terms of balance, depression, and quality of life in patients with cognitive decline. Long-term follow-ups and further studies of more efficient virtual reality training programs are needed.
In SNG, actual users enter virtual space with their real identity. They can enter the game space easily and rapidly from the real space and can get out of it easily. For such free crossing between the virtual and the real, every character, space image and game play has symbolic reality. While paying attention to the game play process of SNG such symbolic reality is constructed into the virtual world in the game, this study intends to identify that it follows an order of simulacre by Baudrillard. As the result of analysis, it shows that SNG promotes easy entering the game space while reflecting the reality to the most in the opening part of game play. And, gradually concealing reality, it reaches a pure simulacre step while covering up and distorting absence of the reality. If we compare it with the direct entering the pure similacre step in the existing Online games like MMORPG, we can know that such a game play process according to the similacre order may be the distinct game characteristic of SNG.
